let's get this thing going, pay attention to the shipping dates below and remember this is a FUN!
If you would like put a little info about what you like bow specs ect so your giftee can read it and have an idea, but it all comes down to what you get is what you get so dont throw a fit. This gift exchange will be all HANDMADE GOODS by you for your recipient, the gift should be made by you from the heart not from the wallet so dont go out and buy something . The gifts do not have to be primitive gifts they can be anything that you make with your own two hands. Also if someone needs personal info on thier recipient in order to build something for that person then I will get that as well. The sign up cut off will be October 1st at midnight, after that we will get the names out to you within 3 or so days as to who you are sending to. Anyone involved will be expected to ship out there gift NO LATER than Jan.15th and no earlier than Dec.15th Thanks and let the sign up begin!! If there are any questions please ask and we will try to get them anwsered for you.
As Pat B said Primitive archer is not involved in this exchange, it is something we are doing as members! AND AGAIN ITS ABOUT WHAT YOU GIVE NOT WHAT YOU GET SO NO WHINING! LOL
I'M IN!
Ok while we are at this we may as well go ahead and send mailing info to me or fishfinder via PM, So please send me your mailing address like this so I can copy and paste it to my list

anything handmade or a stave, or knappable material. If its a bow or arrows my draw is 29.25" and the arrows would be best at 30.5-31" and if its a bow, 45-60# is great. But whatever you come up with is fine with me ;D

28" draw, like my bows in the 50-55# range. I'm happy with other handmade goodies as well, but I have no clue what the range of possibilities even are; surprises are always fun!

-
I'm in.
Not picky. Anything is OK.
;D
-
Some of us are not good bow makers, but bows are the "class act" I guess. I sent in my hat, shirt, pant, and shoe size. Who knows what the drawing holds in store. This sounds like fun, some other things are knives ( flint and steel ), shooting tabs, gloves, arrows, one of those club things, furs ( I love tanned skins- have them all over ), how about a "cordage bow string", etc. :) :)
-
wildcat hunter, while bows may be the top o' the wish list, anything homemade or materials gathered are good as gold, when ya get your name, read their post's and see what they are into, Bub
-
44 signed up as of now, Bub

Hmm... 3 PMs sent over the last week and a half, and no responses... Guess I'm not allowed to participate? I mean, that's cool, I'm not the most prolific member of the site, but it'd be nice to just be told that... :-\
-
I don't think anyone has gotten a response. The person your trading with won't be sent out until after the signup closes. No need to get aggravated. ;D
Jon
-
No aggravation, I'm mostly concerned that I never made the list on page 1. ???

-
I am in.
I am not a very active poster, but I read the board daily
I am up for anything homemade, if a bow RH, 55# at 28 would be excellent.
I absolutely loved the stone knives I got last year.
I just did a trade with Cip, so I have somethings I have been building that should be excellent for the exchange.

-
I'm in I like anything primitive I shot right handed this sounds like a lot of fun never did nothing like this before.
-
I got in early and bailed out. After reading many of the entries I felt unqualified because it looked like a Christmas bow exchange and I didn't feel confident enough in my abilities to participate.
Since, I've had second thoughts and would like to reup. I'm hoping you pair me with someone who can use honey, beeswax, antlers, bamboo arrows, deer back sinew, or maybe some staves.
Hope this will work out OK for someone. Fred
-
fred, im glad you decided to get back in it, and im sure anyone would be happy with anything you give them, i know i would
-
Count me in...anything primitive I shoot right handed
-
All that stuff sounds great Fred. I'm sure anyone would be happy to receive any of it.
-
I really am excited about this trade! cant wait to send out my gift, and excited to see what people are giving! maybe everybody can post on this thread what they got when they get it?

I've never done a trade before. For 4 years I watched and said, "I should have done that," but didn't. So, this fall I'm doing 2 trade, this one and the board bow trade. I'm excited. .
-
Im with you there Hedgeapple! but i have only been at this for 6 months, so there is a bit less skill where i stand. cant wait to do some trading! hope to make a few people really happy! ;D
-
What an honor to be included on this list, great bunch of people! I have already revised my list of possible goodies to send. Doubtlessly it will be revised and revised yet again.
OOOH! And another idea! A 5 gallon bucket of wood shavings and a bottle of wood glue! Do-it-yourself laminated bow kit! >:D
-
im thinking something a bit better than that... maybe some gravel or something :P
-
Like sending a die-hard knapper some stale Ritz crackers to practice his knapping skills?
-
well, i meant it in a way more like something with lithic tools or something.

Thanks for the gift of friendship from a very loving family !!
Have fun !!
Guy

Since it is fairly new I'd call it modern art. I thought about cutting it to size and framing it to hang in my living room but I don't think the chicks would dig it!
-
allright everyone, had my wife draw the names and she said she'd post them, atleast enough so i dont have a clue who got me >:(, anyhow ya'll be getting some pm's real soon, remember to post any progress ya want and have some fun, remember it's all about what your sending, not what your getting, Bub
-

Got my name. ;D
Now to start stalking my recipient. >:D
-
Yes, let the stalking commence. What do you make for a guy who has everything? This is going to take some real in-depth, creepy-type stalking :) I hope this doesn't get weird >:D
-

Too late, I already got your middle school gym teacher's name and phone number. I will have your most secret fear exposed soon enough! Mwahahaha!
-
Got my name,gift almost complete!
8) 8)
-
Hey I didn't get my name yet???? I've got a few projects started all ready JeffW
-
Got my name . well not my name but someone else. LOL.
And I did do some sneaky stalking on the guy and I think I have a good idea of what he would like.
So what is the deal we are not aloud to talk to the recipient and let them know we have there name and just let them be surprised when the gift shows up or what? This is my first Christmas exchange . This is going to be fun.
-
that's right don't talk to you guy, supposed to be a suprise, Bub
-
Dont forget to post pics along the way,,Ill get some up of mine soon. :)
-
Well I got the name and tried the stalking thing. Without giving the recipient a hint, I will just say that stalking did not work. So, That leaves me to do only one thing, use my imagination. >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
-
I will try and get some pics up very soon of my gift to %#&* . I think the lucky person will love what I made.
-
a little peek at what someone will be getting
-
and one of the trade points on the arrows . the arrows have self nocks and wild turkey feathers. bow is osage finished in paraffin
-
A good way to "spy" on your name is look up his posts. They will tell you what he's done, intrested in, etc!
-
wow your quick hope that's headed to RI ;)
-
holy crap! I like that a lot.
Jon
-
Very Very Nice Bow and Arrows HB !!! :P
-
Some lucky :-X is going to have a nice surprise and a Very Merry Christmas. Nice job on the gift. That's awesome!!!!
-
so hunterbob, mind giving some specs on that bow ;D ?
-
thanks. the osage bow has some snake to it she is 67" 66" ntn . leather handle 1" handle 1 1/4 at the fades and holding that to about mid limb and the last six to eight inches narrows down to about 1/2 inch and sports deer antler nocks. made this one all by feel no tiller tree so I never did check the weight but feels like she is pulling 60#@28"
-
Well, I reckon I should make it easy for the poor fellow who drew my name. I dont post much here, though I probably should post more. I Am right handed with a fairly short draw of 25 inches and dont like to draw anything over 55 lbs. I dont have a preference on arrow length, long or short is fine with me. I am a size 10.5 shoe. I like the natural color of wood for any project over any paint. My favorite colors are red and blue, mostly dark blue. My clothes size is x large ( ouch that hurt to type ) I like short skinning knives and 7 inch chopping knives for making bows and choppin through bone and cartridge. I love hunting and fishing. I love long walks on the beach, warm puppies, sunsets, and really have an appreciation for the arts, especially the nude ones :) ( honestly, I do portraits, not talkin the glossy paged periodicals here ). I am on paleoplanet the most under the same handle. I will be happy to receive anything so please, whomever, dont loose any sleep over me ;)
Now I am off to go stalk my person.... who has so many posts, idk where to look first....
-
I'm starting work on my gift later today. This is really fun. If we're posting any progress pictures or build alongs, should we do it here, start a new thread or does it not matter? I wanted to check before I cluttered an area up. Thanks!
-
I'm amazed that you guys have started already. When did you find the time, or have you had this planned in the back of your mind for some time?
I can't find enough info on my guy to even have a clue where to begin. Sure wished I knew all the other sited he has visited and handle that he used over there.
-
Now I am off to go stalk my person.... who has so many posts, idk where to look first....
I'm much like you, Sleek. I love long walks on the beach, warm puppies, sunsets, and poking dead things with a stick. Whatever you decide is just fine with me. >:D
When I looked at HunterBob's post of his contribution I thought, "WOW! NICE STOVE! Shipping is gonna kill him!"
-
:)And I was thinking when I saw HunterBobs post, Oh sheet!!! maybe he got me,,,, until I read the 60#@28 ??? :( :'( :'( :'(
-
Figure people are already posting in progress pics on here, so I'll join in.
Ignore the messy apartment floor ::)
It's a maple backed maple bow, all glued up. Tillering starts tomorrow evening!
She's gonna be a bendy handle r/d, and I'm shooting for a relatively high draw weight at a relatively high draw length for my intended recipient. Well, high for me anyway. Some of the rest of you probably wouldn't mind. This one should be a challenge, but these always turn into sweet and accurate shooters, and wicked fast >:D.
-
JW, that's funny, I don't care who you are. I had to go back and look at the stove!!
That's a lot cleaner than my getup. If you get one from my kitchen you might want to disinfect it before sticking it up close to your nose to see how sweet it smells.
-
You know JW, I actually had to stop myself before i started posting the lyrics of an ole willy or waylon song. Man those guys knew how to be... My heros have always been...
-
DAMN! Did I miss out? I started a new job and have had little time to get on line. dpg
-
got my name and have already finished my side quiver.i will try to post a pic tomarrow.next up,one dozen arrows and an arm guard.this is getting fun already.

-
thanks Lesken.i am just tring to make some nice stuff.i have never worked with leather before,it is a first for me.i think i am starting to like it.
-
That is one of the coolest arm guards I have seen. I hope it's headed this way. If I got that Armgard alone I'd be thrilled!

-
that is some really fine leather work.you would'nt by chance have my name would you? nice work
-
I am really not the craftsman that many of you are so I think I am stuck with building my recipient a bow for the Christmas exchange. Maybe by this time next year I'll have picked up some other skills??? I roughed out a Vinemaple and an Osage stave a while back and the Vine maple is about done and hits the specs for my gift but since we have quite a bit of time before deadline I am not sure if this will be the one or not???
This bow has me hard pressed to finish with a grip because of the way the handle looks unfinished. I don't know if I want to cover it??? Should I wrap it, inlay a rest or leave it as is to shoot off the knuckle??? Would you want it wrapped?

The back I have decide that nature did a better job than I could ever do so it is done. I just used a light coat of instant coffee and alcohol to define what was already there.

man,i am liking the handle the way it is.it looks very nice buddy.good job.
-
i just saw that everyone is puting in their bow specs.just in case righty 48 to 60@26.but i like anything handmade or gathered.i am really easy.
-
that's a sweet one just as is coaster
nice job on the leatherwork seabass, be carefull as it's as habit forming as building bows, Bub
-
Holy CARP! Please dont wrap that handle, its stunning!
-
That is one cool lookin bow, Coaster! Not sure I would wrap that handle. I like it the way it is!! 8)
-
Man Coaster, that is a beautiful stave!
Tracy
-
That sure is pretty. I would have left the handle proud, also. Someone is going to be very happy.
-
That is one hell of a fine looking bow. Nice work.
Jon
-
Coaster, I agree with the others. That's a great looking bow and the handle is stunning. I'd leave it unwrapped and let the lucky recipient determine whether or not they want to cover it.
-
Looks great from my perspective! Nice work folks!
Scott
-
here it is guys, part three of my gift is underway.i recieved my shafts, feathers and points from three rivers today.they are 50-55 cedar shafts with pink and black 4" parabolic feathers and 145 grain field points.i cut them to length, tapered and burnt them.remember this is a 3D shoot kit and pink is easy to find.hope you like them.getting ready to go back to the man cave and start sealing them.
-
Man sea bass, your recipient is one lucky guy...
Jon
-
did you really have to set the bar so high? whoever you have is going to be very happy
-
i am not trying to set the bar high.i can't make very good bows and i know alot of you guys can.i want my name to have a good x-mas and i also like doing stuff like this.it keeps me out of trouble.i am just having fun.this is my therapy.
-
Nice productive therapy session!
Scott
-
thanks Scott.i have a stressful job.this is my only release.

-
Oh man! I can't wait to watch this one develop!
Scott
-
nice forge and anvil.i can't wait to watch your progress.
-
the forge is just a propane forge that my dad had and the anvil is an old haybudden that came up from texas to montana on a chuck wagon in the late 1800s with the XIT ranch
-
the first pic is of the blade starting to be shaped the second is of the bevel started the third is a bodkin i made while waiting for the knife to heat up

nice knife so far, and i love the bodkin ;), make me wish i was near my forge

Well fellas, I got truely Grinched this year. Just found out as of 1 Jan 2013 I will be joining the ranks of the unemployed :( Position is being cut. I hope my receipiant will understand if things are a little down scaled this year as time and money are going to be tight.
-
agd68 I hope things pick up for you and heck if it's me bake some cookies :)
It ain't about money 8)
-

thanks guys. I know it's not about the money. Just feeling a little down I guess, but at least Im on the warm side of the dirt so that's something positive.

Ummhumm, you bowyers saying this aint nothing extravagant is like Picasso saying It's just something I threw together. ;D
-
I cant decide what I want to make after seeing the stuff other are working makes me want to put up something really cool, but i just can't decide. might have to stalk my person a bit and see if any of their old posts will give me any ideas
-
;D As the Good Book says "to whom much is given, much is required!" I ain't trying to show up nobody, but God has blessed me and I'm just trying to be a good steward. If I were to go out to my garage and throw some rocks in a box I would know that I slacked off. That just ain't me, so I figured I'd at least try to come up with a little shooter and if that don't work out THEN I'll throw some rocks in a box. ;)
Agd - I hope I get something from you cause it's gonna come from a lot of thought!
Scott
-
agd,if you get me do'nt even worry about it.also,if you need anything in your hard times let me know buddy.i will help you out if i can.
-
agd, dont feel bad about ANYTHING you choose to give, you know your doing your best with what you can afford to do, if you got me then whatever you come up with if fine.
-
heres some more pics of the knife for XXXXX it's not quite finished i still have to punch holes for the pins on the handle, put the makers mark on it and of course the handles. also in the pic is a friction folder blade that is not quite finished either.
-
nice work Duck.those are turning out nicely.makes me want to build a forge.
-
Hey Stingman, hope I did'nt offend you, was'nt meaning to. Just pointing out that you bowyers are a hard act to follow ;)
-
Those knives lot sweet killr duck... Hope they're headed my way. Awesome job.
Jon
-
Think nothing of it, buddy. If you knew whose name i drew you would realize how intimidated I am by this build. This bow is gonna have to be top shelf for me to feel ok about sending it. In fact I'm not sure I can even pull it off, but like I said I can always send rocks.
Scott
-
i with you Scott.i am not tring to be a show off.i got really excited that something was finally working out for me.i don't have alot of money.i saved to get my materials.this is my first trade and i wanted to do it right.i am not tring to out do anyone and i don't care if i get anything in return.someone said that i didn't have to set the bar so high,i wasn't tring to.i didn't know there was a bar.i am very sorry if i offended any one by posting stuff.i sure didn't mean to.i just wanted to do the best i could.i love everyone on here and don't want anyone to have ill feelings towards me.it is not a contest,it is a simple trade.no one should feel bad about how much money or skill they have.send something from the heart and there won't be one person on this site that will be disappointed.we are all good people here.love you all,Steve
-
Relax seabass, they were just ribbing ya, tellin you you did a heck of a job.... now if only I can get my craftsmanship on par with yours... :D ;)
-
thanks Sleek.i don't want anyone mad at me.i am just tring to do a good job.i got excited.
-
seabass,
I for one think that you are doing a fantastic job and i don't think anyone else meant to infer otherwise. I'm just hoping you got me!!!
I'm involved in my first trade also and am going to do my damndest to put forth the best effort afforded me from all of my past talents.
You don't have to apologize to anybody.
Finding information on my go to guy hasn't been the easiest but I have a few faint clues. If what I do is wrong then he can trade the goods to someone else. No Biggie!!!
It's a Christmas exchange and Christmas is for kids. And let's face it, we're just a bunch of grown up kids.
Your guy is going to be one happy camper and I hope mine is too.
-
Stringman, I looked back at the list of participants. There are some pretty awesome bowyers in this trade. Some would initimate me, also. BUT, I've had the pleasure of meeting quite a few of these guys and know they'd be happy knowing the gift was from the heart and they know the struggles a piece a wood can give you. The others, I feel are friends I haven't met in person, YET. So don't sweat it.
Heck, any of us here would be tickle to get the bow as it right now. It looks awesome.
I"m tied up with personal commitment (i.e. building a haunted forest) for another 10 days then I'm to work on this exchange. I'll be attempting something I've never made before, but has been on my mind for a couple years. It should be interesting. I'll post picture of my progress.

really got me interested now hedgeapple, Bub
-
:)
-
Hey Stringman, I'd take that box of rocks if you choose, because I've seen youre work with stone! ;)
Tracy
-
I guess you'll have to wait and see what happens, just like everyone else. :o
Scott
-
A little more heat work this morning then glued on a bit of mesquite to build up the handle. There is a bit more than a 1/4" difference between the glue line and the belly of the bow, so hopefully I won't have any issues with it popping back off.
Narrowed up the last 10" on the tips to remove excess weight. Now I'll give it a day or so to cure/stabilize before checking final tiller and shooting it in. If all goes well I will work on tips and skins this weekend (fingers crossed!)
Scott
-
looks like its comming along nicely string man. Mines still in the development stages. Im still roughing it out.
-
Nah, you got plenty 'o time.
Scott
-
That mesquite is going to be a nice touch!!!
My first Christmas candidate for the exchange is done ... on to plan B :)

-
The hype builds as more people post things and as it gets closer to the trade date. Things are heating up ;D
-
Heck yeah I haven't started yet but will soon can't make up my mind in what to make
-
I was wavering between a bow and a knapped knife, i decided on the bow mostly because i want to give the best ive got.(knapping hasnt gotten that good yet) So basicly i want to make the person happy with something i know i can make decently well.
-
Some great stuff being made. I will consider myself extremely lucky no matter what i recieve. Anyway i finaly got started on my plan A. Thought i would post a teaser.
-
i am getting excited about this trade.i can't wait for more pics to roll in.keep up the good work guys.
-
well i got the blade tempered yesterday and started to get the handle ready and of course changed my mind 3 or 4 times first it was osage and junper than it was osage and russian olive then it was osage and hickory then i finally made up my mind and decided to go with osage and cocobolo now i have to do my least favorite part >:( waiting for glue to dry >:(
-
i hate waiting for glue to dry on anything! my current build for my cousin has a brown paper backing waiting to dry...torture! I will finish shaping my trade bow soon and then post pics.
-
You guys are making some mighty fine gifts.I hope you all got my name. LOL. It is going to be a long wait waiting to mail my gift out to. ( zip )
-
The handle is on and shaped.

Now I need to get the tiller a little closer. Can you tell me what you're seeing? I think I'm seeing it but want to make sure so I nail it.

-
looks to me that both limbs look pretty even but are a little bit stiff midlimb
-
A hinge out the left limb fade?
-
Lots of cool goodies!!!!
What you gonna do with that hide turtle???
-
Make a christmas present. ;)
-
Stringman the limb looks to be bending a lot more at the fade than the right limb......what I see from my eye.
-
I guess I can add some teaser pics as well. I'm waiting on some bigger jaws for my lathe chuck so I can turn it soon. I glued it together from curly oak and Bolivian rosewood pen blanks I had laying around. Titebond 3 so it's waterproof. ;)

-
Oh Mr. Thompson! What are you up to? There are several things that come to mind, some archery related and serveral not. Hmmm!
-
Fellas, glued up some bow blanks (one is gonna be for ________) the bottom 2 are the ones for that person......here's the question I'm gonna need to use one of the lower 2 bows........so if you had a choice would you prefer [A] a reflexed modified american flatbow, or the modified Mollegabet?
figured that the unofficial poll would make up my mind for me.... 8)
rich
-
Not to be a troublemaker, but somehow always stirring that pot..... Rich, I would take ANYTHING you laid your hands on!
-
That Molle looks pretty cool, I'd probably vote for that one, but not by much. All your bows would make anyone happy!
-
I would love any of them but that molle is pretty sweet!
Jon
-
Molle would be my first pick out of those 2.
-
Ive never shot or made a molle.
So I'd go with the molle.
It's a popular design and a bit tricky to make.
Always a crowd pleaser.
-
I'm afraid I would go Molle as well.
-
Not to be a troublemaker, but somehow always stirring that pot..... Rich, I would take ANYTHING you laid your hands on!
I'm with JW BUT??? I have never shot a modified Mollegabet.... soooooo I might just lean that way a tad :)
-
Well I'm going to be difficult and go with the modified american flatbow.
-
I vote flatbow ;D
-
I'd go molle you make some nice ones
-
Don't get me to lyin! ??? Whichever you choose will be a good un. You can count on it!! ;)
-
Rich....whatever you make your recipient will be happy with it.
-
OK guys thanks....guess it will be the modified Mollegabet,Thanks also Fred and Bryce
rich
-
Oh Mr. Thompson! What are you up to? There are several things that come to mind, some archery related and serveral not. Hmmm!
Well, you're gonna just have to wait a bit and see. This has been on my "to try" list for a while. Hope the recipient doesn't mind being a guinea pig of sorts.
Rick, my vote is for the molle. Oops, just saw I was a bit late on that. I like how it turned out anyway.
-
i'd like one of your mollies.but that is just me.anything you make Rich, would make me smile.
-
Well it looks like it won't be coming to Bryce or me. Dagnabbit :'(
-
Well hell Fred, that is NOT my style of bow that one could wind up anywhere buddy..... >:D
rich
-
Rich,i said molle because i have never had one but always wanted one.i am sure your flat bow would be stunning aswell.guys, what ever one Rich makes will be a stunner.he is a true craftsman.
-
Oh I'm back in the running then!!! 8) I like mine long for around 52#28.5 ;D
I've got a few in the works and am trying to get a couple finished for the exchange also.
My guy looks to shoot the same specs as I do so if one of them works out for me He's going to get one from a newbie~~~
-
rich from the experiance i have from shooting a mollie and then the bow that you made me, it dont matter, mollie's shoot great and so does my war bow, if you make it it's a winner in my book, Bub
-
Well it looks like it won't be coming to Bryce or me. Dagnabbit :'(
That was my thought, but then again he could be trying to fool one of us! :o
-
Mine trade gift is just about done...Ill definitely be shipping early!!!
-
Are you aloud to ship early ? or do you have to wait till the ship date?
-
Mine trade gift is just about done...Ill definitely be shipping early!!!
ship no earlyer than Dec. 15, Bub
-
Yeah that is what I thought buddy.
-

-
Dang! i really like the look of that one Bill! Nice job over all!
-
Oh Mr. Thompson! What are you up to? There are several things that come to mind, some archery related and serveral not. Hmmm!

Looking good Turtle!
Scott
-
that looks nice turtle! would that by chance be an art young style side quiver as described in traditional bowhunter a couple months ago? well i got the knife almost finished i just need to finish sanding the handle and put a finish on it and of course the sheath, i think on the sheath i'm gonna do a snakes skin inlay in the shape of an arrowhead or something but i can't decide between rat snake, prarie rattler or timber rattler what would you choose?
-
Yes it is. Although the article was titled Making Saxton Pope's Quiver.
-
woops! i had my names mixed up
-
Turtle that looks GREAT!
-
Sweet little knife HickoryBill. Sure would be nice if someone would do a tutorial on knapping glass ;)
check out youtube, lots of tut's on glass and obs knapping, learn it better seeing it done than reading and still pics, Bub
-
looking good guys.
-
the knife is finished i may put another coat or 2 of finish on it but i don't think it is needed. it's about 7 3/4" long with osage and cocobolo handle and pins made of antler, now i need to make the sheath. i may do a bit af file work on the spine later
-
This is getting good!
Here are the bows in the works at the moment. I will see how each turns out and see what fits the recipients specs best.
Ocean spray, yew, rawhide backed osage, and sinew backed yew.

-
Here is plan A for my end of the trade. I'm not sure if it will work out or not. I got the bark and sapwood removed today. Tomorrow I'll chase a ring and see what it looks like. I might have to go to another stave. There has been some nice work posted so far. Looks like there are going to be a lot of happy traders.
-
OO,
I dont think Ive seen you with a straight stave, not once, ever.
-
Oh, Clint has some straight staves....or had some. I have evidence!

-
Thought I might get in on this. Please excuse the mess.
Works in progress for the trade
Left to right
Cherry barked cascara (almost finished), 2 Yew bows, osoberry, Plum paddle bow, ocean spray, cascara(huge knot) and the always reliable Vinemaple. :)
I still am unsure which one i will send off. :o

-
So many cool trades going on ;D so many people should be happy this Christmas!
-
Plan A was a little narrow for what I wanted so I moved on to another stave. This one was cut in 09 and is a little straighter. I got the bark and sapwood off of it today and took it down to a single ring for most of the length. I want to go about 3 rings deeper to get to a thicker one. If this stave doesn't work out, I'll get one from the straight pile.

Here is one of my teaser shots. More to come later.

-
Bryce, you never now ;)
Nice teaser pic you posted by the way. I would be happy to receive any one of those bows.

-
Yah never know seabass ;)
-
Bryce,if you ever want to trade a stick let me know.i have primo osage.
-
Wow I haven't been on here much and didn't get signed up as the list of things to get finished for people is just to long and feel I need to get my commitments done first. Looking over some of the projects sure has me thinking I'm missing all the fun. You all are putting together some incredible gifts. Well done.
PS. Steve, sure like your leather work. Looking good!
-
thanks Keenan.i'll make you something anytime brother.
-
Hi Y'all,
Some Fine looking work showing on this thread...
Been head down hard charging for a month now playing catch up.
Penance for a Krazy Off The Wall fishing trip out of Venice, Louisiana the end of September.
But I'm back on track with most of my projects.
Decided to build an Atlatl and dartz for my recipeint.
Was just about ready to wrap it up when I broke the carved nock cup off of it in testing... :o
Think I was asking a piece of antler to do more than it was willing to do.
No harm though, drilled out the antler, carving a new cup, should be back on track by weeks end.
I'll try to get a photo up in the next day or so.

Sure are some nice projects being worked up for this years Christmas Exchange. 8) Up until this morning I had no idea what I was gonna make for the Exchange. I had the day off work due to weather so I started looking around and found a partial hide of leather under the bed(my leather storage place). I've made a few of these Plains style quivers over the years so I already had the pattern. I cut it out, punched the stitching holes and hand stitched it together today.
This quiver can be worn either left or right handed by simply removing the strap and pouch and putting them of the other side of the quiver. Both are held on with thongs. Anyway here is a sneak peek at my offering for the 2012 Christmas Exchange...

Someones going to be happy Pat! nice work!
-
OH Boy that is sweet!
Jon
-
Nice job, Pat!!
-
very nice work Pat.i really like your button on the pouch.
-
I am really starting to feel like a grubby hitchhiker getting to ride in a Rolls Royce when I look at some of the stuff going out on trades. Wow, it really shows that around here when asked to give, people dig deep to do their level best and never scrimp!
That quiver would be ever so welcome at my house, Pat...I just realized that it's ten years since I started this trail and I really haven't got a quiver! I have a canvas tube that sometimes I stuff arrows into, but as the guys in Iowa learned this spring, I generally stuff 'em in my back pocket and spend lotsa time looking for 'em later!
-
Pat you make the nicest quivers I seen. Especially your basket quivers, but your leather looks just as prestine. Well done
-
That's a heck of a quiver Pat. Someone will sure be pleased.
-
Thanks everyone. Hand stitching leather is one of my favorite things to do.
btw, the medallions I cut from a piece of mesquite that Cipriano sent me and the stiffener is a sourwood shaft.
-
here's the knife and the sheath. the sheath is made from some vegy tan leather from Gus and the snakeskin is from Cipriano. i really like that quiver Pat those mesquite buttons look really cool
-
Wow! nice duck!
-
Sweet Jesus Pat, that's finer than frog hair, somebody's gonna be lovin that for sure.....Hope it goes to somebody with some respect cause a hillbilly like me would have it in the deer woods for absolute sure ::)
rich
-
Finally got the old saw blade tamed and mated to an antler tine, and decided this chunk o whitetail backbone would make an okay stand. Thats all I've got done so far,got somethin else goin too.
-
i like it! looking good!
-
Wow! fine work so far,,makes my first idea look weak,! so im adding another gift!! Id be proud to have anything pictured !!! 8) 8)
-

-
Finally making progress on starting and finishing the gift il post pics of the first piece of the box il be sending when i get home
-
Unfortunately, I don't have too many specs on my guy.
Is 185lbs at 23" okay for you?
And left handed?
Some how, I think not...
-
Here is a small tast of the gift box i am working on some fresh deer jerky i made from the buck i shot last sat (http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee451/bloodmoonwidow/DAF51A93-E966-4543-A327-98E27C5E092C-2385-00000203D19B1956.jpg)
-
JERKY!!! Now there is a gift that should come this way!! :P
-
Alright, Heres my progress so far on my trade item. Its hickory and has a bigish knot, i will have to plug them because they have both rotted. Its 66 inches, 1.75 in at the fades. last 15 inches taper to 1/2 inch tips. its got a bit of prop twist, so if i do flip the tips it may be worth my time straitening the prop out. It is still REALLY thick, like 1.5 inches thick(maybe more) i wont give specifics on goal weight and draw though(confidential ) i have a surprise at the end that i plan on playing into this bow.
-
looking good so far muffin.i am glad you posted pics.i check for pics every day.i wanna see more.
-
Thanks! i will post more maybe tomorrow(if i do any work on it tomorrow). I have thinned it since i posted pics. i will probably move on to a draw knife and a rasp for that knot(the knot is much smaller the closer it is to the back so its not going to be very big.)

Here is another pice for the box a smoke glass skinner

Nope not tv glass its called smoke glass it looks like tv tho
-
nice blade Sterling.
-
tv glass or not, that's a nice blade, Bub

*UPDATE* The bow is coming along nicely. It is just barely bending with a lot of weight put on it.(not in string stage yet) i was able to reduce the knot area to the point where one knot is gone, and the other one is becoming much smaller(about 1/8 inch diameter hole) My next steps are to heat treat the limbs and flip the tips a bit. After doing that i will thin the limbs to floor tiller and then begin tillering. There is a surprise at the end that i will post when i am nearly done with it. this rough out of the bow looks extra promising!
-
can't wait to see i muffin.
-
Sweet cant wait to see pics :)

Spent some time on my contribution today. Sawing boards, glueing, clamping, drilling, glueing in plugs, sanding some more. Last nite I sewed some leather, drilled holes in antler, and threaded leather thongs. Tonight or tomorrow will involve sewing some canvas and leather. Later still, either woodcarving or woodburning. Then I will have to melt and cast wax, and a few other assorted insundry things.
I imagine some things folks are doing are pretty close to shipping. I can't wait to see the excited postings when people start unwrapping gifts.
Maybe we should all wait until the last person on the list receives their package before we ALL open them. >:D
-
man i've hardly got a start on mine, better get a move on, Bub
-
Im done just got to get some pics up! :) maybe tomorow

DAMN!!! I really missed out this year. Ding Dang 'ol job. :( You guys are going above and beyond. Love that stuff you all's makin!! dpgratz

Ok I must confess a failure of sorts... I was trying to delude myself into thinking that the bow I was working on (which came in light) would be adequate to send off. However, after receiving good counsel from a friend I have decided to remake and hope for better results. I brought 2 staves along and am in the final stages of assembly, now, on what I hope to be my gift for the exchange. I still feel confident I can meet the deadline, but my butt is in high 3 right now.
Here's a little peek:

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( It broke! i dont know exactly what happened but it broke :'( I was heating some reflex into the tips(using a heat gun and jig) i had a small amount of weight on the other end helping it to slowly reflex as i applied heat. I thought it was going well, then crack! If i can salvage it let me know what thoughts you have. otherwise im going to use it as a test to see how well boiling the tips work...
-
Aww now that sucks :'( :'(
-
that sucks bad muffin.i was hoping that bow was headed my way.stuff happens.
-
look's like a fair amount of force was needed to do that, dont need to boil, just steam for 45 min per 1/2" of thickness, then you have to hustle getting it bent before it cools. as you havn't made a hole lot of bows maybe a simple flatbow for this exchange, not a bunch of time if ya get halfway thru a build and get a k-boom, whatever you decide your guy should be happy that you did your best, now all that aside, time to get scrapeing, Bub
-
yeah, i think ill set this bow aside and instead make something else. I might superglue and wrap with sinew that limb and use it for myself if it turns out. if not its a learning experience. It did fail on the belly so it could have broken because of the surform rasp marks that were there, maybe if i had made it smooth until after i had bent it, it might have made it.

I am at a loss as to what im going to do for my recipient now! that was all working in my favor until a few hrs ago. Maybe arrows? idk.

Since one of the rules is that everything has to be home made that may be slightly....problematic, so to speak.
-
well if you made the money it would be "homemade"... but i think that either way, i don't have the skill or materials to send "100$ bills" for a gift ::) I do think however, that i could try something else. If all else fails would any of you be disappointed to receive this?
-
i wouldnt mind receiving that
-
;D Thanks for your response! I believe very few of you on here have pvc bows(because this is a primitive forum) But if worse comes to worse i was thinking that this wouldnt be a bad alternative. Its close to 50 lbs although the tips are 1 inch wide and deep.
-
as long as it's hand made muffin, i've made some of those, gave one to a buddy that was wanting to try mounted shooting, figured if he wants to keep it up i'll make him a wood shorty, those thinga are great for bow fishing dont matter if it gets wet, Bub
-
yeah, only major weakness they have is the sun... 100% hand made(minus materials) but in general i liked how it shoots. I have some touch ups to do on the handle and i need to make a string for it thats more official. I think it might be a nice gift weather its bowfishing or target practice or horseback shooting.
-
Now a guy could really have some fun with one of those...
-
I wouldn't complain about receiving it. Looks nice.

I shouldn't have whipped this bow out so quick I keep looking at it, gonna be hard to let go lol. The smiling face of ________ will more than make up for it:)
-
One of the bows I am working on is coming around to the recipients specs, but man am I getting attached to it. But like you said Bryce, that smile will make it all worth it.
-
:'( No pics eh? maybe a peek??? ah well. Im sure the recipient will post pics...*tells myself its ONLY 35 more days to go...*

Ok, finally got my idea nailed down and in progress. I'm making my giftee a shooting ensemble. Modified English Archers bag, bow case and a surprise item. I'll post some pics as I make more progress and my IT person ( wife ) speaks to me again - kind of pissed her off this am, ;D. Course when dealing with women, that aint hard to do, sometimes all you have to do is exist >:D.

Course when dealing with women, that aint hard to do, sometimes all you have to do is exist >:D.

agd68 you nailed that one & I thought I was the only one that had that problem.

Ok, finally got my idea nailed down and in progress. I'm making my giftee a shooting ensemble. Modified English Archers bag, bow case and a surprise item.
Oh wow! I won't be upset if I am the recipient!
I spent an hour today on the woodworking part of my gift. I'm using NO powertools, as usual. Cutting a board off straight and all is more difficult than tillering a character laden osage airplane propeller! The wooden boards were pieced together nicely with pegs and glue, no modern fasteners. Now to decide how to finish the wood and put the Primitive Archery Magazine's logo on it! There will be pics...but just teasers for now!
-
Ok...... Wheres the pics? >:(
-
Nearly finished with mine. I think --------really wanted a bow, but cant go into how come that didn't happen without givin something away......so here's what he's gettin instead. Figured he could allways trade it for a bow, well maybe. Sure hope he likes it.
rich
almost forgot.....the small bagf is a tabacco bag, but not for the owner or his friends. It contains cut tobacco but it's for the Paw-gwa-tchaw-nish-naw-boy......say what?

Bub, You make this sound easy!!
I'm trying the multitasking approach, working on 1/2 a dz different things and hope some of them turn out good enough.

Both i painted in the past few years
-
skyarrow, i'd say the mountains but i would be proud to hang either in my house. hey bub that war club is awsome!
-
Sky both of those are fantastic, my favorite is the mountain scene tho. Bubby that warclub is nice I cant wait to see it finished.
Grady
-
I can't pick, Sky, but that little girl of yours is cute as a button! Either of those would look good on my wall.
Scott
-
Both those paintings are incredible! She's really a talented artist for being so young! ;)
-
thank's guys, i'll post some pics in a few when it's done,
i like the ocean pic sky, pretty model too, Bub
-
Yes Sir,
They both look nice... but I'm partial to Waves and Water...
Skyarrow, your Little Girl looks to be around the age of my two boys.
21 months and 3 1/2 years... My First and Last... :)
-gus
-
I am partial to anything Bob Ross. Nicely done.
-
I'd say the best work of art is the middle one. But of the paintings, may be my Maritime blood showing, I like the sea scape best. Bang up job on both though.
-
Getting close . I am getting ready to package up my gift and ship it off to ............
There has been alot of fine handcrafted eye candy to look at on the way.
-
just a reminder, dont ship before Dec 15th, and no later that Jan 15th, Bub

Ohh man that is nice.
-
looking good Bub.it is almost time to ship and i can't wait.everything i have seen is awesome.you guys are doing a great job.lots of talent on this site.
-
I've been working on a couple of different staves for bows but for me it seems to be a futile effort. Looks like my guys going to get a stave, some back sinew, and a plains style quiver full of arrows.
-
i'd be happy with any one of those fred, let alone ALL of them, Bub
-
Man Fred! That is a nice kit, right there!
-
Matt in reference to "The wood speaks to you. You just have to listen."
My Dad once said to me, "God gave you two ears and only one mouth, there must be a good reason for it, so why don't you ponder on that for awhile".
I keep on looking and listening to that wood and I am getting better but I'm just not there yet.
I know my guy can work this down but he's going to have to do the finesse work himself. Hopefully, if my instincts are correct, he'll have some nice well matched arrows to enjoy while he's breaking it in.
-
i would be plum tickled to get anything i've seen here
-
i think it is awesome Fred.i'd take that stuff in a minute.you better believe that.
-
Fred, that not only looks like a great set, it's awful generous of you to give so much. I'm sure the recipient will be super pleased!!
Scott
-
Thats a nice gift set fred
-
To be honest I haven't seen anything posted here that I wouldn't be very please if Santa brought to my house. I'm in the shop today working on my gifts. OH SO MUCH FUN.
Dave
-
Man, wishing I would have gotten in on this. I was feeling so busy at the time but I think I could have managed it. Awesome stuff! I'll do it next year.
-
Your missin out bud :P
-
At this past Tennessee Classic, Stringstretcher was so kind to gift me a dozen sourwood shafts. He's wondered what I've done with them. Don't worry Chris, The other 6 are for myself. ;)
This was a fun project; 6 Sourwood shafts sanded and semi-straightened. (Had to leave a little crooked or they'd look too much like hardware store dowels). Self nocks reinforced with osage splints and wrapped with whitetail back sinew. Fletched with goose feathers. Each shaft has a different snake species wrap. There is prairie rattler, black racer, copperhead, rat snake and not so certain of the others. Tipped with stone points of chert also, sinew wrapped. Kinda worried about shipping them. Gotta pack them extra well. Hope he/she likes 'em.
-
You sure made those pieces of wood proud Matt. I think I will just send you all my sourwood to make mine. Awesome arrows. And I am sure someone will be very very please. Great job.
-
Matt, those look too nice to shoot. I'd be hanging those on my wall for all to see. They are stunning!!!
-
Those arrows are amazing!!! Wow! I love the idea of the snake skin wrapped tail ends. If you don't mind to tell, what are the fletchings made of?
OneBow
-
Holy cow Matt those look fantastic!!!
-
WOW, thats a collectors set of arrows.
-
I'll take em!!:) bueatiful!
-
Thank you,
Chris - Especially for the shafts.
Fred - Yeah, not sure if I could shoot 'em either
Onebow - Goose feathers. Cut them myself with a feather chopper
Coaster - Sinew cured, final tiller tonight and this weekend ;)
Wildcat - Thank you. You're very kind.
Bryce - Thank you, sir. I forgot who I made them for. I'll have to check back in my PM's.
-
Matt, those are very easy on the eye!
If you can't find that email, just send em to me and I will distribute them to the local deer population (in measured doses!) >:D
Scott
-
Well here's my gift, not quite done I'm gonna add some more flashy details but she VM. thread wrapped ends. I got the base wrap done on the handle, and im having a hard time choosing a color for the leather grip.Coal leather dye on the back. Gonna add some red glowing cherry bark and have the leather dye kind of peering through the cracks in the bark. But here's where I'm at.

rich
-
Great looking gifts you all are making. Well done!
-
I'm getting pretty excited for next Saturday when I can get my gift shipped out.
-
Here is a peek at what im working on. Its a Heat Treated Red Oak Sinew Backed Crossbow. If all goes well i will have a fully functional crossbow in a few weeks. The limbs i tillered and it looks like it will get to 14 inches maybe 15 if i have a sinew back on it. Im hoping for maybe 50-60 lbs out of this although just getting it to the point where it will shoot would be great.
Also, would Knox gelatin work for applying the sinew? if so where can i get it and is there a link maybe as to how you would need to prepare it to apply the sinew? where would i be able to get it? Is there a specific type that i should look for?
-
Good news to report on the crossbow limbs. They stiffened up, so now with the sinew it should be about 70-90 lbs when its finished, could wind up at less, but im hoping that it will be rather heavy.
-
Unflavored gelatin can be purchsed in your grocery store right next to the flavored Jello. Preperation is simply adding water and low heat until you have the desired consistency. Two packets of crystals and about half a cup of water...more or less to suit your preferences.
-
ok, sweet. I will apply a primer coat like a lot of people on the internet have suggested. It apparently allows for a better adhesion to the back of the bow. Also, another question, If i want the backing to be superior quality, should i get the sinew fibers really fine? how fine would be about right? I should be able to start the sinewing process tomorrow.
-
comb out the sinew and get it down to fine fibers.it will be alot easier to deal with.after that bundle it into fibers of the same length.get all the bundles ready to go.this will help alot.are you using hide glue?
-
Im using Konx gelatin. I have applied the first coating of the glue to the back as a primer. Ill get to work on the sinews sometime soon
Also, is it possible to speed up the overall process of drying and curing the sinew??? i have a heater that can heat the air quite nicely, i also can add a fan to move the air since stagnate air you dont get the moisture removed as fast.
-
Don't dry it with heat. Just let it sit in a room where the temperature doesn't fluctuate too much. Usually I put sinew on in the bathroom with the shower on. Get it nice and misty. Then once the 1st course is down hit it with the blow dryer on "cool" to gel the glue then I let it sit in a room that's about 69 deg. For 3-4 days then apply another. Up to 3 courses then let cure for a month.
Very good results.
This is a process you do not want to rush.
-
hmm. then i may have to get going on the stock and all while im at it. I figure if this one goes bad too then i may just need to leave well enough alone and do something i can finish for my recipient. Ill do my best to finish it :)
Also, just curious, i can still use a fan between sinew layers to allow for more thorough drying right?
-
I leave sinew dry on its own for at least a month if not more.
-
Air movement helps the sinew/glue dry quicker but like Bryce said you do not want to rush this process. The sinew will continue to dry over a year and maybe more. Some of the ancient Chinese bows would cure for 10 years or more before they were used.
-
Ok, so air movement, would it be ok to string it up after at least 2 weeks or so? I would like this to be my gift but if its going to take a long time i may just find something else.
-
1 whole month
-
:'( ok, one whole month. This is going to be tough....
-
It is tough. Just put it somewhere where your not gonna see it all the time.
I once waiting a year... Well worth it!
-
I did a month between courses and 3 courses then a week before the snake skin and another month before shooting it.
-
For my gift I decided to use the sister stave to a bow I sent Pat B. It ended up about 56" ttt and have not put a scale on it but I would say 55 to 60 lbs at 26". My recipient has a longer draw length than 26 but I thought they might enjoy a shorter bow for a blind or the brush. Simple jute handle and oil with wax finish. I will try to get 1/2 doz arrows done to go with it.
-
love that bow and, i have yet to try a short bow but im tempted
-
Ready to ship, just gotta wait a few days now!!!!!! Made this tiny lil guy to go along with the Bowie style i posted the other day. I used a deer tine that fit the case skinned copper head tail, the metal is the same as i make my trade points carved deer tine with a tiny lil snake head. Now ill just box it all up and send it to _____________ ____________ in the great state of ___________________ .
-
Oh, that's a nice looking knife right there!

I love that war club. That thing is awesome. Great job on it.
-
thanks guy's, hope so and so likes it, Bub
jon it's a sick weapon form a sick individual, at least that's what my wife said >:D
-
I tried working on my gift last weekend but the materials I had on hand didn't work the way I wanted them to, OR I couldn't make them work the way I wanted them to. haha SO, I ordered materials that will work (a clue--3" and 4" dia. bamboo) GRIN
I plan to make a couple of these items for myself, also and a friend or 2. More clues--this item is produced commercially in a plastic version. But, I REFUSE to use the plastic ones with my primitive bow.
-
I didn't get in on this trade due to prior commitments, but I have to comment on Bub's war club. It is so fine you ought to send some guitar strings with that "axe". ;D

Here's a sneak peak at my gift. Hoping to be finished shape by tomorrow or Thursday with a hollow grind on it. Then should be doing handle work by the weekend. Overall length is about 9" and the blade length is 4". Thinking of putting either a nice zebrawood handle, or I have some bloodwood or Jobillo that would look good as a handle, we'll see.

Started with the fire kit,After seeing the nice stuff you guys were making I decided that wasnt enough! So I added a crown stag knife,,then I thought that Mrs @*&($ might like one to match. Made the scabbards out of rawhide, dyed brown, rubbed a bunch with saddle soap.Blades are an old tablesaw blade. The fire kit pouch is rawhide as well,I decided on a fericium rod mounted in a small piece of antler, and striker also in antler.Added cotton balls, charcloth and steel wool. Hope Mr. ^(*)$#% can get some use out of it!! :) There are 2 pics,I almost forgot how to post,,Also in the fire kit is some peices of fat lighter pine.
-
WOW Rick, that is awesome.i think that is gonna make someone real happy.

nice looking bow. I to hope it is headed to Ohio

Ok guys, I know I am running out of time, but I now have the time after a few unexpected things came up to work on this exchange. I started, got half way through, and then had to stop. Back on full force and 100% confident I will make the deadline.
I am having a hard time choosing which one to build, so decided to mention all that I am building right now.
So, I have an osage stave mostly formed with a half inch hole in the midlimb and a 1/4 hole below it. It will have to be an elb profile if this bow is to be made as its only 1 inch wide to make my 45 lb minimum at 27 inches of draw. Will also probably wind up bending in the handle to relieve limb stress around the hole.
Second bow up is a slippery elm, pyramid style same stats, no character at all.
Last is an elm that I cannot ID, but smells like sugar water... wonderful sweet smell to it. It will have little character, a high crown, and again have the above stats.
So... thats what I have in the works right now....
-
WOW!! I finally got mine shipped!!! and I also recieved a wonderfull gift Thanks Jeff W
-
I spent 6 to 7 hours in the workshop yesterday trying the coax my gift out of a 4" dia bamboo. The bamboo won the first round. But I have a new stradegy for today, after a quick trip to the hardware store. :)
-
Sent my gift out Friday, got message it was received. Hope Everyone has a great Christmas.
-
Got mine the other day from Sterling,Thank you,it was a cool surprise! Shipped mine today! DANG!! wrong thread!

Got a little bit of time over the last few days so finally got mine finished up today. I'll get it mailed later this week.
It's a wooden tape-on bow fishing reel (the first I've made). The woods are curly oak and Bolivian rosewood. Glued together with titebond 3 and finished with spar urethane. Metal fittings are all stainless.

Glad they arrived undamaged! Hope you enjoy them and if you ever need more turkey feathers down the road I'll be sure to send you some more. Have a merry Christmas!!
-
Well I'm not sure happend exactly whether it be the difference in mc between my house and the shop.
But I took a full draw shot to add to my bow portfolio and I noticed a differently tillered bow then before...so I had to make a few tweaks I was not gonna let the best bow ive made leave without being as perfect as possible. Just when I had a perfect finish.... Figures.
Now the tiller is fixed and she'll be ready to go ASAP.

Wow!!!
Great gifts!!!!
Those points, and that real beautiful!!!
-
Nice patch job on that stain Bryce. If you hadn't of posted the pics, nobody would have ever known.
I hope to be applying tru-oil to my gift by this weekend ;)
-
Should I paint this or just a clear finish?
http://m1292.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/darwin20101/IMAG0327_zpsd7cfeeb9.jpg.html?o=0
It's a returning boomerang and is just about through testing but I can't decide if I want to paint it or not. One advantage of panting it is that it stands out a little better and is easier to find if it lands in the grass.
If I do paint it I'm thinking of doing a WW1 or 2 fighter plane theme I've done a few like that before and they have turned out pretty cool
I hope yall can see that I'm haveing picture troubles
-
paint it, bub

So in my typical style of waiting until the last minute, I haven't shipped my prezzy yet. I was hoping to send what was going to be my first successful selfbow from some elm I've had seasoning for 3 years, but after about 5 sessions with the heat gun treating and straightening, I had her to about 20 inches and the back let loose. I decided that a gift was not the right thing to experiment on, so settled on some other ideas instead.
I finished this sucker up the other night, although after seeing it complete, the veg-tanned leather that I made the lace and fringe out of looks a little too pink for my liking... I might unlace the whole works and give the veg-tan some type of oily treatment to darken it up some. What do you guys think. Should I just leave it alone?
I gotta work away from home for a week but hope to have a bit of time when I get back to finish something else up to throw in the package. I hope my recipient doesn't mind the wait. I know the deadline isn't quite here yet, but I really wanted to get this out sooner rather than later.
-
looks good to me
-
Fine looking quiver.
-
Nothing wrong with that! Nice work!
Scott
-
I like the contrast Cam, plus it will darken up with age/dirt, Bub
-
Cam I think someone will enjoy it just as it is :)
-
Thanks guys, I guess I'll leave it alone :) I asked my wife what she thought of it, she says "Well, it's not really my style, but I'm sure some of your primitive buddies will like it." :embarassed: :'(
-
yep she's right
-
Howdy Y'all!
Hope everybody had a Merry Christmas, Rockin Solstice, Happy Hanukkah or Winter Holiday!
I have to apologise, I've been outa the loop for the past few weeks...
But I'm back in the saddle again, nose to the Grind Stone.
With that said, please mark me down as received.
I got the Awesome Blade and Sheath from Killer Duck!!
It's a Real Beauty!
I can't Thank You Enough Mr. Duck!
I can't wait to get her into action!
I should have my gift finished by this weekend, and plan to ship next Monday.
I Apologize for the delay.
Wishing Everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Almost finished. I really had to slow down progress due to no time off over Christmas, and fighting bronchitis. But will be out in time. So I am now to the point that I usually do my finish sanding, shoot it in, lay a nice stain, tru oil, and call her done, The problem is, I dont have the strength to shoot it in. So please, Mr. XXXXXXXXXXX, please wear safety glasses and only pull back outdoors for the first 100 or so shots. I will be amazed if the bow fails, but you never know. Especially when changing temps, and humidity levels.
I have built this entire bow from cut down to finish with only a knife, ( I cheated to split it with a bandsaw. ) It does as a result have a rough finish. I dont wanna put sand paper over it as that spoils the one tool idea. I am gonna leave it to Mr. XXXXXXXXXXX to put a finish stain on it and do how he wants to treat it. I figure that he already has so many very nice bows giving him another shiny to purty to get durty bow would serve no purpose.
I want this bow to be the one he grabs when he is going out in crap weather, rough conditions, be able to toss around and not scuff the finish, rollin round his truck bed, walkin stick, scrape the poo off yer shoe, go to ole trusty, prop the hood up on yer truck when the garden hose for a heater hose replacement blows off, how deep is that hole anyways, pinata bustin, caint find my jack handle, gimme a length of string to tie this hose back on, back scratchin, impromptu fishin rod, grab the end of the bow lil timmy and stay away from the well from now on, clothes hanger to dry your wet clothes out propped up between the two rear windows in your truck, hold my beer and watch this sh!t, bow that will last forever, and if it dont, thats ok, it wasnt pretty anyway, I will just make him another. What do yall think bout that?
-
Sleek and Gus, are you going to post pics of your work? or do we have to wait till it gets to the recipient to see it?!?!
-
I may, not sure yet...
-
:/ you sure you not sure??? ;D ::)
-
Well, are you hinting at something? It will have to wait till my wife is done... She is doing the dishes and has the spanish music up loud, so I gadda leave her alone. She is my photographer is why....
-
Ok, no rush ::) im one of those oglers ;)
-
Still plugging away, right down to the wire :) I just finished another piece to throw in the box, and am going to try to whip up a sheath for it today. The handle was made out of some maple burl from my dad's farm. There are some crazy colors in it, some browns, pinks, and reds.
-
oh man is that sweet or what!
-
Wow, just WOW!
That thing will fit me beautifully!! >:D
Scott
-
You did that burl proud. ;)

I'm Finally done...
Had to do a bit of Refinish work on the Atlatl...
My four year old put a Thumb Print in the Tru Oil, right in the middle of the Dart Rest that was too obvious to leave... So had to sand it off and refinish it...
Heading to the Post Office just after noon.
I'll get some photos up this afternoon when I get back from running.

Well I finally got the strength to let her go. I apologize to the recipient, for taking so long to ship the item.
I teared up at the post office. The girlfriend said," it's not like it's a child or something."
"It is actually." I replied.
Hope ___________ likes it.
-Pinecone
Bryce I understand completely.... When I came back to the house after running some errands I noticed a tube on the porch. I read the address and my heart almost stopped right there on the deck!!!!! Those of us here are witness to some masterful work and as for me I have coveted many of those bows...... well I do believe this is the first time one of those was delivered to my door!!!!
Bryce I truly don't know how you separated yourself from this one... not only gorgeous to look at but truly a great shooter. I took it out back and grabbed a couple dozen arrows of different spines and it ate them all!!!!! I don't think I've shot a selfbow this spine friendly!!! Smooth as silk, quiet and man shoots like it's tied to my eyes!!!
Thank you so much this one will never see another home :)

Thanks again Bryce.... truly a great bow :)

-
boy is that sweet! you lucked out there!
-
that's cool turtle, atlatl's are really fun to mess around with to, almost got a crow with one this year
-
I finally got mine shipped out today. I had a couple of bows in the works for my recipient, but learned that they were particular about their bows and only shot their own, so I made up a dozen traditional arrows.
I also received my gift from chertle. 3 very nice knapped points of obsidian, flint, and blue glass. And also a nice fleece blanket. Thank you Chertle. I will get some pictures posted once I get those points hafted.
That is a sweet atalatl! And coaster that bow Bryce made, well looks like it shoots well for you!!

that's cool turtle, atlatl's are really fun to mess around with to, almost got a crow with one this year
Now that's pretty cool.
Jon

Thanks again Bryce.... truly a great bow :)
I found an IDENTICAL stave yesterday. I mean it's a mirror image of the one I used to make your bow. Even down to the little wiggle in the top limb and I'm gonna make another one the same way.
