Title: Sinew Backed Juniper
Post by: TimPotter on September 27, 2013, 08:39:58 am
I brought the stave back from California, given me by a friend who cut it from the mountains in Utah. From the beginning I wanted to do something along the lines of Ishi's style of bow. The sinew came from local deer legs and some from Michigan deer, one a very large buck that made my local doe legs look like coyote's. So I shredded the local stuff 1st and did 2 courses of sinew followed by the long 12-14" Michigan buck sinew. Let it cure for about 3 months, then covered in deer raw hide. Then put it away for nearly a year.

The result is 53" n-to-n and 45# at 28".

The only full draw I have at the moment is from a video on my photobucket account.

I still might do some sort of Northern California Native artwork on the back, but for now I like the way it blends in with the forest. Natural camo. ;D

Thank you!

I still have 2 one gallon ziplock bags full of sinew and a Northwestern piece of yew headed my way via mail from another friend in California and want to do something similar. Never tried yew before. But I really like how this juniper worked out.

very nice. love the paint scheme. did you induce the reflex in the limbs, or did the sinew pull it? what kind of draw weight did you get? great job.

Thank you very much. I based the paint job on a bow I saw in a California museum. It was faded with age but this was the original color and design scheme.  :)
