The lighter the arrow, the faster my bows shoot.  That's my secret.  Don't tell anyone.  ;)

Does the set have to have been made with primitive tools, or no steel?

I may be in if you count a linen string.  Gotta ask, are you shooting arrows with field points or have you just fire hardened a wood point, whatcha got?

I'm interested in this discussion. Can we define some areas though? Like points, glues, finishes?

If there are no objections, here are the rules:

Tools and Materials: you can make the set with any tools you want and you can get the materials anywhere you can (hardware store boards, dowels, etc. are OK)
Glues: hide glue, fish glue, bone glue, and/or pitch glue.
Finishes:  pure linseed oil, pure tung oil, pure animal fat, PatB pine varnish, pure beeswax, pure canauba wax, pure lanolin, and/or pure shellac.
Strings:  rawhide, sinew, pure flax (linen), sisal/agave, dogbane, milkweed, cotton, silk, thistle, or any other natural fibers.  No man-made fibers of any type. Machine made threads, twines, or cords are OK as long as the fibers are natural.
Arrowheads: wood, bone, stone, obsidian, antler, ivory, gar scales, or shell.  No glass or metal.
Paints:  must be all natural including the pigments.  Paints can have oil, pitch, hide glue, protein, or wax binders.  Egg paint is OK.  Milk paint is OK.  You can purchase the paints from a retailer as long as the ingredients are all natural.
Quivers: brain tan, chamois, oil-tan, bark tan, or rawhide.  No chrome tan.  Basket, tree bark, wood, or woven natural fiber quivers are OK too.

I think thoses rules look,,  I will make  a bow just for this,, I always thought it was cool to hunt the same woods with bows and arrows that the native people used,, I am going to make some new strings,,i use squrriel  hide,,  have heard ground hog makes good ones  but never tried,,

I added more options to the quiver rule to include basket weave and other non-leather materials.

I got a bow and string already made up, but I'm wondering about arrow points. Won't there be some issues with points getting stuck in targets? Or will we be stump shooting?

Also, my kit won't be a replica of any certain tribe, so let me know if that's an issue.

The kit can be ANY design, so that's not an issue.

If points get stuck in a target that means you didn't try them at home first.  Make the points narrow, without barbs and you should be fine.  I don't think we will be stump shooting. ?

Hmm, this sounds like fun!  Like Pappy, I'll have to work on a string.  Never did one.  Guess there's no better time to find out how. :)

I'll shoot.  Got to work on a string.  Already have all natural arrows and self-bow.  Arrows are river cane with fire-hardened dogwood shoot and two-feather eastern woodland fletch.  Hopefully, I'll have another bow by the classic.

Alright, here's what I came up with so far. Osage bow, natural cordage string, and cane 2 fletch arrows with antler points. Still need to make a quiver of some kind.

After shooting the arrows I realize they are plenty noisy. I spoke with Gun doc and he said I could crop them a bit and/or turn the fletch so the under side is out. Other than the fluflu effect I'm very pleased with this kit.

scott-thats some fine looking abo gear.
what material did ya make the string from?

I have flax stalks that I rough process to make linen Flemish strings. I would prefer using nettle, but the weather hasn't cooperated for a couple years and I haven't collected any of my primo creek bottom "itch weed".  The linen is fine as a substitute.  ::)

Here's the link to the build along.

Guys, If anyone need it, I can make rawhide bowstrings, cow rawhide.
I do love having friends.... i need to know- Length of string, strength of bow, etc.
They are not served.. but I can serve them.
Rawhide makes a durable string, but they are a bit thick.
I tried a rawhide string on my fiberglass recurve, just to prove they work... 50 pounds draw. Works great, minus 1 thing- it streches a bit much.
However, KEEP THEM DRY!!!!!!!
-Squirrel
Also, it takes a while...
I am young and am in an AP class. Lotsa schoolwork, but I make time.

I have been cutting osage last two weeks and getting behind on my arrows

I also like sisal for strings, but pulling the 2 foot long fibers from cordage is hard to do. but it makes very, very strong strings with NO strech.

This sounds like a great motivation to do my first fully natural/primitive bow and arrow.  Not sure if I'll get it done prior to the classic but I'll try.  The glue and points will be new to me.  I'll get to work on a bow and arrow while I read up on glue.  I'd like to try to do it from material I gather up here in the Pittsburgh area as much as possible.  Thanks for the challenge!   :)

Here's the set I'm bringing to the classic:

Osage Bow,  50" NtoN, 43# @ 24"  Hemp string (I'm going to make a sinew string for this time permitting)
Osage Arrows 25" long, 430 grains each, pheasant wing fletching, blunt tips
Chamois leather quiver and bow case.

Inspired by Osage Indian designs.  :)

Bow is looking good Osagejack!

Patrick, really fantastic looking set!  Wow!  Is there anything holding the structure in place in the quiver or is it all leather?
Title: Re: Primitive Archery Set
Post by: JackCrafty on April 08, 2013, 10:14:06 pm
Rob, there is no support structure inside the quiver.  It's all soft leather held together by leather lacing.
