I wanted to dig into my obsidian, tried to make a point like the ones Scott sent me.
Is there anything better I could have done?

maybe bleed a little more >:D, hell that's a nice point, just keep at it, bub

2nd point!?!? Is there anything you can't do Bryce? The only possible advice I can offer is to straighten your cutting edge. It is sort of zig zagging back and forth a bit. If you get the cutting edge in a straight line it will penetrate much better. Other than that, that's impressive! Josh

Turn it upside down so that red streak looks like a 7. Right now it looks like an L... and it's definitely not a Loser. ;)

Will do :)

That's a really neat looking point.

Nice work Bryce is that your 2nd point you ever made or the 2nd point of the day it looks good. 8)

2nd point ever.
I tried that novaculite. But I wasn't aggressive enough with it and I couldn't get it down so I put the box aside. This obsidian is more suited for me. Takes a gentle touch. And not much effort and I like that :)

Ok. So these are my thoughts for improvement. A goal to shoot for so to speak? I see that some of the mass on your point is more on one side of the center line that the other side. This is really just a looks thing in my opinion but i suppose it is possible for it to affect flight patterns and strength? so maybe work on removing mass from the point so the sides are fairly even. also getting the zig zags smaller so its a bit straighter would probably look better and allow for a smoother pass into an animal. Next is the profile, it looks much better than anything I've made but it does have some of it sticking out side the triangular line and some that is inside by a bit, so working on keeping it on the line of the triangle or whatever line you are trying to work with(could be a curved for some point like a gunther, and serrations are fine for that of course.) This one is purely aesthetics and nothing more(I think) and is just something that would make it look nicer. Over all for a second point it is exceedingly nice! Much better than what I have made and I'm at something like 30 points.
Also, can you post pics of what you are using for tools? I would really like to see what you are using and maybe thats something to how you're doing as well as natural talent.

nice work Pinecone!

Graham, those lumps of mass are areas that I couldn't reach. That picture of the edge is just showing the edge and is at an angle. I agree with the zig zag part though and I'll fix it later.
At his point I don't really care about perfection, or flake scare patterns and all that. Just honing the skill a bit. Diving in head first.
I think I might have made it too thin in the first place:/
Thanks peeps! Everything noted :)
-
I don't see anything wrong with that point. I'd haft it up & use it. Nice skills your working on. :). Tower
-
That's perfectly fine, I realize that often there are things that we can't do very well if at all. Its just what I'm noting as something to work towards because that would be closer to mastery of the skill, and practice towards that goal is good for many things in knapping other than looks I'm sure.
-
that is a beautiful piece of material I wish I could make one like that ;)
-
That looks like a great point I wouldn't hesitate to put on a stick. Fine job with that one, sir.
-
I agree, make ya up a set and go huntin. Or one and go huntin, whatever you prefer. That's a fine second point right there :).
-
Mighty fine for your second one. ;D I bet my 50th didn't look that good.
-
Wow, that looks great. You've got the talent for it, apparently.
-
2nd point wow! I'd put it on a stick and loose it. Ed
-
Thanks again guys. Still a lot to learn. It took me quite a long time to make :/ but. Enjoyed every second of it! Sooooo much fun! I've got a couple bows in the works but I put them in the corner so I have room to knap:)
I'm having a hard time spalling off good chunks. Anybody know of a video? Or how to? On the subject.
Thanks again!
-
Bryce leave me check my DVDs I think one or two of them shows how to spall if so I'll send them to you then you can send them back when your finished with them.
-
Way to go Piney! I did just the opposite. Started knapping and when the bow fever hit my knapping went on the back burner for about 3 years. Now I try and balance my time . Bow , rock , bow , rock
Knapper

Wow that is a great 2nd point. Keep em comming.

Nice job, pinecone! Check out the local museums and you would be hard pressed to find examples as fine as that. The masters of the art on here do give you something to strive for , but I would say you should be quite proud of that one. Check out "Allergichobbit"'s (Patrick Blank's) videos on youtube. Just about the most informative around.

You suck! And I want my points back!! >:( send a guy some of my best work after 6 YEARS of practice and he shows me up on try 2!!! (grumble, grumble) Completely inconsiderate, that's what you are.
Nice work, Bryce! Once you get the hang of the spalling, you will probably enjoy that more than the pressure work!
-
Let me tell yah Scott those points you sent me are a great example of what skill level I hope to achieve.
-
Definitely a winner. That would make any arrow prettier. Probably fly pretty darn straight from my bow too. ;)
Seriously, nice point for second or hundredth.

Slicker than snot on a door knob! For a second try, you need to be slapped! you should have a big pile of gravel, and parts, and pieces that have been flung far and wide throughout your yard, and knapping area! Then after a year or two, you show that one! Sheesh, where are the moderators, when it comes to site etiquette! Ok, that is a nice point. But at least lie, and say you have been knapping for a few years, and just got back into it, or something like that. You don't see me posting any of my crap, uh, stuff do you? No you don't! Because I have site etiquette. Could have something to do with my skill level after all these years.....
But as for too thin, no way, that is perfect! Nice job.

thanks guys :) the encouragement is almost too much, but i have a long way to go to equal some of the skill on this site.

It took me 3 yrs to get that far.But then i was on my own with no internet and one vhs tape,oh well... I have worked a lot of obsidian,to clean it up get you a real fine abrader.grind with the edge til it gets dusty or white.go with the edge.If you go against it you will pull off parts you will need.Get a sharp tool or a flat (looks like a flat screw driver)either one will work.Use a corner on the flat tool apply pressure and roll your wrist while pushing in.the amount of pressure in and down force will change depending on how far u want to travel and how much needs to be taken off.Start at one end, look for platforms with defined ridges.Follow the ridge.you will see it flatten out and take shape.Grind again lightly and use the sharp pointed tool.get u a starting point again and take off flakes at or below center.Make sure u are far enough away from the last pass.If too close it will not follow the previous flake scar. Can't wait to see number three!!!!!
