So last summer i harvested some Yew wood and to be honest not all of the pieces were too great. My other yew bow EXPLODED the other day so i decided to make a new one. This piece had a lotta deflex in the handle but the limbs were straight so i wasn't so worried about it. Turned out to make a pretty nice bow. I also got my new 440 lb fish scale so now i have an accurate way of measuring my bows.
Probably somewhere around 60" ntn
70# @ 24"
As you can see it has a few dead patches in the limbs, but Yew's a pretty darn strong wood so i wasn't surprised it held together >:D

Wow, I can not believe that one held together! Nice work on that one
-
Wow! Way cool on that one Kiddo! Looks like a worm or somethin crawling outa that gnarly spot.......
-
Your turning out some super cool primitive bows Zion. This one is full of funky character, love it.
-
Nice bend on that one. Man, you are turning them out!
-
Wow! That is awesome! Love your work Zion, keep them coming. Glad to hear you got an accurate scale. Have you weighed your previous bows to see if the weight was off?
-
Thats cool! proves even crap yew is still bow wood...(by a lot of peoples judgement of yew)

Thanks alot for the kind words guys!
Yeah i might conisder trying to find more of this after making a few bows like this ;D
Yeah i guess its about time i got a good scale lol. It actually was assembled wrong to where the dial was set at 50 lbs so i had to take it apart and tweak it a bit but it's good now. I just came up with a good place to hang it now so today i'll take out the bows i shoot the most and see what they're at. I can draw this one as easy as my other bows tho so it's good to know its at a decent weight.
yeah VMB this was the only one of decent size i have left so i thought why not. I don't like throwing stuff away anyway, bows can be made out of a lot more 'junk' than people think ;)

Sometimes your bows scare me lol. im most certain that i would have broken that one! nice job on keeping it together! Very nice bow
-
That is a great looking bow zion! Nice character and plenty of weight. You make 70 lbs look pretty easy :o. My shoulder gets sore shootin a 60 pounder nowadays but I aint as good as I once was. Just out of curiosity why do you make your bows so heavy? It just seems to me that you would enjoy them much more at 50-60 pounds.

That sure is a beast of a bow. Very cool. Nice tillering too.
Hamish.

Another beauty, Zion. Well done. 8)

Wow that thing is a work of art, only thing left to do to it is take it down about 20# and send it my way. >:D

That is a character bow +++. Wow
-
Wow that's a good one for sure.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys i appreciate it!
haha Muffin yeah after my last yew bow exploded i was kinda wondering how this one made it through. Kinda crazy how Yew bows go off, like a nuclear bomb. and in 8 pieces with no warning ;D
Thanks Okie, well when i first started shooting i always wanted to shoot heavier bows, not cuz i felt like a wimp or anything like that, i just like drawing these kinds of weights and i guess i like how they shoot. But i also enjoy shooting the 60# bows if they're a good design, usually i have an easier time making heavier bows shoot better tho.
Thanks Hamish, the tillering was a little tricky at first with all the deflex at the handle but it seemed to even itself out ok. Still isn't perfect, but the shooting decides for me lol.
Thanks Pat!
Thanks Autologus, either that or ya start lifting lol ;D ;D
Thanks Zinger, yeah it is pretty gnarly lookin huh ;D
Thanks Victor, yeah it's a little out of the ordinary for me. I've been lucky with the yew i've got, it could either be an art piece or a bow!
-
you sure it was a nuke? i think us being 100 or so miles away from each other i would have felt or seen it right? when did you choose to lite one?
-
cool bow, really, something orcish about it. 8)
-
its the deflexed handle that makes it orcish in my opinion. they had metal bows with deflex in the handle.
-
yeah, probably, and also the relatively massive limbs hat come with the deflex and the draw weight.
-
Nice job, Zion. That yew must be good stuff!!
-
Dang Zion you're on fire!!!!!
What a cool bow, I love it!!!!!!!
-
Yeah i guess it does look pretty orcish huh? It doesn't creeaaaak when i draw it tho LOL
Muffin i lit the nuke 'cuz i felt like it 8)
yeah Lesken this yew seems to be pretty dense actually. The only thing i don't like about the pieces i got is that there's dead patches going halfway through the limb (scary). I guess with just a little bit of yew a bow can be made tho.
thanks Coaster, glad ya like it!

Well done young man. You are turning into quite the artist.
-
Nicely done with a very iffy stave.
I think that deflex probably was a blessing in keeping the stresses down.

Wow Zion,
Another awesome bow out of a gnarly piece of wood! That is too cool! I love your bows! I visited your little town this week, beautiful over there, and sunny! All the inspiration a boy needs to build bows! Keep em coming! Dale

Thanks Gordon, Del, Dale. Yeah the deflex probably did help. It has great string tension tho. Lol thanks Dale, now its all rainy :'(
