I was at the lake last night with friends and one of the guys started talking about his daughter freaking out because her cell phone was about dead and she didn't have a way of charging it .
Dan works construction and they have a lot of younger workers , Dan said most of them get paranoid if they don't have a place to charge their phones or laptops . I didn't have a cellphone until about five years ago , my job on the turnpike requires me to be close to a phone most of the time especially winter, and I didn't start using the Internet until four years ago. Working on the pike I see people texting and driving all the time , I just don't know how they can be aware of what is going on around them . Dan thinks if you gave the kids today a choice of their right arm or their cell the kids would give up their arm, one of the parents got an app that shuts their daughters phone off at midnight ( you'd think they grounded her for life the way she responded when they mentioned it ) .
While they wher talking about this I was on my phone , Mike looked at me and asked who I was texting , I responded no one , I'm on my two favorite sights looking at bows , Primative Archer and Tradrag , they just laughed at me and went on complaining about cellphones , wonder what they would do if they lost theirs?

Cell phones Texting has become a real pet peve of mine. It has been proven that more accidents and deaths.!!! are caused by distracted drivers, THAN Drunk Drivers. And most of the distraction is from Texting.
And guess what the other day I was driving and this woman was behind me at the stop sign. She kept looking down, as I inched ahead to approach the main drag she quickly looked up lerched ahead and immediately looked down to text and almost hit the rear of my car..!!! >:D >:D >:D
I'm getting sick of it.... >:D >:D >:D >:D

I hate it it when people text and drive its like what in the hell is so important

I collected iPods and kept them from my kids for two weeks last month to insure work around the house got done. It worked like a champ :). They actually played outside and read books more when they had free time and didn't complain or miss the devices. Now that they have them back, they aren't glued to them at all.

What you are witnessing is the death of a society and civilization. People talk more and say less now than any other time. You don't get "Dear John" letters anymore, you get "Dear John" emails. People call each other while they're both in the same supermarket. I was once at a Denny's and the girlfriend phones the boyfriend while he's in the latrine to ask what he wants to drink. Great background noise, I'm sure. Try going on a date and your date is texting constantly. "Oh, I'm sorry, what did you say? I was texting my friend..." I was saying how about I take you home and let's pull the plug on this right now. I can go home and work on my arrows. You go into a public restroom and someone is in a stall talking on the phone. Are you kidding me??? Who wants to hear that background noise? Is there nothing you can do in private anymore? How does that conversation go? "Where you at?" "Oh, I'm sitting here taking a crap. What are you doing?" "Oh, cool, so am I!" C'mon, people! This all makes me wonder if avoiding that nuclear war with the Soviets was such a blessing after all.

We got rear ended by people texting twice in about two months

I love my cell phone as much as anyone and I do text now & then but I don't see the addiction of texting with the kids. For generations, kids have gotten more away from writing of any kind but now choose to text when they could sometimes walk 20 paces and talk directly to the person. But what do I know. I am 56 and still write letters to people. Yes, those pieces of paper with words written or typed. I type most of mine or no one could read them. My writing is not so good.
-
Totally saw a state trooper texting and driving >:D Like any good Turk woud do I pull out my cell phone and take a picture :D
-
I'm a Truck Driver - all local stuff, back and forth to a GM Plant - 10 Miles one way on surface roads. At least once a day, I have someone drift over the centerline into My lane while texting >:(. But My pet peeve is at traffic lights - light changes to green and You can bet that You'll be held up by MORONS with their heads down texting away. It is amazing tho how fast they get moving when You give them the air horn wake up >:D >:D >:D. Bob

When I was about 9 kids in my year started getting phones. I asked them what they do with them and they said make calls and stuff. The next day during break someone was rexting someone in the same room! Im 16 now and only got a phone 7 months ago. And I use it for calls, games (but only when doing things like waiting for the bus) and writing posts on here apart from that im almost always in the workshop making/breaking bows, cutting yew staves, building a canoe. I could easily live without my phone and I need to when I go on camps as I can't charge it.
-
people always ask if I am teaching my son primitive skills like knapping and I often joke that when I figure out a video game that will show him how to do it then we will learn it!
Kids in strollers with movies on Ipads to keep them quiet and entertained so mom and dad can take their time. Kids texting while following mom and dads heels around because they do not like to lift their heads. People look like they are crazy by talking to themselves, cept they are talking to their Bluetooth(see what happens when you don't brush your teeth, they turn blue!) in the car, in nature wherever.... not enough enforcement folks to get them all. All in due time I suppose.

done gone to far nothing we can do sad time we live in

I know it was a typo, but I think you have coined a new word....rexting. But may I suggest we add another letter to the word to make it a bit more clear? "WREXTING" I saw a guy walk into a utility pole the other day while walking down the sidewalk texting. He looked to me for sympathy as blood washed outa his nose. Maybe I am an ass, but I laughed.

hahah I have a phone, but most of the time its not charged or I dunno where it is. My mom gets mad about that- but if I need it I can usually find it(my main use for it is... when mom calls while I am biking or slinging saying DINNERTIME!)
My sister is opposite-she sends several thousand texts a month. Like 8 thousand or so(dad looked at bill, our family has unlimited texting...) I send under 10 a month except if parents text me.

My nephew won't help do anything on the farm always texting or playing games on the computer. JW you wouldn't laugh at something like that.LOL

When my son was a teenager cell phones were in their infancy, I didn't buy him one.
Knowing that these devices are now all consuming to most youngsters, I wonder why parents buy them for their kids in the first place. I wouldn't, then again, I don't own one either.
I do like my PC but have found that when it is on the blink, two weeks away from it and my addiction is gone and I don't care if I have it back or not.

When I was in high school, people would have been embarrassed to wear pants that were dragging and underwear showing. Or hats pulled over the tips of their ears. Even in the army, our BDU pants were baggy by design, but we'd go get some less baggy and do a fold-n-tuck into our jump boots to get rid of the bagginess. I'm not understanding this whole underwear tops or buttcrack showing fad. There's more cracks showing around town than the canyon walls of the whole Grand Canyon. I switched to wearing Wranglers because even the Levis that aren't supposed to be baggy are baggy now.
-
Roy , I work on the Turner turnpike in Oklahoma , it'll be five years on October 6 .
Pappy , I wouldn't consider it that way, kids need to know when to straighten up and act like a decent person and not a clown, they need to learn to respect themselves and others around them and they may not like how some of us try to help them but down the road they will thank us.
-
I think they bring far more good to the world than bad. How many lives have been saved by an instant call to emergency services at scenes of car accidents, fires, medical emergencies and such? How many parents have had their nerves soothed by a quick call from their teenager to tell them that they're just running late and haven't gotten into any trouble?
We are in the middle of a technological revolution, and sure there will be some growing pains. Texting and driving is one of them, but laws are being passed almost everywhere to reduce this, and new tech like built-in bluetooth in vehicles will continue to improve the issues. I think the future is very bright for technology, and I look forward to what it can do for us.
And people are always going to be annoyed with teenagers and the way they act, dress, and carry themselves. That is the natural way of things and will never change, regardless of the times.
-
Well, I can't say too much on how things used to be, I grew up alongside technology as it was booming. I didn't get my own cellphone until after I was 18 though, my own laptop even later. I guess that allows me to value human-to-human interaction more, though I like to text and email and stuff, especially considering my family is all back in the US. But, yesterday was my Ma's birthday and instead of just doing what everyone else does and sending her a message on Facebook, I waited out the 8 hour time difference and called her. Ironically, my Ma is more prone to tech-attachment than I am. And sure enough, she updated her status to share that I had called her. Ah well.
The times, they are a-changin'.
I agree with Slack, though; this is a cultural shift. And in turn, there are some areas that need to be worked out, but the connectivity of the world is immense now. I've had the opportunity to speak to people from all over the globe, via Skype and Facebook. Technology has allowed me to stay connected with distant friends and family and to instantly share stuff with them, makes me feel like I'm still there with them and vice versa. On the flip side, as someone involved with law enforcement, I can say it is immensely irritating with the whole texting and driving thing. I admit that is an unnecessary risk that endangers not only yourself, but others on the roads as well. As Slack said, society is trying to flex and adapt and introduce laws to help alleviate this. But honestly, if it's that dang important, pull over somewhere safe and just make a call. /endrant

i think we should be thankfull of cell phones, can you imagine how many people wouldnt be on here if it wasnt for thier cell phone having an internet connection. I can literally say that if it werent for my cell phone that i would never had started making bow. but i do agree that people are way too attachted to thier phones, my wife probably cease to exist if her phone was not attachted to her hand.
i think i just had an epiphany lol.......... be right back

Nope she's still there lol >:D

I make 90% of my posts from my phone

I never intended to start any arguments , just laughing at how paranoid some people get when they don't have their electronics . Sure cellphones have saved lives , I'm a volunteer firefighter and my phone is how I get a lot of calls ( and our local emergency management service sends texts also) and it is handier than toting a large radio around everywhere , but in the same note people do abuse them by texting and driving ( they just as whel have a few drinks and drive ). A vehicle can and does be considered a dangerous weapon in court especially if you are distracted while driving.
Sorry , just my little rant , you would probably feel the same if you worked out in the kind of traffic as I do ( posted speed limit 75 mph , OHP says average speed is 80 MPH ) , not too many places to run to out on the wall of a buisy four lane road.
Like I said I was just laughing.
-
I agree staying connected is a good thing, but every 30 seconds, come on. ??? Also agree every older generation thinks the one coming up is a bit over the edge
and down right silly, :) but come on butt cracks showing and paints at the knees. :) Enough from me ,just getting old and set in my ways and that ant likely to change so when I am out and see it,I just keep my mouth shut but when they are on my turf it's a whole different story. :)

I hear you Mark when my boys were growing up I didn't allow the saggy pants or sideways hat and I didn't allow they're friends to do it at my house. Like you said it must have worked because I had a hand in raising most of the boys that grew up in my neighborhood during that time and they still come back from time to time. Ron

Because eventually they realize how ridiculous they were ;). But I think being ridiculous and even downright stupid at times is a necessary part of growing up.
I also think cell phones are still new enough that proper etiquette hasn't been established. My generation was really the first one to grow up with cell phones and computers being a part of daily life, and we're only now hitting our mid-twenties and having children of our own. My peers and I will better be able to deal with our children and their technology than my parents generation could because it is so ingrained in our way of thinking that we understand it in a way that older folks just can't.
-
I can see one good thing about someone with their pants down to their knees , if a bear or mad dog is after me all I've got to do is stay ahead of them , should be easy .
With age comes wisdom and a real sence of pride in yourself and what you do , it's in our nature to try and pass it on to the younger generations , and I understand that things change as time goes on but there is a lot to learn about life and each generation contributes their part.
Hope that makes seance , I know I can't get enough stories from when my father was young and wish I had recorded some of the stories from my grandfather , a lot of those stories will be lost over time .
I wish some of what my great grandfather knew was written down somewhere , the things I could have learned from it would be priceless.
-
Poggins I think that would make a great thread there is a lot that woulda coulda shoulda been learned from the old folks that are now gone. I think thats why the old ways of doing things fascinates me. Ron
-
What would be a good title to that topic ?
-
How about wisdom from the elders what have you got to share. Ron
-
Sounds good , or maybe stories from the past.
-
I'm lucky in this deparment. My great grandfather Harold Blaney actually did write some things down before he went. He published a book about it. I have a copy around somewhere. It's called "The Way it Was Back Then: Grampy Remembers". Haven't picked it up in a long time. I'll have to dig it out.

for all of you that complain about texting and driving I would like to invite you to the great city of Chicago and sit in rush hour traffic. the average speed on the highway is about 5 miles per hour. And the funny thing it's not the Youth texting and driving its all the business people. A bunch of suits glued to their phone not paying attention to anything. Traffic has really gotten worse since the cell phone became so prominent. so while the youth are definitely guilty of it I would say adults play equal roll.

Some random thoughts on cell phones - Having grown up in the 80's and 90's, and then going through school to become an electronics technician, you'd think I would be all for keeping up with the latest and greatest technology. But it wasn't until I started dating my wife about 5 years ago that I finally broke down and bought a crappy flip phone, just so she could reach me if she had to. Also figured since someone was depending on me being around, the responsible thing would be to have some way to communicate if I hit the ditch in a snowstorm when it's -40 out. But I always liked the idea of being "unreachable". If someone needed to tell me something important, they could leave a message on my voicemail and I'd get back to them. I'm also a cheap bastard and didn't really like the idea of paying twice, for the phone and internet services that I already had at home.
My wife's days at work have been a little slower as of late, and she finally broke down and bought a smart phone a couple days ago to keep herself occupied. It's been amusing watching how obsessed she is with figuring everything out, downloading all the apps she needs and whatnot. On the bright side, she used to give me crap all the time about how much time I spend online in the evenings, but since she's been glued to that thing, I haven't heard a peep about it >:D
A co-worker was just telling me today that he was hanging out with the parents of his kid's friends after a soccer game. All the parents were upstairs BS'ing, and they noticed the strange lack of noise coming from the basement where 8 teenage girls were hanging out. One of the parents went down to check things out, and all 8 of them had their faces glued to their phones with their thumbs blazing. :)
I looked out the front window the other day and saw some kid cruising down the street on a skateboard, texting away, just oblivious to what was happening around him. Either he was a really good multi-tasker, or he was just asking to be a grease stain on the road.
The times, they are a changin' :)
I suddenly feel really old!
-
LOL, blame it all on the kids and their electronics, while we grown ups sit here and complain about them on our computers on the internet, that grandpap never had.. :) ;) I love it..
-
As a member of the youth I can say I might pick up my cell phone every three days at the most, more often weeks. Drives my parents crazy. On a side note about pants , I did once see a guy with his pants pulled down who's out fit I approved of but I'm not sure of the point, he wore another pair of pants underneath.
-

Ouch!! Hard to argue with that. My wife complains about how much time I spend on forums, Facebook & e mail, under the guise of "catching up on incoming e mails" or "researching products for customers". Trivial things like mowing grass, home repairs, etc. may have to wait a while.
We do all get carried away with our own little obsessions. LOL
