Post by: Pappy on November 12, 2007, 07:18:53 am
Well I finely got it done this week while I was off,in between hunting and working on
some of the other guys bows.It shoot sweet and hard. It is 53@26 and 54 inches N-N.
backed with a carp skin and Buffalo tip overlays. It has 8 coats of tru Oil finish and the 3 more
of Polly urethane. That should seal the Hickory pretty good.Bout time I hope yall like it. :)

Great job! I bet it really spits out the arrows. What do you think about fishskins vs. snakes?

That's a nice one Pappy. I see the lower limb has a bit of twist to it. This is not uncommon with wide limbed bows

WOW, 54" and no string follow! I'm very impressed. I had some buddies shoot a couple 35-40 pound grass carp this year bowfishing. I wish I had saved the skins, those look sharp.

Thanks guys, yes Ryan it is smooth now and is really fast.I put more sealer on it than
normal because of it being Hickory and I plan on being out in the weather a lot with it.
Hickory is hard to keep dry but I think with a little care this one should be fine.I might
nock the shin off before I take it to the woods. It has had about 150 shots put through it and don't seem to be any worse for wear.Marc I didn't notice the limb twist it may be the way I am holding it.I will take another shot and be sure I hold it up straight and see how it looks. It
may twist off a little just hadn't seen it before. :) You have a great eye. :)

Beautiful little bow, Pappy. Those skins really set it off. A quick spray of satin poly will cut the shine. ;)    Pat

Very nice indeed. 54" would make it a good brushy river bottom bow for whitetails. Quite the slender handle. Nice job wit the carp. And got you bookmarked for Nov Self Bow of the Month, of course!

I really like the Carp skins, once again our creativity is inspired. 54" ? How wide is it at midlimb? I like the idea of short brush bows.

Thanks guys I appreshate it.Sidewinder it is 2 inches from the fads to mid limb and the tapered
to 3/8 or less at the tips.White wood I put about 2 inches to start and heat treated the belly. :)
I also recurved the last 3 to 4 inches of the tips. :)

Nice looking bow.   Love the carp skin and the tips look great.  It's amazing what a Hickory flatbow can put up with.  I slapped together a little bow out of scrap pieces for my kids, and tillered it out to my draw length to make sure it wouldn't blow up on them, and it doesn't have any string follow.

Yes if you get it dry and can keep it dry all the way through the tillering process and then
get it sealed good ,with a little care they won't take much set or string follow. The key
is tillering it slow and easy.I usually do it in 3 or 4 sessions. :)I've only had this one out to 27
inches a couple of times because it is for me and I will never draw it that far while shooting.
I tiller them a inch or so more that I plan on them being drawn just to check it out and assure
it is OK. :)
