Title: follow and help me along the way. (DYE JOB DONE)
Post by: BOWMAN53 on August 29, 2013, 01:29:28 pm
I got this stave in a trade with Pearly, osage orange 69" long and around 2" wide. Im confident ill get a great bow out of this but it doesnt hurt to have all you experts help me out along the way. the stave has some twist to it, mostly at the end of one limb so i chopped off 7" and now im down to 62". I plan on going with a flatbow design with slight recurves. im aiming for 60# @ 27" i found the center and drew my lines at 1 1/2" wide, the length of the bow. i trimmed it down, close to the lines but not too close.
feel free to chime in and tell me im doing something wrong or give me advice, i want to get the most out of this baby.

Looks like about a 30 degree twist, that will come out eezy peezy with dry heat. No knots will really help you along as well.

i need to take it down one more ring right, the one its on is thin.
Title: Re: follow and help me along the way.
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on August 29, 2013, 02:18:52 pm
Only if its not cleaned up. Im thinking it is. Scrape the back clean of sealer and see if any rings show through, if not? Make a bow.
Title: Re: follow and help me along the way.
Post by: BOWMAN53 on August 29, 2013, 02:34:12 pm
I'm pretty sure it's clean too. I thought needed a thick ring for the back.
Title: Re: follow and help me along the way.
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on August 29, 2013, 02:35:15 pm
Nope, a clean ring is what a back needs. Thick, thin or in between doesn't matter to me.

+1 pearl. Thin thick doesn't matter to me. If its clean its right as rain.

Cool,so you transfered the line with the most wiggle to the center and then to the opposite side?
Title: Re: follow and help me along the way.
Post by: BOWMAN53 on August 29, 2013, 03:34:54 pm
i found the center of the bows width and followed the grain all the way down. then i went back to the center and and measured out 3/4" to both sides, making it 1 1/2" wide and followed the grain again all the way down the legnth.

Osage+ heat = butter ;) ....its not hard at all to bend once good n hot...and osage is the best wood to make extreme heat shapes n bends too for bows...and the number two is a distant second...

#1. Reduce it down to stiff floor tiller

#2. Make the last 6" or so a half inch thick and on one ring

#3. Shellac those ends...all surfaces around the tips

#4. Steam for an hour to make sure its good n hot n pliable

#5. Have everything ready close to the bow steaming, and quickly make your bend all in one swoosh(I use a metal strap behind the belly, some folks don't),and sooner than 30 seconds out of the steaming apparatus. All kinds of things to bend it over...be creative.

#6. Let set till cool ...then repeat step 5 for the other tip

#7. Tiller that bad boy out after letting it set for a couple days

#8. Enjoy shooting your smooooooth sexy static osage recurve ;)  >:D

You can't make that kind of a bend with dry heat(at that thickness) without it cracking too much...you should use steam...its easy, and much easier for someone with little to none experience making such bends..trust me...use steam...get a pot of water boiling and cover it with tin foil and stick the tips in that to steam it...just make sure all the women are out of the house and don't know what your doing to there kitchen >:D

I got my limbs tapered to 1" starting at 15" from the tips. I also trimmed the belly on the fat boy but still got a ways to go.

its amazing how such an awesome weapon can come from a piece of wood. i would love to ask the first person who made a bow how they came up with such a bizarre idea.

Looks pretty good so far!  I use a similar technique for removing twist.  For future reference, if you cut a scrap piece of wood to length and prop it under the tip that your twisting, it will keep the limb from deflexing from the weight of your bucket when you heat it up.  I have several old broomsticks cut to various lengths for just that purpose.  Josh

Josh, I use the shaft of an old golf club for that same purpose.  It just happens to be the perfect height and the rubber grip won't slip on the wood.

Just keep the bow away from the right angle cause it divert the heat under and it will scorch the back .

Don't worry about that. If you are concernced you can heat it up with your gun and tweak it. I wouldn't mess with it. Looking good. The string HAS to lay down the center, not just cross the handle somewhere. Looks nice.

i meant the actual recurve is 1/2" longer, i didnt push it all the way into the form.

i removed alot of wood from the belly to make the string alignment easier. i should have it done tonight.

That twist is driving me crazy, it keeps going back. I'll be more drastic this time and leave it in the jig longer.

Post by: PEARL DRUMS on September 05, 2013, 03:03:18 pm
Time in the jig wont help. Pour more heat to it and over bend it farther. When its cool to the touch, usually within an hour, its where it will be.

The way I see it, you are gonna have one whale of a hard time hitting target weight. Those hooks are gonna make it feel like you have 50% more poundage than you actually have until they pop over all at once. Hope you have a plan for that. Otherwise, that thing is looking sweet!!

Whoa whoa whoa must be Trippin Blackhawk cuz there is no way we are ending the season without the Lombardi in hand.  And, im going to predict Quinton Patton wins rookie of the year AND kap gets MVP. I got lots of faith in my team.

Hey Jordan, i've been following this thread close as i am planning on a very similar bow, got my stave picked out now! I've never done one before but i don't see how the string alignment could get better!

PS I don't care how the niners do this year as long as they beat the crap out of the packers like they did last year in the playoffs! Being from minnesota I hate the packers!

Well the alignment question for pearl was really just a rhetorical question, to show him i didnt skimp out and not do it.

And yeah, im gonna laugh my butt off if kap sits in the pocket and tears up their secondary and doesnt run at all lol.

I got my first Osage stave on its way from Iowa.... I live in Mexico..... Planning something real similar, I want to get a Cetershot Flatbow out of it... A little recurve... Shooting for something between 55 - 60 lbs...

This thread has given me lots of crucial pointers already.... I'm just getting done with my first bow that I made out of some weird Mexican wood called Tzalam.....

Check it out under the bows section.... Title is something like Tzalam Flatbow.... Or just search Tzalam I'm sure nobody else ever mentioned it in a thread....

Take Scott's advice and be mindful of the early weight and string tension. It will make your bow feel like 80# when really its 60#. The key to statics is getting them braced short and as soon as possible. Wait too long and you get a 35-40# bow you may not want.

How many lbs is it pulling right now at 28"??

And what was your n2n dimension when you got done?

Tiller looks good by my eyes I maybe a greenhorn but I'm anal about symmetry and such... Bait obsessive compulsive... All my life I've had a need to straighten out objects on tables, pictures on walls, re arrange fridge magnets and such...

Getting into bow making I guess will channel my weirdness into something productive??  ???

pearl, some of the damn twist came back again. whats your advice?

scott, i was gonna start sanding it and fix that flat spot last night but then i noticed the twist in one limb.

the twist isnt very much  just enough to let the string slip off the curve

The twist you see now isn't the stave anymore Im guessing. It must me a thickness issue. Check your side to side very closely, top and bottom limb.

Brace it at about 4-5" and take a pic showing a tip to tip alignment from the belly side. Know what I mean?

the main contributor to hand shock is bad tiller, and heavy tips. there are some other things that cause it too like your limbs being off timed (they dont come back at the same speed)

a 5/32 or 7/32 round file works. Make them a minimum 2/3 the diameter of the file deep. The string needs to stay put.
