Title: Ipe backing question.
Post by: Mark Anderson on November 06, 2012, 06:38:27 pm
Ok Christmas is coming so there are several bows in the works all of Ipe. I e never worked Ipe before.
I want to back them be ause they are gifts however I normally back bows (when I do back them) with silk rawhide or linen. Does Ipe need something more substantial than these or will they suffice? I may be able to get ahold of some boo and hickory but I really can't spend any more in these gifts.
What are y'all's thoughts?
Mark

Mark, I work with IPE a lot. It is a wonderful wood for compression. I back mine with bamboo.
If you could get 1/8 inch hickory that would be my second choice.
With the bamboo backing I glue in a R/D shape. Should be able to do the same with hickory or white oak.
