Title: What is the best glue for laminating wood layers?
Post by: zinger on November 14, 2012, 03:23:09 pm
Wondering what people here think is the best overall. Epoxy? Titebond? Contact cement? Maybe hide glue or one of the special formulas they sell?

tb3 works as good as anything, it's cheap, readily available and has a longer work time than the other tight bond glues, Bub

i have used titebond glue to glue joints on my cherry cabinents ==made for my kitchen.  i have used scrap pieces and hit it with a hammer and the wood breaks before the glued joint does.  I just purchased titebond's two part glue and it is supposed to be even stronger.  I purchased it from rockler.com  .  they are selling it for half price right now.  I will use this next time I build bow components.  I have been using EA-40 expony for building the limb laminates.

Nothing but TB3 for me, including warbows up to 120#.

Well it sounds like TB3 should work fine. On the one backing lamination I did (hickory backing on red oak) I used TB2 and it worked just fine. I used plastic shrink wrap on that one, which clamps the whole thing perfectly only it takes much longer to dry (4-5 days) because of it virtually locking the air out. I did punch some small holes in the sides to let more in and I supposed that helped a little. So one of the things that got me thinking about possibly using something else like an epoxy was that they apparently don't need the airflow that the white glues need to dry and this is good for me, being that shrink wrap is the easiest way for me to do lams (hope to get some forms built eventually but I don't have a bandsaw to do nice even cuts). Maybe there is a different technique of wrapping the lams that would let more air in, I don't know.

Tb3 works just fine. Made a heavy 180# warbow for a friend using Gorilla woodglue and now it's all I use for the heavy hitters. Burnt a piece I laminated just for the firepit to see what would happend and didn't even come close to delaminating!!!!!

A 180lb warbow - whoa! Was that that a huge piece of yew laminated to a backing? I would think it would have to be 72" plus to get to that weight, assuming that it's an ELB type.

Maybe there is a different technique of wrapping the lams that would let more air in, I don't know.

You can use bicycle tire inner tubes to wrap them.  They probably make a tighter glue joint than plastic wrap because they are more elastic.  It also allows the glue to dry overnight.  I just posted a demonstration video a few days ago, if you are interested here's a link.

The 180# bow was bamboo backed osage with a 1/4" strip of purpleheart between the laminations. I'll see if I can get pics from my friend. He stand 7' 2" and is crazy strong. Needed him in the shop for a week for stringing and unstringing while checking the tillering. Now let get back to gluing up laminations shall we? :D Didn't intend on hijacking this thread. Sorry there Zinger.
