I cut a couple of these the other day and peeled the bark and was curious if anyone knows what they are? We have a lot of them in the woods around my house. They dont get very big but form pretty dense thickets. If I remember right they have little blue berries about the size of a pea on them in the wintertime. I plan on tryin them as bowwood but would like to know if anyone has a clue what thery're called. Sorry for the poor quality pics, all I had was my phone on me at the time.

Hard to tell. The second pic almost looks like yaupon holly leaves.
-
I'm not sure from the pics but it almost looks like a big privet.
-
I am thinking privet, they casll it hedge in Mississippi
-
I'd say privet or one on the honeysuckles. Does it have any flowers or fruit on it?
-
looks like privet hedge to me. It will make a bow according to TBB IV. There is a picture in it of two bows at full draw - one oak and the other privet. Real white colored wood. It is invasive as hell and is a pest around here.
-
Thanks for the input guys. I kinda thought it might be privet but I wasnt sure. I got a piece worked down and drying so I'll see how it works out.
Pat, I didnt see any flowers or fruit on it but Im pretty sure I remember seeing little blue berries on them in the past.
Hrhodes, I remember seeing that pic in the book. Have you ever tried it for bows?
-
Made some progress with this privet and thought I would post a pic. It ended up makin a pretty sweet little bow. It doesnt have a finish or handle on it yet but it is tillered out to 25", and thats as far as Im going with it. Its 55" long and 1" wide and pulls 30# at 25". Im gonna dress it up and give it to my daughter. I'll post more pics when it is finished.

Nice bend, Okie. I'm sure she'll love it!!
-
I have been on the look for some good sized privet...
-
Did anybody else smirk just a little bit at some of the comments? Or is my thinking just a little off tiller?
-
Heres some finished pics of the little privet bow. I used walnut stain(which it didnt take very well) and 4 coats of tung oil for the finish. Built up the handle with some leather and tb3 and then wrapped it in jute cord soaked in tb3. I tried to get a pic of her shootin it but they were all a little blurry. I didnt try to make this bow real pretty as it seemed to look too primitive for that.. Thanks for lookin.

I'm with you Okie on the fancy circles. Things have come a long way from when I bent them across my knee and looked at them in the mirror to check the tiller.
