Tom built an Osage primitve bow on Mountain Men last nite. He put sinew on the belly and snake skin on the back. Is this ok....?
I have to wonder if this is because Tom don't know, or is it a case of the reality producers not getting their facts right?
-
Lmao! He put sinew on the belly ???
-
Was he shooting it the next day? ::) Its "reality" TV
-
It was in last seasons episode and I'm quite sure he put it on the back. He build the whole thing in one day supposedly. And shot it a few times the next before giving it to the guy for his son or something.
-
Yes Sir,
Was wondering if this would be noticed in the PA Community...
It was a two day build.
Sinew backed and skinned.
Finished and Shooting in two days.
Ready to be given as a Birthday Gift on the third day.
:)

Sinew has zero compresion strength .. but is high in tension strength . It does no good on the bellly . Waste of time and sinew . It belongs on the back of the bow to move the nutral zo e in the center up to the back thus making the bow almost unbreakable . It can be "crushed" but its very hard to "snap" so ... it may "work" but it did absolutly no good
-
That one limb had a pretty sweet hinge in the middle of it too. He should have taken a few more breaks during the build, like his wife told him ::)
-
Don't believe ANYTHING that has been edited.
I could relate a few TV 'strories'.
-
No one is perfect. He must have just learned. Jawge
-
I just watched it. He didn't put sinew on the belly, he reverse-strung the bow and sinewed the back, before applying the snake skin over the sinew.
-
I see WILLS I've never seen anyone sinew the belly.
You can bet he was'nt shooting the bow the next day when he sinewed it.
You should wait a week. I wait a couple or longer to let it totally dry and for the glue to season really well. Hide glue drys SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
You've already went through a lot of waiting a couple weeks more would'nt matter.
-
A closer look at the bow he was shooing the next day revealed that the osage had already tuned dark so it wasn't the same bow he was working on the day before. The so called "finished bow" did have a monster hinge in one limb, perhaps I should send him a tillering gizmo to use on future bows.
The producers cater the series to city folk that don't know a bow from a broom stick, they can fill the story line with all kinds of BS that almost no one picks up on except us folk that actually know a thing or two about what is depicted.
-
I'm sure they don't feel like spending the time to build a quality bow just for a quick segment in a low budget TV show. Just throw something out there that will sling out an arrow once or twice.
Like cooking shows, they mix the ingredients, set it aside, and then pull the finished product out of the oven. They don't have time to wait on sinew to dry. I don't blame em. They weren't filming for PA. They probly did that whole thing in the same day. Its a TV show.
-
I think that it "had to be done in 2 days" just because the producers for these "reality" shows always seem to think that it's necessary to have some impossible deadline to meet, in order to add suspense. For some reason they fail to see that a show like that could be interesting just following those men in their day to day lives, without all the scripted BS added. I had high hopes when I saw the previews for the first season, but I find it hard to watch without laughing these days.
-
Tom is a 100% stud. That dude lives hard with a beat up body and just keeps going and going. I admire that greatly in a man. I don't care what the writers do, I can see through it.
-
Man, I am out of the loop on this one. What channel is this on?
-

Its on History channel up here.
-
I'd have to agree with pearl. I bet he's seen and done more than most ;)
-
Yeah no doubting hes a tough old guy, but, i bet a little sliver of him died inside thinking he was duping people that dont know any better about a two day bow build,, course he could be thinking ,, i can buy a new truck with all this new cash i just got for duping all those unsuspecting city folks too..either way...lol..personally..its tv ..i dont expect much reality in my tv
-
I don't know about the credibility of tv,but I have an osage flight bow from the fourties that has sinew on the back and belly.it is from a ninety year old lady that was flight shooting champ in my state in 1946.i would love for one of you guys to recreate it.Pearl,blackhawk.anyone interested?i can send you the bow for dimensions.
-
I don't put much stock in "reality" shows a bow build in 2 days is very much doable. But with sinew, snakeskin, and a finish. that's not possible.
But they're making tv for the yuppies that think living on a mountian side is adventurous and a crazy way of life.
But when your born and raised that way (like most of us on PA) then watching it isn't all that enjoyable, or interesting.
Responses to the show probably sounds like this;
Yuppies:"why is he chopping wood in the wind and snow!? That's nuts! He's gotta be freezing!"
CountryFolk:"gotta keep warm"
-
When he and his brother went out to release the "hawk" (peregrine falcon) I kinda sat there with my jaw hanging slack and agape. Most falconers would dope slap an apprentice for using the wrong name for a bird, whether it was hawk, falcon, or sulphur crested cockatoo. As a group, they are sticklers for details and look down their noses at folks with OCD as "disorganized". Fact is, falcons are genetically closer to parrots than they are hawks, it's just dumbfounding that a falconer would screw up that badly.
Yeah, it's nitpicking. But no more so than us nitpicking the now famous 2 day sinew backed bow. It just ain't so. I just can't watch this stuff anymore, I feel what little intelligence I had is slipping away rapidly.
-
The problem is, these shows aren't meant to be intelligent. Life doesn't have much drama, so if a show was REAL then nobody would watch. A non-bowyer isn't going to be too happy when his Friday night tv dinner is ruined because a 40 minute show is 100% filled with a bloke making a bow over a period of 2 months. It's not tv.
Now, one could argue "don't show the fake stuff then" but lets face it... How many prime time shows out there even mention Osage bows, sinew backing, snake skin etc? If that adapted scene got one new person into making bows, or discovering falconry, then it's hard to say it's a bad thing.
We're all the same - everybody has passions about something, and if that subject appears on tv it's never shown properly because the rest of the public who don't give a hoot won't be interested in the details and will switch over. It's a nightmare being a professional musician because I can't watch shows like the voice or x factor etc as I know how insane the format is, but I love how many younger kids are learning to sing or play an instrument based off the shows. The moment they actually try it, the shows begin to look fake to them, they move away from the screen and learn properly.
Somebody watching mountain men might think bow making looks awesome, primitive, creative and so on, grab some wood, make some mistakes, research, learn, make more mistakes and so on until 10 years later people are asking him for advice on a Perry reflex because they saw a commercial for beer that was set in a forest where guys were shooting cans with hand made bows or something.... I dunno.
Point is, be glad TV went to the trouble to feature a hand made bow, instead of a shop bought recurve, and don't worry about details. Entertainment TV isn't there for learning, it's an introduction.
-
Sucked all the fun outta that thread didjnt ya. :'( but yup.
-
I disagree, I a lie is a lie no matter who tells it and under which conditions. Putting out misinformation is telling a lie.
Of course there are allowable lies, like like answering the question "honey, does this dress make me look fat", but that is about it in my opinion.
-
+1 WillS
I didn't become a bowyer because I watched a guy spend a week making a bow properly, I did it because some reality tv magic produced one from a 2x4 in an episode of whatever show I can't remember the name of. I broke three bows before discovering ceder isn't the best bow wood, and two more before I discovered you should have a clean back. Three one-month lasting bows later, I discovered bowyers who would give me advice, and my first (seriously underweight) properly tillered BL bow from a stave I gut myself was born. Now people want to buy my bows, but I just want to experiment with new designs and woods.
'Reality' tv doesn't make the claim that everything they do is realistic, or especially that what they do should be attempted. We don't think Bear Grills runs just as authentic a survival show/situation as Les Stroud, do we?
-
Here's a seen from a show that has bugged me from the 1st time I seen it. Dual Survival ( I like the show) this is set in Washington State. 1st off we don't have many turkeys, very few turkeys on the wet side of the Mt.s.
Dave kills a Turkey with a bow, if you watch the video at about 40 seconds. Dave runs after the bird, it looks to me as the turkey hits the end of its leash and bounces back at him. Or was it just me reading too much into it. Anyway hope you enjoy it. Ed

Ed that guy 'Dave' is a known liar. And I would not be surprised if he and the producers cooked that scene up.
But you are right, we have dang near 0 turkeys this side of the cascades. The only ones Ive seen are either in the store or are being raised for slaughter.

Dave canterbury ? "a known liar " hahahahahahahahHahahahahah ::)

Fact Mr. Joe, he lied about his entire backround experience. Google it if you don't believe me. Or read the statement given by Cody about the matter. It's also the reason he was fired by discovery.

Nah... I'm not an "Ends Justify The Means" kinda guy...
The Devil is in the Details.
I do kinda like the family in Alaska.
The one where the native woman does the shooting...
I'd like to hang and hunt with them.
The rest I Fast Forward through any more. 8)
But each to their own.
HIJACK WARNING!!!
Anybody watching Sleepy Hollow?
What kinda Bird of Prey is in that show?
Sharp Shinned Hawk maybe? Haven't had a chance to dig through my BOP Books yet...
Maybe I should start a Sleepy Hollow thread... O:)

Yeah, I don't like the lack of turkey here... But I've got deer and elk in my yard every day. They think my place is safe because the old couple who was here before didn't hunt and didn't allow hunting on the ten acres of forest and two acre open field >:D >:D >:D

Huisme: Are you not hunting with a bow, or how did you do? I do like the fact we have lots of elk. Ed
-
I'm taking one more year to practice before I take a shot at anything. I've been making bows a lot longer than I've been shooting them with accuracy in mind ::) I've shot thousands of arrows at ten paces shooting in my bows, but only a few hundred as target practice with my vine maple bow I still haven't photographed and shown you guys.
But next year I'mma have a hay-day in my back yard >:D

How about someone posing on the cover of an archery magazine with a buffalo that was shot with a 30-30?

Sadly that happens too often.

Couldnt agree more Eric.
-
JW, your statement is so true and this person your referring to keeps getting articles in archery magazines..imagine that! and his whole made up background and persona is a lie!
-
I refuse to read his articles when they are in the PA magazine.
-
Was wonderin how long it would be before this subject came up again.LOL
-
It's simple and it's been said:
Don't ever believe anything you see on TV.
It's just always grossly out of context. Usually, if you think of the camera team that's present, all the staff and stuff that will be there, you already get a much better picture of what it really must have been like. It's just made purely with regard to what you see in the end. Whatever can conveniently be faked will be. Sequences will be changed, things cut. No bad intentions, just professionality. ;D
-
Most of those survival shows disclaim that certain situations are set up to show what to do in that situation. When Bear Grylls came to the "wilderness" of Alabama ( ::)what a joke) he set a snare for a pig and when he didn't catch one they put one in the trap so they could show what to do if you caught one. They place he came to "survive" in is hardly a mile wide in most places. I don't think it ever gets more than 3 miles wide. Hardly considered "Wilderness". It is still better than Sister Wives.
If you want true reality then don't turn on a TV. Go get in the woods.

That about sums it up for me as well...
Only thing I would add is, "Or the Bow/Wood Shop"... :)

+1 for each of these comments!
I HATE "reality" TV. The acting is horrible, (...and that is what it is!), and the plots are incredibly predictable. It is however the ultimate in Corporate class ARTFORM: very low budget to create, nearly no residual cost to re-run or synidcate the content, quick single take production plans or very limited re-takes, and the basest behaviors and emotions are captured and portrayed with little or no art or finesse.
I resent even more those RTV type shows that approach my personal real life interests.
...I'll step down off this soapbox now...

I didn't know this thread I started would stir up so much controversy. Ya well reality TV is what it is, kind of like real TV in some aspects. But then again you have the internet now which has its evil face and people been not themselves, making stuff up. Its sad that today most people only know how to communicate with their I-phones, when you talk to them in real time, the true emotions do not exist, How sad... >:( Children as young as 3 years of age are using these hand held devices..! When I go donwtown you don't often see a lot of people out and about, Why..? because they are sitting at home chatting and surfing.

She's in the living room texting him in the man cave asking where their kids are....

Lol

It all makes me think of P.T. Barnum. (If he lived in the mountains) ;D
-
My wife and I visited a so called primitive tribe of indians in central america where they sold trinkets and all kinds of do dads. Supposedly they lived there in their primitive state in raised huts.
This was part of a tour.
My wife noticed no cooking fires.
Then, there it was in the corner of a hut...there sat a very primitive iPhone. Lol.
It was good entertainment. LOl.
Mt men is too.
-
That's too funny George!

I'm sure they don't feel like spending the time to build a quality bow just for a quick segment in a low budget TV show.
I know, but if that is the case, than why didn't they just make a normal selfbow? An experienced bowyer can have a nice selfbow made up in no time if they have to.
I agree with everyone that it is just plain BS entertainment of course, but George does have a point, that the guy really might not know better (or care, either way).
