Just curious if Y'all is interested in doing this again this year...and if anyone is coordinating it? If not I wood be more than willing to help organize, monitor, and keep track of things. I'm on here all day everyday so why not? ...lol  it wood be nice to have some help from a moderator or two as well(but they don't need to participate in the trade, just help run and keep things in line).
Anyone got any answers or know if its in the works yet?
-
I wish I was a little farther along into bow making. I'd love to participate but I'm still on my first bow. I doubt anybody wants somebodies 2 bow attempt ever, haha. I did enjoy looking at all the gifts during the Christmas holidays though.
-
Hawkster: Hey, I'd be in on the trade. Can't give the time to organize, though. :( Have a bit going on that I'll mention to you at Marty's.
Marks: The beauty of this trade is that all levels of bowyerdom are welcome. We encourage especially the novices to join in. It drives yourselves to success and you get ALOT of help doing it. The idea on this PA trade isn't so much who can make the best or prettiest bow. It's to share and be in receipt of a piece of someone heart and sole, no matter what the level of expertise. You would be most welcome to participate.

I'm interested
-
I am also new to bow building, but I am interested.
-
I'm interrested as well.
-
I'm in!
-
glad to see someone talking about this-
july is rolling right up on us!
it always seems to take me the entire duration to get a bow shipped.....
but i have a head start this year.
already got a ring chased on a nice old piece of osage in anticipation...
now all i need are the specs and i can roll with it
love the bow trade-it really does challenge me to be thoughtful and attempt the best bow ive made yet
-
Chris, I will help out but won't join in on this years trade. I have 4 or so bows to build for folks so I just don't have time. I'm not getting in any bow trades this year ...at least not til I get cought up but I will do whatever I can to help out.
Mark, like Matt said these bow trades are to help encourage new builders to try to go out of their comfort zone and learn new techniques. If you put your best effort into the bow you send your recipient he(or she) will be pleased to recieve it. Read back over the PA Bow Trades from the last few years and you will see lots of newbies at the beginning and more accomplished bowyers toward the end. It is a great learning tool.

the bow i received last yr was the fellas 2nd bow. its a sweet shooter and i am proud to have it in my arsenal.
this will be my third bow trade. the first year the bow i sent was only my 6th ever. last year, bubby got my 11th completed bow, so....
just jump right in-its all about the making
-
Well I may get in on it next year but I still want to make sure I'm not gonna kill myself with this first bow before I get in on some trading >:D. I do look forward to seeing everybodies work again. I'm also waiting on my other osage staves to season. We will see how it goes but at the moment I'm out for this year. And I want to thank yall for the encouragement. That is my favorite thing about this forum. Everyone brings you up and no one pulls you down.
-
I'd like to give it a try if there's still interest.
-
i'm in! if theres something that needs doing i would be more than happy to help out with the trade.
-
Let's go boys! Sorry, and Girls!!

I think you have the right attitude. Skill level and time in the saddle means squat when it comes to building a bow that can be shot safely. If you dont trust your tillering/bows then its a good idea to do what your doing. Wait a year. Its true we are all at different levels, but the bow should be safe and should be able to be drawn and braced.
-
I'm in. I skipped the last three because my confidence level was low but now I'm sure i can put something out that I'll be proud of. I think thats why some of the new guys are a little hesitant about joining in.
-
sure, lets do one! i was wondering when you were going to ask ::)
-
Well...since no one else has made the effort to start and head this up,ill be taking it on this year...I've been in contact with pat and he's gonna help out.....Pearl drums also has contacted me wanting to assist.
I love the bow trade, and can't wait to get the ball rolling....as soon as the members helping out all come to an agreement on the terms and boundaries I will start the official sign up thread with all the rules n such...THIS THREAD IS NOT THE SIGN UP FOR THE TRADE
Whooo-hoooo!!!!!! Lets get this baby started ;)
-
SWEET! sounds good to me! have a couple staves id like to try my hands at ;D
-
Thanks for getting it rolling blackhawk. I was starting to think there wasnt going to be one this year and i have been looking forward to it since the last one ended.
-
cool this will give a good 6 mos to get a bow out the door, Bub
-
I am interested as well.
Grady
-
i might have to sit this one out. :-\
-
i have a bow project for trade. i made a bow but the two tips broke. it has a pine and mahoghany risor not sure about the length. anyone want to turn this into a short bow? ill take any offers for it. PM me if your interested
-
you should probably move that post to the trade forum, this is where we make bows for our recipient and send it out, then we get one from another person who made one for us.
-
It's like secret Santa but without the Santa.
Grady
-
oh so say there is person A, B and C. person A makes a bow for B, B makes a bow for C and C might make one for A?
-
Count me in! I got a head start this year and a pile of partially finished bows of every size and weight and wood type (except osage - if I did have osage I'd keep it for myself). Someone will be getting some of our fine NW woods.
C'mon Pinecone, you can't sit this one out. That decreases my chances of winning the Bryce lottery and gettin an awesome Pinecone bow.
I won the Keenan lottery last year (awesome bow). Oh well, there are so many great bowyers on here I'd be very happy getting anyone's fine craftsmanship.
-
oh forgot to mention count me in!
-
like blackhawk said, this isnt the thread to sign up at, keep your eyes pealed on the bow forum for when they do create the signup page.
-
i agree with you about all the fine bowyers on this website, the thing about this trade as stated before, it challenges bowyers to do their best, so they can ship out a bow that they really worked hard to make, and maybe was something completely new to them, many things that you may not have tried is, different bow wood, recurving, heat treating, character stave, different design, different weight, artwork, stains, primitive made, ect. this would be a trade to try something brand new to you, something that would be possible, but you may be unsure of your skill at. Thats what will make it fun! because you have a challenge that may overcome you, or you could overcome it! sounds like fun to me
-
It sounds like fun... because it is ;) good Anya blackhawk way to take the reigns!
-
Alright!!!! I have been wondering if we would do another . I would do it again ;D
-
Good on ya, Hawkster, Drums and thanks again Pat. Looking forward to signing in.
-
Alright guys....sorry I haven't been chiming in a whole lot here and responding to everyone....I've been busy with pms ....as of right now im forming a commitee and discussing details and ideas to get parameters set...as soon as we have all come up with a general consensus of things ill post the sign up thread with rules...this might take a couple days to compile it all so please be patient with me...its not a small undertaking...and all involved are volunteering our free time to make it happen....thanks guys...can't wait to get this going so I can stop typing and get some tools n a piece of wood in my hands ;)
So far Pat,Keenan,Pearl Drums,Coaster500,and myself have volunteered to assist in this.
Thanks again guys...this couldn't be done without all the fine members here :).....Chris.
-
Alright guys....sorry I haven't been chiming in a whole lot here and responding to everyone....I've been busy with pms ....<snip>
I hear a lot of guys get into bow making because of that issue. >:D >:D >:D
-
Your one fart smeller there Onebow! Funny, funny!
-
I'll help with the Policing if needed, see if we can do better than last year. I'm like Pat this year, real busy at work and need to finish 4 bows by the Spring, so I won't be in it.
I think that one of the rules should be , If you see where you might have problems fulfilling your obligation let everyone involved know ahead of time. Don't just quit answering PM's and emails. A lot of people do worry about each other on this site and when you do that most of us start thinking you have a family crisis, you're sick, or the worse, you've passed away and nobody knows it.
Usually the first thought everybody thinks is not that you are ripping someone off, but, that you are having a serious problem.I've never seen a more trusting, giving group on a website.
So, I'd like to suggest that if you join this trade, just be considerate of your recipiant and the rest of the members.
-
Thanks for wanting to be the "bad cop" Eddie ;)...good points...and open communication will be typed in bold and very emphasized, and a requirement if one so chooses to sign up.
If anyone that was involved in the previous trades has any constructive criticism feel free to post that here in this tread, and it can be discussed here, and possibly taken into consideration if deemed a good idea by the commitee.....but remember we are trying to keep this as simple as possible, and are relying on the trust and integrity of those who sign up...that's what makes this a success
-
Count me in!
-
I became a PA member during early summer last year, too late for the trade. I'm in on this one.
-
One of the most important parts of this swap in my eyes is each of us being honest with ourselves. Entering this bow swap means you should be able to build a SAFE and SERVICEABLE bow in the draw weight and draw range of the person you drew. The rest can and will vary as much as the person buidling it. The number of years building or bows made isnt a concern as its irrelevant. And never hesitate to ask questions along the way. We all want everybody to get a good, shootable bow in the end. ;D
-
Chris I would like to offer a consideration. On the requirements of the user I suggest that right or left should be the only option. I myself don't want the person that draws my name to be locked into anything other than right or left. I just want something that won't bonk me on the head when I draw it back. :)
-
I'm in. Like Slim I join PA last summer and missed it last year, looking forward to making one for a fellow member. It'll be fun :)
Greg
-
Good points guys. I can't wait to get in on this one
-
Great input everyone.
One of the things that makes this such a good event is that people often really step up to the plate and do there best effort. Often building their personal best ever. I have heard of many first time trials with success, because people are inspired to get outside of the comfort zone. All this is good for growth as well as the friendships built along the way. Embrace the challenge, take it serious. do your best and HAVE FUN!

I'm in !
Right handed
Shelf or knuckle
45#-55#
27" draw
LETS DO THIS THING!
-
Alright!! I decided I wasn't ready last year. This year I am all in. Will be looking for that official sign-up thread.
-
I know the rules will probably explain it when it come out but I'm curious, how does it exactly work, do you say what you want and someone makes it for you or do you say what you will build and blackhawk or whoever assigns your bow a home?
-
Easy on the trigger Cody ;)
Steve...all the names go in a hat and get drawn...each person gets drawn a name...then that name will be sent to you and you will secretly build that person a bow...do not contact the person you get..its a secret....so we don't know who's building a bow for us and we don't know when its going to arrive..its a big surprise that'll knock your socks off...but most importantly the most fun I get out of it is building a bow for someone who has no clue I'm building it for them and it shows up out of the blue at there doorstep...if you like suspenseful surprises and being the one who gets to surprise someone then this is for you ;)
I'm glad to see some new faces taking interest ;)

Jon...were gonna keep this as simple as we can...I do personally agree with you but I think there would be enough people to disagree...so we will give a general weight range and draw to hit,but if its missed its no big deal...were all bowyers and we all miss weight....and most of us would rather have a properly made and tillered 45 pound bow than a messed up hinged 65 pound bow...if you make bows you should know tiller and design are number ones...especially when it comes to building bows for someone else.
-
does this just apply to people in the US or can anyone join in (im in the UK ) also when will this take place, just so i know if i will have any timber dry. unless boards can be used? if so i might have a go it sounds like good fun. i am a novice though lol.
-
Sounds like it is all coming together, thanks guys for putting this together,I know it's a lot of work but feel sure it is much appreciated by all. :)

This really says it all.... folk here are about as understanding as they get if they know whats up........
-
Danny there usually is a few guys from overseas who sign up and it is open to y'all....now that being said...we will be given the option to stay in country or not...most folks stay in country as shipping costs and customs with other countries can be a pain in the butt. But some folks don't have an issue sending one overseas if need be....now say for example you sign up and no one else from the UK signs up and everyone stays in there own country then ya might get turned down...but that never has happened yet....although there was an issue at the end of last years trade with an overseas person...its easy for anyone to sign up and say yes,and not fulfill there vows because its online and folks live all over the place..its easy to fraud...but most everyone here is a person of honesty, trustful, and has integrity...and that's what makes the trade a success. But there always seems to be a few rotten apples no matter how hard we try to regulate who is allowed to join...guess ya get that anywhere and everywhere ya go tho. And want makes this site better than any other site/community is that there is folks who step up to the plate and fill those rotten apples shoes and make another bow to make sure everyone gets one who sent one out.
-

Pappy
Ur welcome politeful pappy ;) you have been a great example to us all..you lead by action first, then words...you are a true southern gentleman :)
-
it sounds good then. i wouldnt sign up if i didnt think i could get a bow together for someone. i just hope i have some dry wood when it starts.
-
Danny you can use a properly selected board, and even back it for that extra insurance seeing how its going to someone else. As long as its a serviceable natural materials bow that's properly tillered and designed for the weight and draw length boards are fine.
-
I can't decide if I want to join in this year. I love doing the trades, but I have some bows I want to build for people this year and I don't know if I'll have the time. I need to think about it some more. It does look like its going to be a good trade this year.

-
thats great i will enter then, i will try and get a proper stave if not i will use a board. :D
-
I have lurked over this for about two years, and am still going to sit this one out for one more year. I have a lot more to learn just yet to make the "best bow I can" and make it for some one else. But I sure do applaud all of you that can. Best of luck to all, and look forward the pictures and tales along the way.
-
>:D Im in as always lol >:D
Katt
-
More then anything this is all about being a blessing to others and more about the heart to build a bow for someone Else.As with the bow trades of past it never has been about the bow you get but the journey of the gift for another. It is a great way to express your appreciation and share your talents as well.
-
Danny, last year we had one bow that was going to England(I think) and the original bowyer didn't fulfill his obligation so another guy built the bow and lots of others said they would help with the shipping. It turned out one guy that wasn't in the trade sent the money to cover the shipping because he wanted to contribute. So we can work it out if no one else from across the pond signs up.

I would love to trade again this year :) the trade last year was great!
-
Thanks to the guys who stepped up and are running this thing! Did it last year and had a blast. Look forward to joining this year.

Its gonna be easy to run the swap with Eddie "Strongarm" Parker as the Security Manager.

stringstretcher if you can build a bow that YOU would hunt with that otta work, it's the best bow you can build NOW, everyone gets better every bow they make, Bub

I agree, Charlie I would be proud to carry a bow made by you
-
i feel the same way Charlie.i just don't have the nack yet.i am tring to get good enough to build some bows for a few friends first.i have one done for a friend that is going to the classic with me this year.he gave me the stave,so it is the least i can do.once i get a little better all of my friends better watch out.i've got stave with all their names on them.

Streatcher this will be my second trade and I'm glad I took the plunge,. It pushed me to build a better bow than the first. I was very apprehensive but super glad I jumped :) We're gonna have a great time!!!!!

I am one of those that falls in the crowd of "the fewer rules the better", but there has been one rule that has been consistently left out and I think it needs to be addressed.
Sign your work. Some might think it is a pretty petty little thing, but it means a great deal to the recipient. You might say, "But I'm no great bowyer like Hubert Hossenpfeffermeister, I'd be embarrassed to sign my bow." If you are that uneasy about it, maybe you should pass on the bow trade.
-
OK!!!
I'm ready but how does ya spell JW ???
-
"But I'm no great bowyer like Hubert Hossenpfeffermeister
I have one of his bows, it's pretty sweet :P
I'm thinkin' I might try this swap, but I'm not sure... the bows I see on here are intimidating.
-

Hmm, I can see where you're coming from there, JW but I have to admit that I have a hang up about writing on bows. There is a lot of writing on bows that i find down right unappealing. I'm trying to come to terms with this hang up as I'm making more bows that are going out to other people. The bow that I sent out last trade didn't have any writing on it. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Anyway, not sure what my point is but...
-
Coaster, it's spelled with a capital 7.
Weylin, look at it this way...you may not like the look of your signature, but the recipient is proud of having YOUR bow in THEIR hands. I'd love a bow from you, but if you signed it, it would mean so much more to me.
And lastly, think of how we are all aging...you may be helping remind some of us who made the bow we are in the woods shooting!!! >:D
-
Well said JW
-
I can build a pretty good bow and for this thing I'm going to build my best bow to date, or at least try. That's all I care about, is the bow that I'm going to give to someone.
One of you guys who are intimidated can make a bow for me if the moderators will allow it. It will be good for you to be intimidated and have to push yourself to make something shootable and I will be happy to be the motivation for that. If the bow you make is so bad in the end then I will either hang it on the wall as a memorial and conversation piece or I will make it shootable.
-
It will be good for you to be intimidated and have to push yourself to make something shootable
Very true! Not sure if I am going to get in. Maybe I will just sit back and make a bow in case somebody stumbles. And if nobody needs it, I can claim it for myself. I was really liking that bow I named "Jane", but it ended up betting sent to someone at Christmas time and once again I don't have a bow of my own I can shoot.
-
I think everyone should sign and date their bows. Not only like JW said but also because in the future someone might come across it and wonder. I have a few old bows that were given to me or I bought at flea markets that have no signature or date and I'm always wonder about them. We are all part of the future history(is that an oxymoron) and I for one want whomever finds one of my bows to know something about it.
-
And signing your bow may prevent someone down the road trying to lay claim to being the artist.
I had that happen to me. A very unscrupulous individual (a number of people in here are familiar with him) had me build a sinew backed horse bow. We agreed on a price of $400, but he only paid me half that much. Later that summer I found it in a local art gallery with his name on it and a pricetag of $1,700. Learned my lesson but good.
-
Jdub you surely won't forget ol' Froggy and where it came from will ya'.
-
Thanks for adding another rule j dub....lol....I only sign bows that go to other people, its only prudent
If anyone feels intimidated don't be...if you do sign up and feel you bit off more than you can chew then please speak up and let us know..a little communication goes a loooong way...and all the commitee members are not only here to facilitate the trade, but to help anyone out who needs some help...that's what were here for. I would rather see someone contact us either publicly or privately when in need of help, than being stubborn and not say anything. And this goes for any life emergencies,or problems with your build. If you need advice please ask,we are more than willing to help ya out and want to help you.
That being said I do think anyone entering should have some basics down in understanding what an acceptable tiller looks like. I have personally seen a couple trade bows that never should've been sent out...and I think they got sent out because of the pressure to get be sent out to fulfill there vow,and were too stubborn to let the facilitators know they were having a hard time with there build. Again..please let us know...I can't emphasize open lines of communication enough here.
-
I was in the trade 2 yrs ago and unfortunatly thru various life events was one of the "Bad Apples"....My trade bow was VERY late gettin to Keenan... That being said, Im gonna make a bow to have on hand incase someone fails to finish. Just a small attempt at redeeming myself and hopefully gaining trust from those I let down.....Brian
-
Brian, we all have rough times and Lord knows Ive been there as well a time or two. What matters is how we walk through that situation and you have certainly done that well. "You are welcome at my fire any time Bro" Great offering Brian! BTW that bow is still shooting great! TC&GB Keenan
-
Thankya Keenan! Means alot to me.... Brian
-
Id like to join in this Year
-
Alright Cesar! That ups my odds of gettin a Cesar bow!
-
Like some others, I feel a bit "unskilled" at bow building. Last year I was in 2 bow trades, I thought I sent out really sharp bows ( Osage ). I got back 2 really "beautiful" bows, I mean they are gorgeous bows. Lots of skill in them, lots of time invested - beautiful! I don't know if I would get back in or not this year. I just feel so humbeled. ????????
-
i think so long as you tried your best and your tiller is good then you really shoudnt worry about weather its on the skill level of others, if only people who were good joined then none of us noobs would have a chance to try our best to make something awesome
-
Wildcat Hunter, just think how much you learned from the 2 bows you got from obviously skilled bowyers. I'll bet every bow you've made since you got them is much improved just from being able to examine those bows and hold then in your own hand. I know I learned a lot just having one of Keenan's bows in my hand to examine close up and also to absorb some of his chi (energy/vibe whatever - hopin it rubs off LOL). Learnin from the masters.......Oh, thaaats how he did that! Or wow, that's nice I'm going to copy that handle wrap and arrow shelf.........
....
Now if I could just get my hands on one of those Strunk handle wrapped bows, I could figure out how to do that too
Everybody's got something to offer, even the noobs.
-
Ok ill get in again longs elk season dont interfer like last yr and no over seas brock
-
Now if I could just get my hands on one of those Strunk handle wrapped bows, I could figure out how to do that too
I could teach you... but then I'd have to kill you. ;) Just kidding, but honestly you should just go out to Tillamook and spend a weekend one-on-one with John Strunk. It'll be the best money you've ever spent and he'll teach you how to do his hand wrap.
-
Well, JW, immitation is a form of flattery. And with a price tag like what he put on it, you must be his idol. Now the question is, how much did it sell for?
-

None of that fancy finish work matters Wild cat Hunter. If you can build a bow that wont hurt anybody when its drawn, you qualify. Im miserable at every aspect of bow buildng but one, I can make the bow bend without breaking and hitting me between the eyes. My tips will never look like Keenans, my skins will never look like Wills, and my tillers will never look like Codys. Its just the way it is! The key, in my eyes anyway, is building a bow that isnt dangerous and that you poured your best into it for your person.

What PD said above about sums it up for me, better than I could have said it. I'm in aw over some of the bows I see on PA. I aspire to be as skilled, and produce the bows made by some of you guys. I'm not there. Probably never will be. I continue to improve with every bow I've made, and use the bows I see on here as a goal to shoot for. But, as a rule, my bows don't break. Not often anyway.
As for PD's bows, I think you underestimate your work.

None of that fancy finish work matters Wild cat Hunter. If you can build a bow that wont hurt anybody when its drawn, you qualify. Kat it took me quite a bit of thought to jump in last year but man I'm glad I did. My skill level is no where near that of most of the guys here but man it was a great feeling putting my heart into something that went to James Parker!!!! (talk about intimidation)... I'd take one of your bows in a heartbeat. Ive seen where you live and build them. Your lifestyles and personality adds to the desireability of a Wildkat Hunter bows.... One of the coolest things about this trade is seeing the personal touches from different folks..... Jump in Kat!!! Push yourself a bit and don't forget the horsetail wind check on the bow you send me............

Like whats been said above... Ifn you can make a good bend dont sweat it. Jump in and have fun... It aint the race.. but the journey. Everyone here was a beginner once(and still learnin)... Brian

sorry for asking but how exacly does this work ? is there somewhere your meant to sign up?

Now if I could just get my hands on one of those Strunk handle wrapped bows, I could figure out how to do that too
I could teach you... but then I'd have to kill you. ;) Just kidding, but honestly you should just go out to Tillamook and spend a weekend one-on-one with John Strunk. It'll be the best money you've ever spent and he'll teach you how to do his hand wrap.
You'll never go back to other wraps... It's too attractive.

Squirrelslayer,
The rules will be on the sign up thread when it is posted. International shipping can be expensive and is certainly a factor for those affected. We are aware there may be situations like this and we will be discusing if and how to make it possible and workable for all

Denied by the three month rule I am :(
-
Read the rule closer....there is a clause...and you can make a honest plea to the commitee and try to prove to them that you are capable of entering

Would love to but still a little green only have one good one under my belt but would help with some shipping if need be

I had a great time in last year's trade and would love to participate again, but I have committed to my 3 sons to make each of them a bow this spring/summer. I don't want to obligate myself to more than I can accomplish, however, I will try to make myself available to help in the event someone is not able to fulfill their trade obligation. Someone was kind enough to send me one under those circumstances last year.
