Title: Holmegaard Osage
Post by: Sasquatch on May 14, 2013, 11:16:40 pm
This is a bow I call it my trash pile bow.  Because I was cutting Osage that I didn't think had a bow in them, and found this piece, and decided to take a chance.  The stave was full of twist, knots and lateral twist.  I had decided to make a bow gust did'nt know what type to make.  Thats when 4dog asked me to make him a bow.  He wanted a Holmegaard  I had never built one.  I gave it a shot and this is what came out.  It took lots of steam bending.   I know the tiller isn't perfect its a little stiff out of the bottom fade but there's a knot there.  I would have liked it to be even width in the working limb.  but one side to the stave was skinny. The bow took 1.5 in set but its still fast to me.  The is 63" long and 1 5/8 " wide at widest.  The lever things are 11 ".  It pulls 52 lbs @27"  mesquite tips.  Let me know if ya got any tips. im still new. this is #14

Awesome job on that stave!   8)  As far as the style, did you mean Møllegabet? Holmegård is more of a pyramid bow style.

Nice job on that knotty stave!  If I'd have seen that in the woods, I'd have passed it by.

Good job!

thanks everybody, I liked building it.  jackcrafty, I am not exactly sure what a holmegaard looks like.  i looked at one in TBB, 2 " bows of the world.  Im not sure about pics but the working limb does taper in width, but i didn't have much to work with.

Cool bow, and yep, this would be a Mollegabet rather than a Holemgaard. Chewed up topic I guess, but worth reminding people of.

Hey, now Im confused about the Holmegaard, when i do a search in PA i get bows that look like mine without the set .  But when i used adb's build along in the "How Too's"  he really does allot of Holmies.  So whats up?  heres an example of what ive seen    http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,4866.0.html

Sasquach, I understand your confusion on this subject.  Years ago, when I had read and reread the TBB's I saw this design called Homegaard.  But, on Paleoplanet Tim Baker and some other noteworthy bowers were talking about the Moly's.  I started a post poising the question of what I see in the TBB's and what was then considered Moly's looked to be the same bow design.  Those in the know stepped up with history in hand and turned that question into a wealth of knowledge for the primitive bowers on that forum.  So when the men here speak of the this style being a Moly it is probably because what was once accepted was corrected with the proper time and location of the archaeological facts.
Hope this sheds light on the subject.

Wow... there's been so many bows over the years... I totally forgot I even made that bow! Nice to see her again. I'm glad to report that's she's still in the hands of her original owner and going strong.  ;D 8)

Christophero, I noticed the same things when doing research on ancient European bows.  Unfortunately, TBB got the names mixed up and this has led to a lot of confusion.

But it doesn't really matter.  Your bow is awesome, Sasquatch.   :)

You are certainly to be commended for pulling off that bow on that piece of wood. I'm a wuss, it would still be sitting in my wait till later pile. Really nice.   Danny

Great bow, I can't fault it.
I love the way that picking out a 'bad' stave brings the best out of the bowyer.
