Title: Knife work. (Pic heavy!)
Post by: Stringman on January 08, 2013, 04:42:45 pm
Had several friends ask me to put some knives together so I brought these 4 along at the same time. Still got 2 smaller ones to put together, but they can wait.

A friend of mine handed me a real squirrelly antler and said he wanted 3 knives from the same horn and wanted TX chert on all of them. So I sent an appeal to a friend in TX and he shipped me a nice box of rock. I cooked it, spalled it, and came up with this blade handle combo.

Added a walnut cap and some sinew wraps (still needs a few more) and it looks pretty close.

This knife has a one of a kind feel that really makes your imagination wonder!

This is a piece of Georgetown I bought at a knap-in and sent to Soy. He sent it back and wanted it finished with a spur handle for a friend.

Another guy contacted me and wanted a set, 1 with antler, 1 with spurs. After a little discussion this is where we ended up.

This final shot shows them mostly completed, with a little oil on the caps

Ha! Ain't nothin to it! Getcha rock and take off everything that ain't part of the point. Then cut a slot in an ol piece of deer horn and glue and wrap it. Simple as pie!  ;D

Thanks for the compliments!

Without a doubt the finished product is way beyond nice.... but take another look at the knapping work. To bust those blades out is nothing short of outstanding.

Beautiful work!  What all do you have to do to the legs to prep  and preserve them?

Thanks guys, for the nice words. It usually takes one of us to appreciate all the work that goes into them.

Jeff, the legs are just left to dry and then sprayed with poly to seal them. Very simple and straight forward. When glueing the caps on I use TBIII and I've never had any problems with them noit holding.

I already posted this pic under campfires, but for those of you who haven't looked there this is a little better shot of them, now that they are completed.
