Title: "Squirrel thumper" a New Red Oak longbow
Post by: Ifrit617 on October 21, 2013, 07:29:37 pm
Hey guys finally got a chance to finish this red oak bow I tillered out in May. Probably put around 3000 shots through her since then, just never had time to apply the finish. This bow was an accomplishment for me since red oak is my arch-nemesis of all bow woods.

This one pulls a smooooth 41#@29" and is dead silent, with just a bit of a thump in the hand that lets you know the arrow's gone. As of now, with over 4000 shots through her, she holds a perfect 1.5" of resting set. It is one smooth target bow, but it earned its name from the squirrel I shot with it last friday. Finished out with some danish oil and deer tallow from JW. The limb wraps are suede saturated in more deer tallow. Turned out real nice.

Turned out 71" n2n, 1 1/16" wide at the widest point, straight tapering from there to 3/8" tips. I highly crowned the back of the bow to help take some stress off the belly. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Jon

4000 shots....

I guess a red oak bow can be durable after all  ::) ::) ::)

Nice job on this bow, that's a very graceful tiller.

That's is about as simple as it gets with perfect tiller. What more could you want...and from a $5 board. Great tribute to your bowyery and the lowly red oak board.  8)

Hard to beat the tiller on this one.  I really dig the simple bows.  Nice work.

Really nice bow! Red oak is such an underrated bow wood.

I agree if treated properly, but it sure is a bitch to work with if your design and tiller aren't flawless. Thanks!
