Title: where do you order wood from
Post by: bobbykelley on December 07, 2012, 03:50:58 pm
I don't have a place to go out and cut wood to make a bow and was wondering if you guys could point me to somewhere to order some good wood to make some bows out of. I've made a red oak bow and I am thinking of ordering a kit to make a recurve from but I all so would like to order a stave or two to work with. Thanks for any help.

Make lots of board bows before trying out a stave.  Cut your own staves if you can.  When all else fails try Pine-Hollows Archery or Raptor-Archery.  They've got good stuff.

I've gotten lots of wood just by talking to people and telling them I make bows.  I tell them about the kinds of wood I need and many people will volunteer.  I also have gotten lots of wood right after a storm too.  People have trees that blow over, and they are all too happy to have someone come and get it for them.  Even pieces of the tree if you're like me and only have a car to haul it in.  All it takes is a little sweat investment.  Landscapers will sometimes let you in on wood.  If all else fails ebay can be a source, though you have to be careful.

Check the free section of craigslist after a storm. Check the firewood posts and see if there is anything of use.

There is a shop in my town that does custom molding, flooring, and decking.  They let me pick through the hickory flooring and ipe decking. The best bow I've made so far has been a red oak mollegebat I made from a scrap off their discard pile (It was only 65" and tapered down it's length). Can't argue with the price, $40 worth of wood has kept me working continuously on bows for the past 6 weeks. :)
