but some just sting a little more than others. I had this jewel ready to rock and was working on finding the arrow pass when it popped a splinter. It was a bow for DVS and man did I want him to have it. Sorry man.... :-[
A short memory is the bowyers best friend......next to great hand tools of course!
-
Let's burn it >:D >:D >:D
-
What a beauty, Condolences :(
-
bummer, that one has some nice lines! :'(
-
Been there bro. Just last week actually with my BW bow. It happens. Best thing is to put it in the corner for now if you want to use it for something else like knock overlays, handle laminations, or as BH suggested, firewood ;) .
After the bow is placed in the corner, start right again on a new one and work to ensure a clean back. :)
It was a good looking bow though, bummer. :(
-
Man, too pretty!
-
Bummer Drums. :'( Looked like a sweetie.
-
Too bad. Would you have done something different looking back, or was it just one of those things that a wood bow does that you had no control over?
-
It was just a risky stave from the start Bob. It doesnt have 2" of flat on it anywhere. It wanders all over. I can still make a bow if I wrap it, but not for a gift bow. No way.
-
Oh how well I know that feeling.
-
Bummer,
If I made anything that was that pretty I'd be proud, even if it broke. Sure wouldn't hurt my feelings having a wrapped gift like that ;D
-
That sucks....just happened to me last weekend with a piece of ornamental Yew
-
You already know what I think. Wrap a patch on it and shoot it until it breaks. Maybe find someone with a shorter draw that won't stress it to much. ;) ;) ;)
-
I hate that. Looks like you had put time and effort into that one. I broke two on wednesday - one hickory and one winged elm - snap X 2 - a whole day wasted..... oh well. Rock on.
I have done the patching up thing a couple of times... I doubt I will anymore. If a piece of wood doesn't want to be a bow, I want it in the burn barrel and gone. Too many trees around here for me to sit around lamenting.
-
Thats a nice looking bow. I be worth backing.
-
Roy I considered that. The problem is adding a backing would take away everything that makes that stick good looking. Maybe I will just hand it over to some poor soul at the Classic.
-
Uh man, that's rotten. Especially at that point.
-
That does suck! That thing was looking good too. I had one just like lift a splinter too. I was shooting it and it just let go a bit. Sure does suck though. Like I said, I have been shooting yours and already have a backup plan just in case. Gotta love wood bows.
-
I'd send it to DVS anyway, hell all of his bows have patches on them anyways... :) :P
-
May she rest in peace.
-
Thinking about a "Burning of the Bows" at the Classic. We could all pile up our duds and send them off properly in flames, together!
-
I did that last weekend at home, must have burnt 6 or 8 of em...
-
thats a shame looked like a nice bow :-\
-
How big a splinter are we talking about? What's that saying I see posted here now and then... If there is no pic it didn't happen? If you could slap some rawhide on that one, it sure looks worth salvaging.
-
Come to the Classic and its your Bulldog. Take her home, wrap it or rawhide it and you will have yourself a 50-51 @ 27" bow. Ive fixed worse, but no way is a gift bow leaving with any repairs on it.
-
Yes P/D I feel your pain, yes I really do!could be worse and blew up in the new owners hands though!
-
End of last year I burned all my broken bows and reviewed in my head what I learned from each. It was really a cool little moment and made a warm fire ???
-
That would be a fun Classic event. The Broken Bow Bonfire. Everyone save all your breaks for the year and celebrate with everyone else with a glorious bonfire.
-
I feel your pain man, but you have more wood....theres always more wood!
-
Dont you forget my BT mister!
-
that suck's pearlie, you already know my feelings on repairs and trade bows
-
Sorry to hear it. I found a pretty good buildalong you can follow on your next try.

Bummer man. On the bright side, i guess that's one more for your stash :) :-\ She's a beauty for sure. If you decide you can't stand her, i'll give her a home gladly ;)

p.s. don't read my Humble Pie post.

I think that is a great idea. Folks can stand up and eulogize the bow before committing it to the cleansing fire. The rest of us will watch with heads bowed and toast the bow with a beverage of choice.
Yup, sounds mighty good.
-
And everybody can eat humble smores. It just sounds better than humble pie. So long as the finish on the bows arent toxic....
-
Bummer Chris ! I like the camp fire idea - I have a couple to add to the flames :'(. Bob
-
Just make this better the bow I had for Kris broke today while shooting it in! What a crazy trade this one is. Guess I get to add to the fire at the classic. Burn babies burn.
-
Man! What a bummer! On both bows. Of course, I have little doubt that we'll see both the replacement bows finished and shot in by Sunday night from you guys. As far as the burning of the bows goes, I would have to pull a second trailer to carry all of mine down. :-[ Josh

LMAO.. Here I thought I was the only one who had bows break:) Now all you Bowyers are coming out of the closet with your horror stories:) LOL...
I remember my first bow that blew up on the tree. Thought I was gonna cry, damn near did too. Now when it happens, I just smile and start all over. But when you get one to hold together, and ya get to fling arrows out of that new bow, Well that makes this wood bow building adventure all worth while:)
Pearly Boy and I had our own bow swap this past winter. The first two bows I was making for him blew up. Well with the first one, the bamboo splintered up and the second, the Osage limb just exploded on the tree, I almost cried again, LOL:) But the third time was a charm and I sent him a sweet BBO. Right Pearly Boy?:)
-
Sorry to see that Drums.... that would have been sweet if you pulled it off......... got a batch to keep the fire going myself this year... Not sure why??? guess I was to lucky to long??? Still got a few good ones to show for the effort :)
Roy and here I thought you never lost a bow..... man I'm shattered >:D
Oh well I guess it's ok:)
-
Kip never lost one, just burnt a few:)
