While Iam waiting for my real bow wood to dry >:D
Steve I mean seabiscuit I MEAN seaBASS, sent me a nice piece of horse apple to try. Now Ive helped build 2 other hedge bows but never spent much time with the wood. So this piece is THE first osage to be molded by my hands. The wood has nice tight rings, hard and made my scrapping arm sore.
I left to sapwood as a riser in the handle and also at the nocks. After working the wood one night it was bright yella, the next morning to my surprise it had turned orange! No complaint there.
I took it kind of slow and it's true it doesn't take a lot of this wood to make a bow.
She came in right on target and took almost no set, despite my aggressive tiller technique.
She shoots smooth and surprisingly quick.
Anyways, I hope I did you Osage guys proud.
Here she is.
63" NtN
1.5 wide to .5 tips
Black on black John Strunk handle wrap.
A perfect 50#@28"
Thanks for lookin :D

Wow, just ninjaed your way through... dang! nice job!
-
Bryce that is exceptional. Very nice detail on the handle wrap and spot on tiller with a great profile. You did that Sage proud. Even if it isn't a PNW wood >:D
-
Sweet, Bryce! I really like the sapwood riser, haven't seen that one before. Can't wait to see it drawn. I also love John Strunk's wraps. I can't seem to get away from them.
-
Looks really nice.
-
Nice work!
I like the sap wood nocks.
Are they gonna hold up?
-
That is one nice lookin bow! Love the sapwood accents!! VERY well done fella! I noticed your last name is Ott..any relation to Tim Ott?? ???
-
cool bow i really like the sapwood on the handle and tips
-
seabiscuit really likes it.that is why you should send it to him.i am still liking the sapwood that you left on brother.you did an awesome job.you still have my address right?lol
-
I really like this bow. Looks like you could shoot it all day long.
-
Nice bow
-
Very nice bow Bryce! Handle wrap and sapwood looks awesome. Not bad for inferior wood, hehehe ;)
-
We might let you try another piece since you did so well with that one. I left sapwood handle and tips on a bow with wax finish and they turned black with time. Will be interested how it colors if at all under gloss finish. Good work for a Left Coaster - heck, would be proud of that in the Midwest.
-
Nice bow there! Like the way you left the sapwood on the handle.
-
Very nice. Spot on tiller.
-
Beautiful bow. I love how you left the sapwood on just the handle. Stunningly beautiful. Hehe, I bet you 5 bucks that was one of the osage staves I sold steve a while back. ;D A sister stave (or brother stave, it was a decent sized family) went to a guy in norway, who made a flight bow out of one of em, and according to him got 357 yards on his first shot with it. Good stuff that batch.
EDIT: I didn't catch that you left the sapwood on the nocks as well, they looked so much like overlays! Very slick! Never seen that before...
-
Bryce, that is all around gorgeous! Like everybody else, I really like the sapwood riser and tips. If they do end up turning black, that will look just as great! Beautiful.
-
That's really cool what you did with the sapwood. That is a great looking bow all around.
-
Muffin, thanks man.
Keenan, I'm saving the good stuff for a rainy day....wait....
Weylin I know what you mean I can't go back to any other grip wrap. It's attractive and feels good in the hand.
Thank you Steve.
Thanks sharp, yeah unlike yew the sapwood is pretty hard. Once I'm done with some more of this yella wood I'm gonna move onto that juniper you handed me the other day. How was the drive back to New Mexico?
Will H, thank you! No I don't know a Tim Ott.
Thank you duck.
Seabiscuit, I do t think I'm gonna part with this bow any time soon. Yep still have your address for future trades :D glad you like it.
Jon, thanks. It does have a pretty smooth draw.
Thanks Rob!
Okie64, hahaha come on man! I never said it was inferior lol if we look back on that thread you will see I stood up for osage haha, but no it's not bad at all ;)
Shaun, yeah I might try another. I got 4 staves left we'll see what comes around. It turned black!!!?? I used 4 coats Tru-oil we'll see what happeneds. Pfft! come on you know all the best bow makers live on the west side! >:D
Cody, thanks man. Loved your lever bow, I might try something similar.
Thanks Slim!
TMK, that's awesome this bow might have a sister in Norway. I've never built a flight bow but is is on my "bowyers bucket list" thanks for the compliment.
Thanks CMB! I hope they don't turn black :(
Thanks Gordo!
-
stunning bow, very nice details, esp. love the handle
I'm missing the fd pic ...
simson
-
Wow, very beautifull Bow and nice details. Missing the fd as well :(
-
Uuuuuuhhhh.......hhhhmmmmm.......? You know the rules Brycey........If it iant bowing it aint a bow!
-
Those are some tight rings, I know what you mean about being sore from scraping. I developed tendonitis once from scraping too much, thankfully rest fixed it.
Beautiful bow, like others have said, the sapwood is all that. Be sure and post again later in time to let us know if the sapwood changes color at all.
I echo the cries for a full draw shot.
-
Real nice yella bow. Nice curves too! Still waitin on that last curve...you know...full draw!! ;D
-
Why am I hearing the jeopardy theme song? ???
-
That's one gorgeous looking osage bow Pinecone. I've made 16-20 from osage and none of mine looked that nice, you need to use this wood more often friend because it's apparent your can do right by it. Now lets see that FD cause I'm sure it will be as pretty as the rest of the pics. :)
Greg

Know ones around to take the picture. I'll try and post it this afternoon.
-
Thank you Simson!
LJB, thank you!
Haha I know Chris I'm trying to get someone to take the picture but the woman was out spending my money all day today... And it gets dark around 4:30 so I don't have too much time.
Rps3, shoulder and forearm took a beating but that's alright it was worth it in the end.
Hasn't turned black yet :)
Thank you lesken!
Peer pressure! Haha thanks blackbird!
Badly bent, thank you very much. You just gotta let the wood talk to yah :) and I'm sure you have some beautiful osage bows in your collection:)
Sorry no full draw yet if I have to I'll take the shot in the house later this evening.....
-
Stunner. Love the profile.
-
Beautiful, looking forward to the full draw picture, finish work and brace tiller looks excellent. The sap wood left on is cool also. :)
Pappy
-
Sure is handsome. Great to see little differences in bows every now and then like your sap wood handle.
-
Beautiful interpretation with the inclusion of the sapwood. Love it. If you keep it out of the sun most of the time it will take longer to turn dark. I don't think it will matter what you finish it with there will be no way to keep osage from turning dark over time other than to keep it out of the sun when your not using it. We can at least enjoy the contrast for now. I think you may have just started a trend. Next time I harvest some osage I will be leaving some sap wood on the tips and the handle area of a few staves.
Now then.....we want full draw....we want full draw. Lol Danny
-
The drive back was great.
I had a buncha bow wood piled in my sleeping quarters but hey, I can compromise. About half of my VM had some gnarly bug damage. It didnt notice till I got home :(
I now have enough dry Ocean Spray for years...
I agree with another poster, you may have started a trend.
I just got my first osage stave too, I was thinking about leaving the sap wood on all together, tight rings on that one. Or I may just go your route.
Either way very fine work.
And congrats on the deer earlier this year.
-
Full draw is up on original page.
Thank you dwardo
Thanks pappy
Thanks Parnell, I always try and do some sort of art. Then someone informed me that my bows where art just a different medium other than paint and pencil. That's why it's 'Artisan' work. Not craftsman work :)
Thank you sidewinder, I thought, why glue on overlays a risers when it's already right there in nature.
Sharp, the scenery was probably awesome! I'm not against starting a trend :)
Sorry to hear about the VM:(
You need to post that gambles oak bow! That's a beauty for sure!
Take all the sapwood off, except where you want it. From what I've been told its useless weight.
-
Love the use of the sapwood and great job on the finish. Thanks for sharing.
-
Yes! The full draw!! Sexy curves right there 8)
-
Ahhhh yes, nice BOW Brycey boy!
-
Awesome Bryce, Great looking full draw and tiller looks great. Well done
-
Love everything about that bow! very creative, very well done! GOOD JOB!
-
Very Nice! I'll go on record now.... Thats a BOM winner...
-
I've seen worse :P
-
Really sweet lookin' bow!
-
Hey thank all of you very much for the kind words.
Blackbird, IS THERE NO PLEASING YOU!!? J/k:P

A real beauty. Awesome tiller and I like the handle area. :-)
-
Thank you gentlemen :D
-
Very nice !!!I need to learn how to do that style handle wrap ;)
-
You nailed it Bryce !!!
Sweet shooter :)
-
I love the concentric sapwood rings moving out in the fades. Something so completely gorgeous about that.
-
I really like what you did with the sapwood on both the tips and grip. Great looking bow!
-Dan
-
Gorgeous Bryce. What do ya mean surprisingly quick.....LOL.Cool way to incorporate something different with the sapwood left on and your handle work really sets it off nice. That's why those Indians that made and shot hedge could double as weight lifters......LOL.
-
That's a sweet looking curve. I really like the sapwood looks too. I have made six osage sapwood bows and really likethe contrast after they darken. The deep red and cream colored white looks awesome . Congrats. On the new bow.
-
Thanks guys

Yeah I heard osage was a little slow, I haven't shot it through the chrono yet we'll see how it does :)
-
Bryce great work! I want to bring my O66 STHIL down for that maple...at least it looks like a burled up maple. ;)
-
STHIL!!?? That thing would end up breaking in half! Lol jk
What's in the picture is the skinny side:) of the burl.
-
i just saw the full draw.man you did that osage some justice.looks like i need to send you some more.great job buddy.get me a yew stave when you get the chance.we'll do another trade.
-
Man this yew list is long....up in the 20's
But I will hit you up next time I need some Steve. I likes the tight rings that make it that orange color:)
Thanks again!
