Post by: kid bow on July 15, 2013, 12:17:20 pm
Would window glass work for knapping or should I avoid it completely

it would work but it's usually too thin to make anything out of.

Depends on how thick it is.  Aquarium glass would but regular wimdow glass is indeed too thin.

I think it varies- I tried it- it shattered when I tried to pressure flake it. Then again I suck at flaking, so that may be the reason. IMO it depends on how it was broken- a point of impact will tend to make cracks in a radial pattern(try shooting a thin piece of glass with a BB gun and flaking the pieces)and it will shatter along the invisible cracks if you try to flake it.

I've made some out of window glass but I don't recommend it, if you want glass to practice on try a glass shop, the may have some scrap 1/4" or thicker that you can have

Older window glass is 3/16 ths to even a 1/4. Older glass was made and tempered differently that to days. I use to check out every old dump I'd come across. The same with bottles older ones knapp like butter. I still pick up any old glass I come across.

1/4" glass tiles from home improvement stores work great, especially if they have some that are broken and can't sell. Glass at the recycle centers as said are also good cheap finds.
