Title: rock art
Post by: bowtarist on April 04, 2013, 11:56:44 pm
Every since coming back from the Classic last year I've had the family more aware of the "cave man, oooga booga life style".  My boy Silas started this project a couple of days ago. Taking red red sand stone creek rock and smashing it down into dust.  Once I started helping, things picked up and I taught him to use his head.  Not to smash rocks, but to think.  We got an old "copper" salt shacker from the sand box and put the smashed rock in and sifted it, then we smashed the sifted stuff some more, then I got an old diner salt shacker from goodwill today for $.49 and we took four layers of door screen and put it under lid, then sifted it again.  Found a coconut shell in the compost and mixed our sift with some creek water.  I used a stick, Silas found a chicken feather.  We draw in the dust on our cars all the time and have done other rock paintings, but I really like this one he made.  Thanks for lookin! dpgratz

Not being fond of modern art, myself, this work from this young and upcoming artist appeals to me deeply.

When is his next gallery opening?  Will you be serving red or white Koolaid?  Both?

I think the portrait of his father that is lying on the table is very accurate, very accurate indeed!

Nice work there Silas.  The lines of the archer are absolutely awesome.  It shows tention and fluidity at the same time.  I love it.

That is cool.  From where he placed the arrows in the animal I think he must have been watching you shoot Derik.

Great art, Silas!  Your work reminds me of the petroglyphs from the southwest (Barrier Canyon, Freemont, Puebloun, ...).  You may want to look at some of the art from Lascaux and Chevet in France and Altamira in Spain.  Keep up the good work!

yep! great job!
childrens drawings are the best...you might consider spraying a fixative over them to keep it from smearing.
everytime my grandsons visit we put clay slip on one of their feet and hoist them up so they now have a trail going accross the ceiling
in my workshop starting from their tiny baby foot...      but for now they are still small enough to hoist!

Thanks for the replies y'all.  Silas didn't know I was going to post the pics, when he saw the post and replies and how many had looked @ the post he was grinnin ear to ear.  He went out and started making more.  If he get another gooder, I may post it as well.

Outlaw, you made me crack up out load in class when I read your reply.  That's how they used to do it.  Look @ some of the cave paintings with hunting scenes being portrayed.  I hear the Eskimos do it that way with polar bear too.  Remember that post on arrows a while back, had that guy standing by the bear with a bunch of arrows sticking out of it's rump?

Scowler, We check out rock art from all over the world, one of our families favorite art styles.  We try to draw our own on the dust of our cars all the time.

Thanks again guys, it made Silas's day to see his work on the internet and have people reply about it.  Cheers, dpgratz
