Heres number 3....a 56" ntn black locust molly curve with a 40/60 ratio. Its 50@28"...11.9 ounces mass weight....slight bendy handle...osage tip overlays....hemp wrap handle(love those)..a hair under 3" resting reflex...and it has a funny woopdy doo in the bottom limb. I tillered this one out when ryoon came out for an eve visit of bowyering fun. The wood was cut by Bob(hunterbob) and I back in march of 2012 behind his house...well Bob..i deem this some pretty good locust so far to take that kinda design ....sorry this one wasn't very photogenic....nuff said...here she is

That is nice, real nice. Can't wait for my BL staves to season. How's the cast 'hawk?
-
I'll take it.
-
pretty nice for a second tier wood, Bub
-
Very nice dude.
-
It looks like you just have the heart wood there, is that something you'd normally do or is it okay to use the sapwood as the back of the bow?
I've got a big BL stave thats been dring for close to a year that I should probably pick up soon. :)
-
you've been a busy beaver! Nice work
-
very nice work
did you steam bend those tips or use dry heat?
-
Thanks guys... :)
Greg it shoots fast enough for me ;)
Bubby black locust is prob my second favorite wood,n this is a good example why :)
Christian..yes its all heartwood, and in the majority of situations it is best to chase a heartwood ring with black locust
I can't stop Paul ;)
Richard the curves were bent with dry heat...thanks
-
Sweet bow Blackhawk!!! Ya just had to put some osage on it didn't ya. ;) Just couldn't stand workin with wood that wasn't yellow, or what? Just messin with ya. That is one awesome bow. I like it.
Tattoo Dave

I know, you've built some sweet a$$ed locust bows, but the king is yeller, bub

Really nice locust bow Chris, I'll be looking back at this one often I think.
-

-
Sweet bow like the narrow tips
-
That is really nice! Love the curves and graceful lines. Very good tiller and relaxed profile
-
Glad to see it made it through the shooting! I need to get to work on mine!
-
Dude you read my mind! Do you see an advantage to the recurves or is it just asthetics and string angle? Sweet looking bow Chris.
-
You sure are one talented bowyer there hawkman! Never cease to amaze :) I'm gonna have to get me a hawk bow some day >:D ::) :o
Can't wait to see #4 ;)
-
Sweet! Ive got a 65" stave that Im working on. Going for a similar look and DL. I was a bit tentative to go for 28" but after seeing this one.... DANG!
Really great looking bow.
-
That is another sweet bow . you have to be pushing the limits on that one. I love that Black locust we cut out back.
-
Thanks y'all :)
Haha Dave...yeah just had to put the king on it cus Ryoon was there,oh n guess what he was working with too? ;)
Yep Greg...saving the best for last ...so when am I gonna see you make something like this with your locust?
Come on Ryan...snap snap...I wanna see that thang all finished up ;)
Jon besides the aesthics n string angle benefits which make it even smoother to draw than a straight lever,it does increase performance in my opinion...BUT you must account for that additional reflex by putting more mass/width in the working limbs to withstand the added stress and still maintain a healthy set in the wood. Another thing I found by curving or reflexing levers is that there is no additional mass in a reflexed lever compared to a straight lever, which was contrary to what I thought I wood have to do if I did so before I started curving my levers. Now how much further can I go before I have to add more mass to them for stability reasons? I don't know? I have been pondering lately trying to go even more of a higher angle. As long as my string tracking is dead center thru each lever and the handle I believe I can actually go pretty far before I wood have to add mass for stability. Might have to add string bridges tho.
Just come on over n pick one out Will :o 8)

Its pretty good locust Bob...I decided to go for such a design first go around so I know what it can take, and how good it is...I'm gonna have to come get another quarter log off ya...I split that one in two and made this one and still have the other one yet
-
8) :o :o :o
-
Sweet blackhawk. Love those tips.
-
Gonna start a locust bow next Chris, after I finish the two buckthorns I'm on right now. Mine might be that short but I can assure you the design won't be that radical, I know my limitations lol.
Greg
-
Looks kinda familiar !
Glad I don't have that inferior yellow wood on mine !
Another good job !
See ya soon !

Wow! That is an awesome little bow. I am on my first BL bow now... I ain't trying anything like this little baby though - I will be trying something pretty basic, around 64" long. How was it to heat and bend?
-
Great looking bow. What width is the working limbs?
-
very nice Chris.i hope mine is number four.mine is probably the one causing you trouble.you are making some fine bows brother.keep them coming.i love seeing them all.and midget,i resemble that remark lol.i know i am short,i have mirrors.they are just closer to the ground.i will stand on a bucket and shoot that long yew bow and love every minute of it.you are doing great my friend.
-
That is strikingly beautiful! Very nicely done. Jawge
-
How do you know your limitations if you don't try Greg? ;)
Hey Guy..send it back n ill put some of that yeller stuff on yours too...see ya in under a month buddy :)
Thanks Howard ...well..its not as easily bent as osage, but it does correct/shape easily enough..just takes a lil more heat n time than osage. And locust likes to be tempered, but be careful not to overdo it or let the heat wrap around and scorch the back. I've had a couple locust staves I've taken out 90 degrees twist, corrected string tracking,n induced some reflex all in one heating/tempering session.
Turtle the limbs are +/- 1 7/8" wide in the working limbs.
Thanks Steve...unfortunetly yours is not #4...it lost a teeny bit more weight when I weighed it over the holidays...it should be ready soon tho to be bending. Osage and that design needs patience...bear with me
-
Very very nice black hawk. Almost makes me wish I had picked this one. But get to it already, I want to see that yew bow you gave me a sneak peek of. That thing looked incredible. ;D

I really do want to shoot some of your bows Chris, this one in particular. I think it will help me make better bows.
I am currently working a bow from the same tree this one is resting on in the first pic. You ever use that wood?
-
Wow very nice. Wow
Matt
-
Wow! What a bend in that little bow there. Nicely done! Have you thought about putting it through a chrono? It looks very efficient.
-
Wow Hawkman that has to be one of my favorites!!! You knocked that one out of the park. It may not be photogenic but to my eyes that makes for the perfect disappearing act on a hunt...... Well done!!!!
Man I like that one and the fact that it's in my spec range make me like it more :)
-
After much thought, I'm just gonna start calling him Molly. LMAO :D
Roy & Molly building bows together, has a nice ring to it:)

-
Chris ya need to make a video of you shooting that bow. Would love to see her in action.
-
Wow, what a beauty! Levers are so narrow and mass super light for 50 at 28!
I think you brought the wood very close to its limits!
-
Thanks guys :)
Can't wait to see yours Cesar
Hey Clint..sorry about you Bengals..ok not really.....;)....thanks pal
Don't you already have enough ugly bows Cody?..;)

Yes diliviu..the wood is at its limits for sure...its the only way I know how to build;)
-
Now that is a beauty, love everything about it. ;) :) Looks cold up there. :)
Pappy
-
such an impressive bow
-
I'm sorry to resurrect such an old thread but... is this a selfbow? Not sinew backed? How is this possible? Wow. Even if sinew backed it seems like a lot.
and let me know if it's bad to resurrect old threads like this...
-
That type reflex is possible being a non centershot bendy handle.Low mass is possible like that with bendy handle and heat treating too.I've questioned that with simson's bows too.Durability is in question in my mind. It's all in the tillering they say but in order to get a bow made like that the very very best wood is used too.Hawk had one of an ironwood long ago even shorter and same style but that one eventually gave it up though.I pulled on that one and IMO it did stack a little towards the end but lasted quite a while.
-
I question how long this bow lasted without chyshalls, i built one similar but with more working limb and length, and after a while got a few chyshalls right at the transistion to lever. Seemed an odd spot for it to show up
-
blackhawk, bow making happens during the late fall and winter for me these days. Gives me something to do. I did a BL bow last January.
I learned bow making on BL. I really like that wood.
I wrote a story on that bow for PA.
Yes, my bow making has slowed down considerably and I take my time. LOL. Have to.
Once again your bow is a beauty!
