Title: Curious method for checking tiller...
Post by: Capt on September 07, 2013, 07:38:15 pm
Weird method i just thought up while re tillering my bow..

I was looking at some profiles of my bow at full draw and started checking the curve with a roll of masking tape as a guide...

Bow Pic on my ipad taking pic with iPhone to load up here for criticism.....

So how does the tiller look? I want honesty.. This is my first time building a bow so I'm looking to learn from constructive criticism?..

Personally, I don't use a tiller stick and I would never leave a bow at full draw on a tiller stick like that. I only leave my bows at full draw on the tiller tree long enough to see what I want to see.
What front profile does your bow have? Also, why are your tips so long? Extra tip material makes your bow slower and gives it more hand shock.

There is an old adage that a bow full drawn is 7/8ths broken.  We've had enough arguement on that over the years to fill a series of books, the the spirit of the adage says a lot.  The longer it is at draw the thinner that 1/8th gets.  ADB isn't steering you wrong!

The roll of masking tape is yet another variation on a long theme.  Didja know that the bottom of a bottle or can does the same?  However, I have found that too many checks of the tiller while tilting a bottle or can, often ruins the tiller.   ::)  Not sure what it is in the process that causes things to go wonky, maybe I need to do more research.

Never the less, any trick that helps you turn out a workable bow or improves your technique is something worth sharing.

best way to check the tiller is to take a picture, then you can look at fulldraw all day long.

That looks better! And BOWMAN53 is right... take a pic at full draw and you can critique it 'til your eyes cross!

Like what has already been said, DON'T LET YOUR BOW SIT ON THE TREE DRAWN ALL THE WAY BACK THAT CAUSES EXCESSIVE STRING FOLLOW AND COULD BREAK IT. Don't do it. Ive already done it my self let it sit for 30 seconds and BOOM! Exploded on the tree

I found myself using the brim of my cap on one bow a while back. Mostly to see how even the limbs looked in the early tiller.

The grain I see at your tips has me worried. Board bow? What type wood? Can we see a pic of the back?
