What is the damage from? Are you going to back it? Good luck whatever the case and welcome!

Is the second picture to the right there the back with the rings showing? I count nine rings down...and the stave doesn't look to thick...are you sure you'll have enough wood once down to that last ring? Are you sure that's hornbeam too? Doesn't really look like it from here? ???

If you insist on making this one go? Id suggest rawhide and titebond III glue. That is more than a violation and in the hardest working portion of the limb.

well thank you for all your comments and informations. looks like what i working on this project going to be a trash. im considering to give up and start another one.

I think it wise to start another, if you have more.

Is that hornbeam, or hophornbeam? The two are similar and commonly confused. I don't know much about hornbeam. But I've worked a fair bit with hophornbeam, and its growth rings are normally quite small and its not productive to chase a ring in my opinion. The first ring under the bark is the ticket. If that is badly violated I don't bother with the stave.

+1 ...that's a nasty violation

i believe it's a hornbeam but could be beech thou

You could plane the back flat and glue on a piece of hickory.. Brian

Set it in the corner and start the next one ,may be some day come back to it !
Koan , you must really be good with a planer to be able to flatten the back on a stave like this !!

Nope... but hoping someone can figure it out ;)
