I got this stave in a trade with Pearly, osage orange 69" long and around 2" wide. Im confident ill get a great bow out of this but it doesnt hurt to have all you experts help me out along the way. the stave has some twist to it, mostly at the end of one limb so i chopped off 7" and now im down to 62". I plan on going with a flatbow design with slight recurves. im aiming for 60# @ 27" i found the center and drew my lines at 1 1/2" wide, the length of the bow. i trimmed it down, close to the lines but not too close.
feel free to chime in and tell me im doing something wrong or give me advice, i want to get the most out of this baby.

Looks like about a 30 degree twist, that will come out eezy peezy with dry heat. No knots will really help you along as well.
-
i need to take it down one more ring right, the one its on is thin.
-
Only if its not cleaned up. Im thinking it is. Scrape the back clean of sealer and see if any rings show through, if not? Make a bow.
-
I'm pretty sure it's clean too. I thought needed a thick ring for the back.
-
Nope, a clean ring is what a back needs. Thick, thin or in between doesn't matter to me.
-
Ok cool cuz i wasnt lookin forward to chasing a ring lol
-
Keep in mind it may matter to some builders, just not this one!
-
Ubercool thread b/m,would you object if I asked a question or 2 along the way?
-

Well id take your advice over most.
-
Ubercool thread b/m,would you object if I asked a question or 2 along the way?
Ask away my friend, you might ask a question that may have never thought to ask before
-
+1 pearl. Thin thick doesn't matter to me. If its clean its right as rain.
-
Cool,so you transfered the line with the most wiggle to the center and then to the opposite side?
-
i found the center of the bows width and followed the grain all the way down. then i went back to the center and and measured out 3/4" to both sides, making it 1 1/2" wide and followed the grain again all the way down the legnth.
-
I can't believe pearly sent ya that boring junk of a stave....i at least would've sent ya something with some character,AND made ya chase a ring(that's the fun part) ;D  I think you can do about anything you want within reason with that one...give it some true static recurves ;)

Good lookin start, now break out the hatchet and draw knives cause you got some wood to remove!

ok ok you conviced me ill add some "real hooks"

bow peer pressure.........just say no, just say no, just say no............ lol

Osage+ heat = butter ;) ....its not hard at all to bend once good n hot...and osage is the best wood to make extreme heat shapes n bends too for bows...and the number two is a distant second...
#1. Reduce it down to stiff floor tiller
#2. Make the last 6" or so a half inch thick and on one ring
#3. Shellac those ends...all surfaces around the tips
#4. Steam for an hour to make sure its good n hot n pliable
#5. Have everything ready close to the bow steaming, and quickly make your bend all in one swoosh(I use a metal strap behind the belly, some folks don't),and sooner than 30 seconds out of the steaming apparatus. All kinds of things to bend it over...be creative.
#6. Let set till cool ...then repeat step 5 for the other tip
#7. Tiller that bad boy out after letting it set for a couple days
#8. Enjoy shooting your smooooooth sexy static osage recurve ;) >:D

for some reason when i read this one, it was narrated in a Barry White voice lol

ill try the dry heat first

You can't make that kind of a bend with dry heat(at that thickness) without it cracking too much...you should use steam...its easy, and much easier for someone with little to none experience making such bends..trust me...use steam...get a pot of water boiling and cover it with tin foil and stick the tips in that to steam it...just make sure all the women are out of the house and don't know what your doing to there kitchen >:D
-
The yellow condensation from the Steam sorta looks like peeeee :o if ya know what I mean ::)

Hey Jordan, nice stave there, your trade bow has pretty thin rings if you take a look at that. I'm planning an osage static as well, you are ahead of my schedule so i'll be following along!
-
Yeah i took a look and compared them last night, they are actually pretty close.
-
I'm working on an osage static recurve as well. I had to chase the ring though. With a gang of pin knots. Ill be following along for some guidance
-
lol maybe i should change the title of this post to, three bowyers, three staves and one design.
-
I got my limbs tapered to 1" starting at 15" from the tips. I also trimmed the belly on the fat boy but still got a ways to go.

its amazing how such an awesome weapon can come from a piece of wood. i would love to ask the first person who made a bow how they came up with such a bizarre idea.

Lookin good my friend,, now the real fun can begin.

He's ALIVE!! lol havent heard from you all week man.

Lol someones gotta wrk around here,,we cant all just build bows all the time!! >:D

I got the twist out, it was so easy it made me laugh and think i was a genius lol. Next i need to get the tips lined up, ill use the same technique.
-
Looks pretty good so far! I use a similar technique for removing twist. For future reference, if you cut a scrap piece of wood to length and prop it under the tip that your twisting, it will keep the limb from deflexing from the weight of your bucket when you heat it up. I have several old broomsticks cut to various lengths for just that purpose. Josh

That's a good idea, it's reflex though.

Josh, I use the shaft of an old golf club for that same purpose. It just happens to be the perfect height and the rubber grip won't slip on the wood.

Nice hook! I have a shop....unfortunately, my wifes family thinks its there own personal free rent storage facility. >:( It seems like everytime I come home, there's more crap in it. The funny thing is, they actually complain about all the sawdust getting on their stuff. Sorry, didn't mean to get off subject. Lol! Your caul looks identical to mine. Josh

Lol inlaws suck

Ok guys, I'm having a problem straightening this stave out. I need to move one limb over about 1 1/2" . I tried heat and weights but its not working well.
-
Just did a quick mock up of how I do tip alignment.usally use all metal clamps though.it's work well for me.there may be a better way,not sure?
-
Thing is, i only have one clamp. Ill have to ask a buddy to barrow some.
-
Just keep the bow away from the right angle cause it divert the heat under and it will scorch the back .
-

Thanks for the tip
-
That's pretty much the way I do it. And yep, I've gotten careless and scorched the back on a few. Josh
-
Ok the hooks are all done.

The left limb is more recurved by 1/2"
-
Looks nice. Ur way ahead of me. I'm still chasing the grain. Took it down to another ring. Pin knots and the new baby girl are keeping me busy.

Thanks man, kids are great. My 2 1/2" daughter wanted a toy bow and arrow or a Donald Duck stuffed animal. She picked the bow. She's my little fishing buddy too. I love her.
The bow is looking nice man. Hope mine follows suit. Lol
-
I tapered the limbs to 1/2"

That's looking great... Can't wait to see the next post.
-
Lookin good bowman , that ow looks dark already
-
The left limb is more recurved by 1/2"
Don't worry about that. If you are concernced you can heat it up with your gun and tweak it. I wouldn't mess with it. Looking good. The string HAS to lay down the center, not just cross the handle somewhere. Looks nice.

i meant the actual recurve is 1/2" longer, i didnt push it all the way into the form.
i removed alot of wood from the belly to make the string alignment easier. i should have it done tonight.
-
Oh, snip the other off then. Make it even.
-
Yup yup. Will do.
-
(http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a631/jamesbowyer89/null_zps33f5340e.jpg)
-
Ok guys, i got the string to pass over the handle but the twist is still there. Am i good or should i attempt to get the twist fully out for the forth time lol
-
Gotta be straighter Jordan. Odds are good it will flip as is.
-
That twist is driving me crazy, it keeps going back. I'll be more drastic this time and leave it in the jig longer.
-
Time in the jig wont help. Pour more heat to it and over bend it farther. When its cool to the touch, usually within an hour, its where it will be.
-
ok ill get that done tonight.
-
Don't hurry it and don't try to cheat it, it will let you know later. Get it right before you do any bending at all.
-
Yes sir :)
-
Ok pearlie, how is this?

Don't think pearlys gonna respond till Monday..he's out prancing like a fairy with a pack on his back flailing his gun ships around on an island in the woods this weekend  ;D ...so now what ya gonna do if he can't help ya right now ::)

lol i can just see it now, chris skipping along in the forest wearing a tutu, fake tinkerbell wings and a dora the explorer backpack lol >:D
well i guess you know a few things about making a bow ;D lol. how long should i let it sit and rehydrate before i start tillering this baby?
-
Haha  ....
How does Monday sound to you
-
I'll have to start on another bow on Saturday to keep me distracted, sunday is all football so Monday is perfect.
-
Don't get to excited about your niners....they ain't going anywhere this year...and if they do they'll just let ya down and lose to a bunch of low life thugs again >:D ....and it sounds like ya got the bowyers disease..just can't wait to work on wood...I've had it for years and haven't found the cure yet...the only thing that helps is to never stop....good luck with yours
-
The way I see it, you are gonna have one whale of a hard time hitting target weight. Those hooks are gonna make it feel like you have 50% more poundage than you actually have until they pop over all at once. Hope you have a plan for that. Otherwise, that thing is looking sweet!!
-
Whoa whoa whoa must be Trippin Blackhawk cuz there is no way we are ending the season without the Lombardi in hand. And, im going to predict Quinton Patton wins rookie of the year AND kap gets MVP. I got lots of faith in my team.

Ive never had a problem hitting my target weight with recurves before, we'll see how it turns out :)
-
i have stage 5 bowyers disease doc says theres no cure only a treatment to help with the impatiences. >:D
-
Hey Jordan, i've been following this thread close as i am planning on a very similar bow, got my stave picked out now! I've never done one before but i don't see how the string alignment could get better!
PS I don't care how the niners do this year as long as they beat the crap out of the packers like they did last year in the playoffs! Being from minnesota I hate the packers!
-

Well the alignment question for pearl was really just a rhetorical question, to show him i didnt skimp out and not do it.
And yeah, im gonna laugh my butt off if kap sits in the pocket and tears up their secondary and doesnt run at all lol.

I got my first Osage stave on its way from Iowa.... I live in Mexico..... Planning something real similar, I want to get a Cetershot Flatbow out of it... A little recurve... Shooting for something between 55 - 60 lbs...
This thread has given me lots of crucial pointers already.... I'm just getting done with my first bow that I made out of some weird Mexican wood called Tzalam.....
Check it out under the bows section.... Title is something like Tzalam Flatbow.... Or just search Tzalam I'm sure nobody else ever mentioned it in a thread....
-
Looking good Jordan. Was it tough to get the twist out with the recurve already there?
-
Looking good Jordan. Was it tough to get the twist out with the recurve already there?
thanks, no it wasnt a problem at all.
-
Did you use the same method as photoed before?
-
yup, exactly.
-
Good work you mouthy little turd!
For your info I wasn't prancing fairy like through the woods. I was manning up and carrying 33 grueling pounds in my pack for 15-16 miles!...;)
-
Only 33 pounds? Lol >:D
-
Cost me a bunch of money to get it that light! 24 oz sleeping bags aint cheap! Neither are 4# tents!
-
Damn, i bet it did cost alot.
-
Take Scott's advice and be mindful of the early weight and string tension. It will make your bow feel like 80# when really its 60#. The key to statics is getting them braced short and as soon as possible. Wait too long and you get a 35-40# bow you may not want.

I've learned that lesson the hard way lol
-
Ok guys ill admit that i kinda scared myself when a hinge appeared lol but i fixed it :) how does the tiller look? I think the top mid limb is stiff
(http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a631/jamesbowyer89/20130909_193447_zps3f144e3f.jpg)
-
Wow, i don't see the stiff upper limb, but i don't have as good of tiller eyes. Looks great to me!
-
Thanks. It's there when you zoom in
-
You're right, a little flat spot, right smack in the middle of the upper limb.
-
Yeah i see very slight stiff spots midlimb on both limbs, moreso on the top limb, but it's really close, lookin good!
-
How many lbs is it pulling right now at 28"??
And what was your n2n dimension when you got done?
Tiller looks good by my eyes I maybe a greenhorn but I'm anal about symmetry and such... Bait obsessive compulsive... All my life I've had a need to straighten out objects on tables, pictures on walls, re arrange fridge magnets and such...
Getting into bow making I guess will channel my weirdness into something productive?? ???
-
Good eye. Its not much though. It looks great Jordan. Told you it was easy.
-
That's darn close! And well done (to this point.) I would focus on sanding it down and then when ready start shooting the crap out of it! That's gonna be a beauty!!
-
thanks guys.
pearl, some of the damn twist came back again. whats your advice?
scott, i was gonna start sanding it and fix that flat spot last night but then i noticed the twist in one limb.
the twist isnt very much just enough to let the string slip off the curve
-

lol use that to your advantage
-
The twist you see now isn't the stave anymore Im guessing. It must me a thickness issue. Check your side to side very closely, top and bottom limb.
-
ok ill look it over before i do anything else. i did take two shots out of it to see if it had any hand shock(just a tiny bit) and it was shooting fast and flat, and really quiet.
-
Brace it at about 4-5" and take a pic showing a tip to tip alignment from the belly side. Know what I mean?
-
What kind of things contribute to hand shock? what is the main thing to watch for or that causes hand shock?
Anyone??

yup i know what you mean.
-

the main contributor to hand shock is bad tiller, and heavy tips. there are some other things that cause it too like your limbs being off timed (they dont come back at the same speed)
-
Here is the string alignment. The string just barely slips off, i was thinking of adding string bridges to fix it.
-
Have you filed string grooves into the belly side of the statics? That makes a world of difference.
-
Have you filed string grooves into the belly side of the statics? That makes a world of difference.
No but ill make sure to do that.
-
a 5/32 or 7/32 round file works. Make them a minimum 2/3 the diameter of the file deep. The string needs to stay put.
-
should i put the bridge on there too?
-
No
-
Ok
-
Got the handle shaped, really didn't want to cut that deep but oh well. I shot it some more as well, this baby packs one hell of a punch, this is the hardest hitting bow I've made so far.

Man that's looking Good!! I might just haveta try me one of them.
-
Whats wrong with shootin off yer knuckle dude? >:D
-
What's wrong with shooting off a shelf? I like a shelf for the winter because shooting with gloves off the knuckle can be an adventure.
-
Nothin wrong with a shelf...just pokin bowman in the eye.
-
I couldn't help myself, i caught shelfatitus lol

Try rubbing the stain line with 0000 steel wool. It will fade and blend it wonderfully.
-
Damn, i don't have any steel wool.
-
I've heard that if you hold a 9 volt battery up to the steel wool while you polish your bow it will give it a deep satin sheen. ;) Your bow looks great!
-
80%humidity is delaying the finish.
-
My experience has been that if you don't use something (like poly) that has some UV protection qualities, ur entire bow will soon have the same color as ur tips. Otherwise, looking good!
-
im using helmsman spar urathane which is a uv blocker so im good on that part. thanks for the heads up though.
