Title: Short Locust Pyramid
Post by: JonW on November 10, 2012, 01:06:22 pm
Another from the same tree as the other locust bow. This one was straighter to start with so I went for a shorty pyramid. First time using this design with this wood. Won't be the last. This is just a quick and easy bow to make and I really like how it launches an arrow. 53" and 52# @ 26" of draw.

Nice job again Jon and showing off how good locust is with a shorty...I got some ideas and am wanting to do some short high stressed designs with locust to see what it really can take.

Very nice Jon. I'm liking these short pyramids your posting, they have the look of serious hunting weapons. Was that stave from a larger
diameter tree like 8" or more? Only asking because I'm curious about the amount of crown on locust bows. I haven't made to many from locust but for me I had better luck with higher crowned smaller dia. staves than staves from larger trees. Also that looks like some
nice grain and color on that bow, would love to see a close up pic of the limbs showing off the wood.
Oh and great bend by the way.

That black locust is producing some keepers! Getting all of the power out of it.

Thanks guys. Greg it was a large diameter tree at around 10 inches if I remember correctly. Really nice tree. I think I got something like fourteen staves from that tree. I have made a few locust bows but nothing this wide before. I really tend to think it likes to be a little narrower and thicker than what I did with this one.

I like everything about that bow.  Between your bows and Blackhawk's pitches, I am going to have to try some locust.

Thanks again everyone. Simple bows made by a simple mind ;D Hrothgar I used to super reflex most of my bows but it got harder to string them the older I got. Now I just have to be better at tillering them.
