This was my first attempt at the gemsbok horn bow, 50lbs at 28
Mahogany and Zebrawood riser.
-
Here's a close up of the riser
-
Whole horn? Looks pretty sweet!
How did you tiller that?
-
I used a 5" inflatable drum sander on my grinder to evenly taper it. It started at about 95lbs
-
I want to see that thing drawn! I thought those were oryx horns. I didn't recognize the name you called it, "gemsbok." I guess that's Afrikaans?
-
Pretty cool looking bow. You do realize you are required to post a full draw pic at least if not more. ;) How does she shoot?
-
More pics! More pics! More pics! :)
But seriously. More pics >:(
-
Interesting. I remember years back a guy was building these and filling them with bowgrip epoxy.
More pics ;D
-
Thanks! I'm currently post op from a shoulder repair otherwise I would love to get a pic of full draw. Before the surgery I was able to fix the top limb which was stacking, after that my shelf was a little shallow deflecting the arrow to the left. So deepened the shelf to center and she shot perfect for me at 20yds. Now I just get to look at it :(
-
I will get someone to draw it for me. then ill post the pics hopefully by this weekend
-
Sorry to hear about your shoulder. That blows! build a cool bow like that and cant shoot it! The misery >:D
-
Yep, I won't even be able to fly fish for about 4 months. Ill use this time to do some researching and planning for future projects
-
That's a unique bow. Beautiful and very primitive looking.
Can you please get a buddy to draw it to full draw and post a pic?
Thank you for entering your bow in the March BOM contest! It is much appreciated. Best of luck with your bow.

Thank's, I'm pretty new to the Bowyer trade and this was a good experience with some good trial and error lessons. I mostly carve bone, wood and jade and blade-smith. I'm hoping once I recover I can incorporate my carving ability and inlay work into a Bow.
-
Send it to me, I will get you a full draw pic :D I would send it back of course...
-
I'm having an easter party Saturday should be able to get one of my 2 brothers to give it a try :)
-
Those bows have to be the coolest ever, cant wait to see a draw........ :D :D
-
Heck yes, that's the business man! Looks like Odysseus' bow from the 80's movie only cooler, nice riser work too, get well man. :D
-
Thanks, that movie was what first inspired me to take up archery :)
-
Gemsbok means "Gems Buck" in Afrikaans. The Oryx has what appears to be a diamond (gem) on its forehead, hence the name.
-
Full draw sounds nice but I'd like to see some more pics of the details on the bow. That is cool as it can be.

Ditto that, but we do need a full draw pic to enter it in BOM :)

Good looking Horn Bow...
Have one in the works myself.
Finally found the Right set of Horns.
Still looking for the Right hunk of wood for the Riser.
Like the way you cleaned up the Horn Transitions with leather...

Thanks, here is a pic @ full draw by my helpful father :)
-
looks great!!!!!
-
That is incredible! Now you've got to make some arrows with ostrich fletchings and horn arrowhead to go with it!
-
How did you attach the horn to the riser?
-
Ostrich fletched arrows would suit it perfect (I had made a nice turkey fletched bamboo shaft with stone point, then one of my pups got ahold of it) For the riser I had to shape the ends to match the inside of the horn as close as possible. The riser extends into each horn about 4inches
-
Thanks, here is a pic @ full draw by my helpful father :)
Now we're cooking with peanut oil ;D
And now you're in the March BOM.

Thanks, I wish I could have drawn it, but I can not even pull my sons 12# recurve
-
THAT is one COOL BOW!!!!!

-
Man I love it.
I hope to do one someday.
Where did you get the horns?
-
They were given to me by a friend in west Florida
-
Now that's something you don't see everyday. Very cool!
-
Wonderful! I so want to try this.
Don't know if I missed the info, but what is the total bow length tip to tip?
-
I have an all-consuming fantasy of building one of these bows!
First, I travel to Africa with just my bow making tools and head for the bush. Once in the bush I make a serviceable bow and a set of arrows to hunt with. Tune the arrows to the bow and when it shoots well enough to be an ethical hunt, I find my waterhole and build a brush blind. From that blind I bide my time patiently until I get the "just right" set of horns to come in. Slowly I pull full draw and send the arrow home. The beautiful female gemsbock's heart is roasted over a kindling fire as the guide service begins the process of parcelling out the bush meat for the local tribe that hosted me. Wiping the grease from my chin and hands, I gather up the horns and my memories and head home to build my gemsbok bow!
Why the female gemsbok? Longer and narrower horns, more graceful looking since the bucks wear them down.
Yup, that's my fantasy hunt. Thanks Primalartz for feeding and nurturing my dreams!
-
That would be one epic hunt , you could propose it to discovery channel see if they would sponsor it :)
I was inspired by the old Odyssey movie, and when a friend of mine asked if I could use the horns for anything I jumped on it. I'm really hoping to use this for the next season.

wow nice bow. i wan't to try horn and sinew but im way to inexperienced. how do you tiller a bow like that? SS
-
I definitely want to hear more on how this was done.
That bow is AWESOME.
-
What bow and construction.First I've seen on this site in the last two years at least. Thanks for sharing. That is truly a HORN BOW.I've made a few with wood cores and sinew and found for tillering that 80 grit paper worked about the best for reduction of poundage.Good to see your will found away.Love to just shoot it once. That one should be able to be passed down to your grand childrens' grand children.
-
Never thought of doing a bow that way. Love the ingenuity!!
Had shoulder surgery March of 2012 and back to shooting about 50#. It is a long road but you will make it.
