hi all got this tillered out the other day. its a piece of privet i cut about a month or so ago. i had it in the house where it was warm to dry it. it has turned out good. its pulling 55# @26" there is a kink halfway down the bow so i laid the handle out there. the crown was very high on the left limb near the fades so i had some problems with the tiller. and i know it isnt perfect. this has been the most challenging stave for me so far. i think i will leave it primitive looking. there are still some tool marks and things but i quite like them on this bow. i may stain it though as its abit bright lol. overall im pleased how its turned out and it spits an arrow pretty fast. i will put a green jute handle wrap on when i get time to go and buy some. the bow is 59" NTN heres a few pics.

Looks like a well made bow. Good job.
-
cheers jon, i forgot to say before this bow was only drawing around 40# at 26" until the recurves went in. i also toasted the belly and i could really tell the difference as it stiffened the bow up loads.

Nice job Danny. Keep seeing a few Privet bows here and there. This ones a dandy.
-
Forgot to say that I wouldn't stain it. Several coats of tru-oil would really make that wood look nice.
-
Looks pretty good to me. Nice job!

Never heard of Privet but that looks like a sweet shooter!!
-
that is down right sexy. i love this bow, the tiller looks good to me.
-
Looks nice! Always wanted to try Privet.
-
Nice work. Privet grows like a weed around here and it often produces nice straight shoots. Might have to do some trimming.

Looks good and a nice tillering job. Was this taken from a large privet "bush"? We have privet around here - it is used as a kind of a border or privacy row of bushes. Doesn't get that big here. Just curious.
-
cheers everyone. yeh privet is used over here alot for hedge rows. in the full draw pics the hedge behind me is privet but i keep it well clipped so it is no good for bows lol. the piece of wood for this came from a privet near me thats been left to grow wild. so it had grown pretty tall. and straight. the more you clip privet the thicker and bushier they get.
-
Sweet looking bow, very nice job. :)

thanks for the comments everyone. i decided to stain the bow i didnt like how pale it looked. i also wrapped a jute string handle on with a thick leather arrow pass. and finished it with danish oil. im pleased how it looks.i think it looks very primitive. i could imagine a caveman walking round with this one lol. heres a few more pics.

Although we’ve tried many many woods , never tried Privet ... Thing is , it’s a nuisance around here , growing wild EVERYWHERE ... We’ll have to go hack some down (harvest) immediately !!! Thanks !!! I’d have never thought of this ... :o
-
Looks great! Got about a dozen or so havested last summer and cant wait to try it. Looks like it doesn't take much to make a good weight.
-
cheers everyone. i have another piece of the same stave so i will defo be making another. its seems a pretty hard wood to me. i wouldnt like to try chasing a ring with it though as the grain is very hard to see. its almost none existant.
-
Privet as bow wood??? Who would have thunk it....
Now we can get our staves and arrow shoots at the same place.
One stop shopping. ;D

nice bow, I cut some privet 2 or 3 weeks ago, ruffed it out down to about floor tiller yesterday, it's been in the hi 60's low 70's here figure I'll wait a few more weeks and see how she goes, strapped it down to a board to keep it from getting real wonky

Bows like this are one of the things that make this site so cool. Have'nt seen many if any privets posted so that sure opens it up for other guys to try. Nice job. Danny
