Title: Primative rawhide sheath
Post by: Don on April 12, 2013, 08:28:51 pm
 For an obsidian neck knife.
Nothing special just rawhide, natural paint, and a few beads.
The blade I didn't make so won't show that.

Man Don,
just caught this post, that sheath looks like it came right out of a museum. Especially like the lacing and twisted fringe, very nice
rich

How do you do those twisted fringes?

Just wet them, twist, and hold in place till dry.
I've found some leathers hold the twist better then others.

Very fine sheath, even if you don't wanna show the blade.

Looks like a smoothbore and a rifled gun on the rack there.  Can I lean on you to post some pics of the rest of those sulphur belching charcoal burners over in "Around The Campfire"?  You will find that plenty of us are fond of the front-stuffers.

Jeff. Use a dog bone, nice and thick. Put the sheath together wet. Wrap your knife with plastic wrap and put it in the sheath.
You'll have to work at forming it as it drys. But when dry you have a good solid sheath that the knife fits snugly. The paint my not give you much water proofing. I would try maybe pitch vanish after dring and painting.
It's not hard just takes time.

I would be glad to if it don't break any rules.

That's what "around the campfire " is for!  Most on here are quite well rounded in their interrests. As most people with a do-it-yourself  attitude, we all have more hobbies than time ;). I'd love to see them as well.
