Fellas,
Sometimes good friends can really throw you a major league curve-ball. Thought I'd post the start of the latest challenge I received from Don (very bad man). The stave is 35" total and I have to get hunting weight and a minimum over 1/2 length draw....
wanted ya to see what I was startin with, will post up the results when done, either broke or a bow. Mr. Don, pay-backs is hell my friend.

This oughta be interesting... Brian
-
:o Where's the other limb!? ;D
-
I'll be watchin'.
-
>:D
-
I have faith in you Rich!
-
It looks like a nice piece of osage so I think if anyone can do it you can Rich.
(Might want to wear a helmet with a face shield for the full draw test tho...) ;)
-
does it have to be a selfbow? No sinew?
-
So you need 45'ish at 17"? That shouldn't be a problem at all Rich. That's a clean stick.
-
I think it's doable for the Yoda of the short selfbow
-
Well it's a bow, but missed my challenge by 2/3 pounds ::)
I took the photos without any final finish so ya could see that there was no hanky-panky goin on. So here's the spec's. 33 1/2 inches ntn, 42/43# at 17" (low weight). It has a mass weight of 5-5/8 ounces (1267 grains) . the physical size is: width, center-.99", midlimb .94", tip .468" and thickness is: center .426", midlimb .398, tip .263.
The last 2 pics will show the arrow length to the color band (17-1/2") and the weight of the bow. if ya got any questions or I forgot something please let me know. I am thinking of putting a nice bull-snake skin on it, after I decide wether or not to sinew back it, because to be truthfull I'm bummed about missing weight, that bites.

Sweet, bet that punches 'em out :)

Nice!

The TSA is going to have to start checking people getting on a plane for Osage yard sticks!

That's a cool little shooter. I love short bows.
-
I knew you'd pull it off, what ya missed # by 2 #, not like ya had any room for error, you are the evil master of the short bow Rich, bub
-
LOL. I new you would do it, just not that quick.
Looking forward to seeing it backed with the bull snake. If you do.
Looks good Rich. ;D
How does it shoot?
-
Real nice bow and quite the accomplishment to get that weight and draw and still in one piece. Looks like a fun one to shoot as well.
-
That was quick..! I figured you could do it but not this soon. :o
Looks good and should make some Hobbit a fine hunting bow... :)
-
Rich: I think maybe you're scale is about 2/3 off! >:D
-
Holy cow, Rich! Just how short is TOO SHORT, for you???!! :o
-
If your disappointed about hitting the hunting weight I can solve that, hunting weight here in Arkansas is 40# if you know what I mean. ;) Beautiful little bow, and a perfect circular tiller for 17.5" draw Ill bet it really slings out an arrow.

That is simply amazing...I really enjoy seeing and reading about your bows... I like short bows for blind hunting...you could hunt out of a hollow log with that one.
Lyle
-
No problem Rich, you can gain a couple pounds by piking it, you've got some extra length don't cha' ;D
-
Nice bend it that little bugger.Well done. :)

I have arrows longer than that thing. I would describe the dimensions in millimetres next time might make you feel better
Great stuff as always.
-
I say sinew back it, pick up a few #'s and a couple inches. Bet you'll enjoy it even more.
I just did a 50" equivalent but it has a knot just past mid-limb. I'm going to do another Osage shorty and sinew back it, but with a clean piece to have all wood working equally and maybe cut length to 46-48". Awesome example, Rich.
-
Way cool Rich.
-
Very nice Rich, but now you got me wanting to build one. Gotta find a tiny Osage stave.
Jon
-
Nicely done, Rich. Now I want to make a conceal carry bow. ;)
-
Thank you for the very nice comments, it is appreciated. All the way back to Dell's comment ya really should know that these little bows are great for bushwackin a deer at 15-20 yds and plenty of power for that purpose......the weakness is in the fact that they are no good if you want a lot of cast (overall downrange distance), at least with hunting weight arrows.
Thanks again for the nice words, just to clarify, these ultra-shorts are fun as all get out to shoot, and with a lot of practice good short range hunters.....they are not much good for other purposes. Personally, I've settled on bows ranging from about 45" to about 49/50 inches as best for me.

What a great bow again, Rich!
I love the f/d pic, absolutely great!
-
You could road hunt out of the pickup window with that baby! (Not that I would personally do such a thing ;) >:D) If anyone could pull it off, it would have to be you Rich! Very cool! Josh
-
Another nice thing about those short bows is that they fit in your quiver along with the arrows ... ;)
-
I just love this thing called primitive archery. Look at the cool stuff you get to see and do.
What a great little bow. I'll pm my address and I'll do the 3 arrow and a flinger in the quiver test for you after it gets here Rich.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!
-
I say leave it as is Rich. 42# is enough to take a deer. Why bother messin with sinew. Way cool!!!
Tattoo Dave
-
I would hunt with it. Heck one of the bows I am using this year is only about a pound heavier. Looks like a sweet little bow.
-
I like it, but would hate to run across a munchkin with one of those!
-
You are the short bow master Rich. It would be cool to have a bow stuffed right into your quiver. It reminds me of those "pocketfisherman" rods and reels they used to advertise the hell out of... Great work.
-
You really are the master of short bows.
Grady

love them shortys, very cool

He'll of a friend you've got there Don! Those Michiganders are like that you know. Just plain down home friendly. Talented too Don. Not only can they grow Michigan corn to rival that grown in IA but...
Some of them
(but I personally only know of one from Rich's neck of the woods because Fred's sittin in greener pastures using bows of solid gold with knocks of pearl)
can start with a baby 35" stave a little after 7am and end up with a powerful short bow by 4 minutes to 4 in the afternoon of the same day.
How about them Michigan apples?
-
Well if force times distance / 12 applies here you are looking at 62 ft lbs of energy there. If it were a normal bow with 28 inch draw you would have 100 ft lbs. Going off th at math, your bow is equal to a 27# bow at 28 inches.
Amazing what a low energy bow can do. If I recal a 30 # bow was used to take buffalo back in the more sophisticated days.
