I made a short Hickory a couple of years ago.It shoots good but has some stack and I figured it was because of the length. It is 56 tip to tip and about 54 N-N.It took very little set and shot
really quick, just not real smooth, also I had the grip kind of square in the front and wasn't confortable to hold.I decide to re work it and here is where I started.I have flipped the tips and redone the handle just waiting a day or 2 for it to dry and then I plan on restringing and see how the tiller looks.I steamed it Sat. and got the tips. done.I also plan on putting on some tip overlays.I will keep yall posted. The first is before I started and where is is now.It is 2 in. at the fades to mid limb the tapered to a little less than 3/8 at the tips.Hope she holds.it was 53 @ 26 when I started
that is about what I want it to be. :)

not enough snake in that bow to be made by you. ;D
-
Ya it is kind of straight. ;D
Pappy
-
Looks like one of those pyramid style bows--I love it :)
-
Looks like a real shooter to me. Are you going to finish it with skins or leave it natural? Nice looking bow!
-
Now that looks sweet! Not all twisted like that other stuff you been fooling with. I sure hope it works out, I would like to build me one just like that. Please keep us posted!
-
Looks good. Keep us informed. Jawge
-
I am going to let it dry till the weekend and then brace it up and see what I have.It has already been shot so the tiller should be close.Hope it will take some of the stack out of it.It shot
straight and hard but stacked like H#$$.I have enough problem with short drawing, don't
need a bow that stacks.Tracy I may put some skins on it.I have some short Copperheads
just don't know if they are wide enough. :)

Not trying to discourage you Pappy but I think that little bit of reflex will just pull out. I would have put about a 45 degree bend down at the 3 or 4 inches of the limb tip. Good luck hope it works for you! ;D
-
I thought it might, never done that to a hickory before.I may try and put more into
it this weekend .Think it will be OK to re steam it ?
Pappy
-
I thinnk you wasted too much space on those long fades coming off the handle ;D
-
For something like that dry heat works better. Looks good though
-
hey what an extraordinarily non-snakey pappy-bow this is! - very nice bow, can't wait to see her finished!
frank
-
Snedeker, the fads or only 3/4 in.Couldn't have made them much shorter.I will try dry heat.
I just haven't had much luck with dry heat on Hickory.Maybe I haven't been getting it hot
enough.Ya frank I ant use to this. ;)

Pappy, I think I would use one of the sets of forms we've used to recurve the last 8" or so of the tips. I would be surprised if you can get that kind of curvature out of dry heat with hickory though. If not for the possibility of pulling to much moisture out of the wood, I think I would try steaming again. :)
-
If its thin enough at the tip dry heat should work fine. I dont think you can get hickory to dry. Its to short to use one of the forms Greg copied from me. you just want to bend up the tips like this elm bow.its only 50"ntn. Its all about string angle with short bows.

Or this 50" osage

I used the forms we had ,just didn't use it all.I bent the last 4 inches of the tips and used dry heat.It seems to have worked and didn't check in the belly witch is what I was worried about.
I don't know if I got quite as much bend as yours Ryan ,but almost.I plan on bracing it this weekend.Looks a lot better.Hope it holds.Do you think i also need to heat treat the belly before
I brace it ? :)
Pappy
-
hey ryan! - that elm is a fascinating bow; great tiller and a nice overall appearance! how far is the pull in that picture??
frank
-
Pappy, I heat treat the belly on pretty much all my bows now. I dont see how it could hurt. Your going to want to pull on that baby on the tillering rack before bracing it. Its really going to raise the draw weight, and change the tiller. Good luck! ;D
Frank, thank you. I draw about 26.5 to 27" and it pulls about 50# at that length.
-
Thanks Ryan, hope it turnes out as good as that Elm.That one looks great. :)

Whew - just got back from Yellowstone NP and was treated to Pappy's very nice hickory (re-worked) bow. Thanks and bookmarked, too!
-
I took it off the form yesterday and plan on heat treating the belly today. It took a pretty good bent, just hope it is enough.
Pappy
-
Neato! gotta like those short bows! ;D

Got it tillered this weekend .I will have some full draw pictures when I get some one to take them.
Also put on some tip overlays and a set of Carp skins Mickey Lotzs gave me.First time I have used
them and they look pretty cool.It turned out 51@26 so I was pleased with that. Here are a few
pictures and it is coming along and with the skins.Tell what yall think. :)

the mid limbs are a bit too stiff for hickory, It might develop some frets near the fades. otherwise looking good.
Good luck finding it if left lying around in a buch of leaves :D
-
3 or 4 inches out from the fades ? Ya them carp skins should blend it to about anything. :)
Pappy
-
umm.. I'd say that maybe like 20 cm so 8 inches from the fades? it seems to bend some near the fades, but not right from the fades. hard to explain.. Wish I could modify the pic so that you could see what I mean.. how about an unbraced sideprofile in this stage of work? It could be easier to tell when comparing to the unbraced pic. ???
-
It don't seem to be taking much set now. This is right after it had been out to 25 inches.
Maybe 10 min.of rest.

In this case I could say that if it works that fine and takes no set to mention, leave it like that. I just told what I saw with the tiller, but it seems that that tiller is good for the bow. well done 8)
-
Very Nice Pappy! Love those skins...how does it shoot now?
Purty lil' bow!
R
-
Shoot good,I don't have the grip and finish on yet, maybe try and finish it this week and get some pictures of it done.It should be fun to hunt with it that short. It has also helped the stacking.
Pretty smooth to draw. :)
Pappy
-
nice bow i just split some hickory and i hope it turns out half as good as that one
-
Pappy, that's looking mighty good. I like those carp skins, may have to try that. How do you get the scales off without ripping the skin? I know carp have some serious scales on 'em.
-
The skins look great Pappy. How were they for applying? and what type of carp regular old carp, grass carp?????
-
really nice bow! especially like this backing!!!
it's grass carp, isn't it?!
frank
-
I think grass carp,Mickey Lotzs gave them to me so I ant sure.Hillbilly the scales weren't bad at
to get off, guess every who skinned it scaled it first.Dana it wasn't like snake skins I would say
more like putting on rawhide.I had to soak the a pretty good while to get the plyable and
then put them on and rapped them like snake or rawhide.I also washed them in dawn first to
degrease them.Seemed to have worked fine.I made the grip and put a coat of Tru Oil last night.
Hope to finish it up by the weekend. :) :)

Great looking bow Pappy. I thought you had enough wood to keep you busy for years. You keep re-working bows, and you will never get to the bottom of that wood pile. Justin
-
Ya this was made in 02 or 3 and was OK but I have learned a little since then on how to make them better so I decided to redo some that I thought was worth the trouble.Anyway GregB
has rationed me on the wood.Just kidding Greg. ;)This one isn't done yet ,maybe in a week or
2 if I take time off from hunting and just do it.Now that the weather has changed I want to hunt not work on bows,Man I need to quit this job it is really getting in the way of my fun. ;D ;)
Pappy
-
I hear ya on the bow building and work Pappy, those hickory bows been just sittin maybe today seein as how the weather is really nasty here, but then again I want to go huntin ;D And only 5 years to go and I can take my retirement at age 52 ;D ;D ;D
-
Ya DanaM I planed on that at 55 but when Iwas 40 it looked a lot better to be able
to do that than it dose when you get there. :)
Pappy
-
At age 47, I'm hoping to be able to retire at 55...
Anyway GregB
has rationed me on the wood.Just kidding Greg.
Just save me a few character pieces of osage is all I ask! ;)
-
Got the grip on this weekend and now just need to get it sealed, then I will get some pictures of full draw and the finished bow.The carp skins really turned out nice, may have to do some fishing. ;D
