Title: Hickory help, update
Post by: spyder1958 on November 23, 2012, 07:46:36 pm
Ok gang, Redone the long string, scraped at the fades going into the 8" tips.
Now, what say you?

The string is tight to belly, so some pull on limbs as it sits on block.

Also the right limb will be to top and the pull hook is pulling on the string 1 1/4" above center.

Do some scraping on the midlimbs and then shorten your string up and see what it looks like. Looks llike most of the bend is happening in the handle right now but that could change when you shorten the string up.

Scrape/rasp as said before me midlimb to tips or whereever your bend ends. I like to leave my tips stiff. Exercise it a few times.

After this, you should be pulling your draw weight past 10 inches or so id just go to a short brace. I don't like long strings as i mentioned before. If the short brace looks good, scrape some more. Exercise, then go to a higher brace height or w/e your ideal height is. Mine is about 5 or 6 inches.

Am I crazy or does it look like the bow is being pulled backwards? is that the handle riser sticking up? Not trying to insinuate that you'd do something like that, I just can't make my mind see the picture any other way.

Oh, haha, that makes a lot more sense. That's a cool looking stave, I'm looking forward to seeing this turn into a bow.

I was thinking the same thing. Thought maybe my eyesight was going bad.

Thanks, okie64, Dictionary, for the advise . weylin, thanks I'll be posting more as I get closer for more advise.
Ya steve, got to glue on the tip overlays, finish thinning tips, cut nocks, then we can finish tillering.
I hope to get 3 hickory and 3 epi/boo bows done and shipped by Christmas.
Have the better sister to this one cut out and ready to start removing belly wood.

Yea Steve, I guess I should have done the tips before now so i could brace, but I figured I'd long string to she if she was going to hold together. glued on overlays today and floor tillered her sister.
Thanks Hrothgar.
