Title: Simple Crepe Myrtle Bow
Post by: blackhawk on October 01, 2013, 06:50:07 pm
This is a simple, boring,no frills semi bendy handle flatbow made from a crepe myrtle stave I got from Kenny(Lesken2011) down at the Tennessee Classic....its 61"ntn...and 56@26"...osage tip overlays ..and a hemp wrap handle ,and that's about it  ::) well,i guess it shoots pretty hard and good  ;)

Blackhawk,

Stunning bow! I don't use that word often. I like simple bows very much and that one gives up nothing to the fancy ones.

How big would you guess the "tree"  was that that stave came  from?

Beautiful bow Chris.Everything about it.Sweet full draw.I imagine the tillering went a little faster with this one opposed to what you've been tillering lately.
dwardo....He's allergic to sinew and horn.It gives him the willys.

Thanks for the responses everybody :)

Yes Gabe, I did temper it once before it was braced, and that's all it needed

Jstason no that is not the natural color of the wood...its naturally white, and I dyed it to achieve that color..thanks

Wouldn't be the first time adb  :o

Jim I believe it came from a 3-4" diameter "Shrub"..n prob closer to 3"...thanks

I'm not scared of horn Ed...I use it on my bows all the time..there called tip overlays ;)

And thanks again all :)

Well, It is nice to see a master at work, Chris. You got way more out of that stave than I could have. I love the way it turned out. I wondered which of you guys would start on the crepe myrtle first. I guess you win the prize.

I don't remember, was that the stave that was the sister to mine...already split, or was it whole?

Title: Re: Simple Crepe Myrtle Bow
Post by: blackhawk on October 02, 2013, 08:53:12 am
Thanks Kenny...this was one was already split and I believe the sister to yours ;) I only tempered in 2" and it still kept a setback resting profile, and it returns fast..pretty good stuff...I'd like to try some more thats for sure...it reminded me a bit of flowering dogwood, but maybe a hair better and different? But I don't like drawing conclusions after only one, need to do a few to several before I can say for certain...

I'll think on that...maybe more staves at next year's classic, if you make it. Did you treat it pretty much like other white woods?
Title: Re: Simple Crepe Myrtle Bow
Post by: blackhawk on October 02, 2013, 09:12:09 am
If I'm still walking this earth I'll be there ;)..... I pretty much treated it like any other good whitewood...its an 1 9/16" wide at fade till mid limb, and like I said one heat treatment before brace is all it needed...with the highesh crown it almost acts as if its trapped a lil,and I also kept it hot boxed and at proper mc while in between/before tillering/working on it(between 6-7%mc)

Sweeet.   How do you do the tip overlays/what's the procedure for an un-stained tip overlay on a stained bow?  Do you just glue on over the dyed wood? Does the stain affect the glue at all?

Thanks chuck n Brycey boy...

Bubbles the overlays where already on and finish sanded before the dye....I just try to be careful and brush the dye "on the line" (like when coloring..stay inside the line and right on it..lol)..and if I have an oops I can just take a round edged scraper and scrape away my mistake where I went over the line..at least that's how I do it....maybe someone has a better way? I've tried tape..but with dye it tends to still bleed over in a spot or two still needing cleanup....thanks man ;)

Greg thats just called being slow, not patience....if you and your family relied on you harvesting food with a bow you'd all be dead

I was staying at a beach house in New Jersey last week and just found out what crepe myrtle looked like. Seems like it would be hard to find a stave worthy of a bow. You certainly managed it with this bow.

Staves are grown when the tree is on a bowyer's property. I keep the sucker growth off up to 6 feet, then wait till the saplings turn into wrist sized trunks. I'm ready to harvest a nice crop soon, maybe today. :)
