The second picture is of the group of bows we are working on.

That looks like a lot of fun. Those are some great lloking staves, especially the one on the right. I'd love tomsee that one when it's done.

Looking good! Bow night is Tuesday's at my place. Had a lady join last week. Its very rewarding. Good on ya John.
-
Very cool John :)
-
Hey Will did you see the stave on the right that was from you two years ago.
@ Adam you and me both on seeing it finished. I have been chicken to work on it for the past year. I was hoping my bow building skills would catch up to the difficulty level of that stave.
@ Matt hmmmm may have to crash your tuesday night sometime one of these summers.
-
Good for you Ioawbow. Thats the way to pass it on. Our group bow night is every other Friday as I live away from the city and the guys I have coming out live there and can't get away as often. I'm thinking the one on the right will be crazy good if you can pull it off. Danny

just wanted to say thanks again for gettin me started on a different stave, since the bow that i almost had done cracked that dam crackhore. Your a hell of a bow maker. I still like the one you just done Sunday ee ya this Sunday. Thanks again, Paul
-
Lol yep that stave was trouble from the start. Anyway we really made some progress on the new one and it should make a fine bow. It never blew up but it is better to be safe than sorry ya never know about those edge cracks. Besides the woods are full of osage. One day in the future we all will tiller it out and see what happens. I just did not want you to blow up your first bow. I bet we get her done on sunday.
I should have jw's done on sunday also....no pictures so jw cant peek.
And you are welcome ..helping the new guy build his first bow is just as fun as making your own.

I'd consider myself blessed to get a bucket of iowabow's sweepings off his shop floor and be pleased to pay the shipping. For that matter, I'll drive over to pick up that bow so we can get some pics shooting it in your yard! See you in May!

Also going to teach them how to split a log

Good times and bad but its all about learning. We had a bow fail after heating it to align the string. I called Will to figure out what happened and because of winter the mositure in the bow was low so it seperated with a crack horizonal to the limb. I wanted to share this with others because I never saw this before. What we should have done was wait a couple if days before we pulled it to allow the stave to rehydrate. Live and learn but hate to see it in a new bow at had a great tiller.
Now for the good ....Paul's stave is looking great and should make a nice bow.
Tom's bow is done and got it first shoots yesterday!
So good times on sunday here in Iowa!!!!
Also Scott stopped in as he was passing through.
Annette made us all lunch had it was great!
-
You boys are havin' way too much fun
Pretty slick to get that pic of the arrow going through the chrono'
I hope you tidied up afterwards :-* ;)

That was fun, John. Glad I got the chance to stop in and mess things up for ya. >:D ;D
That's a cool shot with the chrono, but looks like the limbs are off balance somehow. Never seen that before...
Tell Annette lunch was GREAT (and the real reason I swung by. ::) )
Let's do this again in a few weeks want to?!?

Scott
That's probably just an artefact of the frame scan in the digital camera...
I've seen weird stuff like that when grabbing a frame from video too. I think it shows up on vertical lines most, which is why the arrow looks ok.
I've seen pics where the string shows up as a huge S shape.
Del
PS.
Ooooh just noticed that old style vice (vise) in the penultimate shot... that's really cool.
-
Not sure about messing things up?
Just kinda running things like twin oaks with Gary Davis where we all have one idea about a particular design so they learn one method together and learn from each other in the process. Kinda like having parents on the same page so the kids dont get mixed mesages. Next time we need time to be on the same page for the student. We need to pick one design for them all to work with because if their bow fails then they can see how the process worked correctly with the other student that shared the same design. This helps them see where they went wrong and where it went right with others in the class. It is very good to have help and it was appreciated.
As far a the chrono well it is the wonder of the modern camera ...can't always believe what you
see Scott. Look at the string on the bottom limb it appears two be cut in to and broke! Kinda a fun picture.

Oh man! Now I'm not only jealous but hungry too! :-\

I have never used that vise before this event. I dont even remember where I bought it but have hauled it around for 30 years and three different states. I was cleaning the basement last month and saw it and though it would make a nice bow vise.
-
I wish that I lived a little closer John. I really enjoyed the last time you did this. Maybe I'll be in the neighborhood again sometime and can help out a little. Josh
-
sunday was a long day. But learned alot more than one way to make a bowthats for sure just like everything else you put two guys together that do the same thing you get two different ways of doing things, Inice to put a face with the voice Scott seems like a heck of a nice guy. Your wife is a great cook and your son is a nice young man. Looing forward to gettin mine done I want to shoot it. Paul
-
Nice meeting you too Paul. You guys got a nice group started there. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Scott

Felt real bad for steve on that crack so today I knocked out a stave for him and I should get the belly for yet another bow. This one is Cleeeeeeeeeaaaaaan! No school due to snow and I could not run the band saw so just hit with glue a stuck it in the house.
-
I think he will like that stave, it looks like its nice has some nice waves to it
-
Paul came over and helped me run steve's stave through the saw. He should be set by Sat. Steve's bow is in Paul's left hand and my new lever bow is in his right. The guy with the grey hair is me.
-
They should make nice bows. Steve is going to be happy he is that close to tiller shouldn't take long. Happy to be able to help you like that John its the leasr I can do for you showing &helping me with mine. Paul
-
Looks like a lot of fun! Yeah that chrono shot is real interesting. The bottom limb is back to brace but the top is still movin and the string is loose and flacid. Very cool,
-
Sat. Looks like it is going to be a lot of fun ...Tim, Cody, and Leroy maybe, are coming over (guys from first bow class). Paul, Tom, and Steve will be making some final building on their first working bows. We are possibly going to get a visit from Gun Doc and Beadman. It's going to be a real great time. I think the weather should be nice enough to shoot some bows. I am really looking forward to the weekend. So our band will be 9 anyone else what to come?
-
Forgot to say that snaky bow is going to get some attention also.
-
sounds like a bussy day you have planed as far as work and play going on sat. im one of the lucky guys that only live 10mins. away darn the luck hope to get that bow done and see if i can hit air if not a target lol see you sat Paul
-
Here are a couple picks from the day. Paul finished tillering his wonderful bow.
-
We showed the group how to split logs. Also Josh shot his hackberry bow for the first time...man is that bow light. I blew up the snaky bow at 20inches and it had a perfect tiller going.
-
You bunch of guys are just having too much fun! Sorry to hear about the snakey bow. I was lookin forward to seein that thing.
