Title: Hot Sticks

A School Teacher acquaintance of mine asked me to come up with something that could
be used as a Teaching Aid by her Herpetology Department at Cy-Fair Highschool to teach about Native Venomous Snakes.

Here is what I came up with.
The only Texas snake missing is the Timber/Canebrake Rattlesnake as it is Threatened in the State of Texas.

The wood is Bodark for the Mocc and Coral, Stained Pecan for the Copper and Diamondback.
finished with 15 coats of CA glue and 8 of Tru-Oil, then Carnuba Wax.

The case is 4-5 ounce leather back/flap and soft Deer tanned leather for the front so's not to scratch up the sticks.
Glued together with Barge Cement, laced with Roo Lace.

I used skins from DOR snakes...

That is just plain one of the coolest educational concepts around!  Freaking cool.  Gonna show that to friends at Reptile Gardens!

Thank You Ed, I like em too, Teacher Lady may have to slam my arm in the car door to get away with em... :)

Thank You Mullet, and Thank You for the offer of Canebreak, but in talking with the Teacher she said she would obtain the needed "Special Educational Permit"
needed to possess the skin in Texas, so that I could add it to the set... that was six months ago and no permit, so I finally said "Heck With It" and finished out the set without it...
I'm too jumpy to keep any Timber/Canebreak around even if I had a Sworn Affidavit saying they were from out of state, without that "Special Educational Permit".
Its a Immediate $500 fine and an invitation for TP&W to go through my house demanding Tags for Long Dead Deer, Turkey and Redfish and who knows what else.

Thank You J.W. I liked the idea for a couple reasons, its perfect for the kids to be able to hold and examine, better than a book I think.
And it gives me a chance to work with snake skins and wood. my first attempt to "Skin" a bow was a failure, so it became clear that Practice was needed... :)
The next set will be Hide Glue and Tru-Oil only, no CA glue.

Gus, I would blame it all on you.  But, hey, I was the one to show my wife your beautiful work.  So, some of the blame falls on me.  My wife is a Montessori teacher and owns her own school.  When I showed these to her, she was like, "can you make something like that for my classroom with KY snakes.  The kids would over them." Then she started envisioning games/activities for matching the sticks to the snake's pictures and on and on.  I guess I'll be driving the roads looking for road kill.  Oh, wait, a silver lining just crossed my sight.  She'll be looking for road kill snakes, also.  I just need to buy her one of those trash picker-upper squeeze clamp thingies.  She grab any snake she sees on the road and toss it in the back of her truck.  More bow backing for me.
