Hi, new to the site. Love the forums and the magazine.
Was wondering if anyone had a link for a feather burner build along?
Or at least can tell me what's needed to make one without electrocuting
Myself in the process.

I am going to give an old hair dryer a try but ive heard a hot stick from a fire works well to
-
freind made one from toaster elements and his battery charger at 6V. Got it off the net somewhere
Thanks Leroy

Here is one I made out of scrap wood and bolts from my garage. I bought the element from 3rivers.com for $2. I hook a battery charger up to each post and set it on 6 volts. I just used it yesterday.

Nice lookin burner OO. You shoulda been an engineer. Anybody got any of those ribbons they can bring to the Classic? I've got an idea using a computer powersource that I use to etch knives with. It's got 6V and 12V capacity. dpg

That looks like what I had in mind. Thanks outlaw.

I've made the same basic rig OO, works great

That wasn't my invention. I saw some plans online where they used an old model train transformer. I just rednecked it up a little with a battery charger.
Derik, I have heard that piano wire will work instead of the ribbon but I haven't tried it. Maybe Big Jim will have some in his booth at the Classic. We will check it out. I could use another one or two.

You can also use an electric soldering iron for the power source.

the piano wire works good, we had a bunch that we used to get straight lines building gunite pools, just make shure its on 6 volt, wire gets white hot and then blows on 12 v, don't ask how I know ::)

I made one with a lighting dimmer switch wired in. Then you have really fine control over the voltage.

Interesting thread...

I don't burn feathers, but if I did, I have access to plenty of nichrome wire. (the stuff used in sealer/shrinkwrap machines) http://www.mcmaster.com/#nickel-chromium-%28nichrome%29-wire/=mj6ywx (http://www.mcmaster.com/#nickel-chromium-%28nichrome%29-wire/=mj6ywx) <<<<This stuff. We use .036 wire in our sealers. One thing you MUST do is stretch it first. Make yourself a steel rod (1/2" dia) about 8" long with a small hole, big enough for the wire, drilled through the center. Cut a length of wire, clamp one end in a vice, poke the other end through the hole in your "handle" and wrap it around a few times. Now use a wide stance (in case you pull so hard it breaks) and stretch the wire until it feels like it doesn't want to stretch any more. If you don't pre-stretch the wire, it will deform when really hot. Now clip and form!
