Ash is excellent in tension and does not need a backing at all, UNLESS the back grain is violated. Why do you want to apply a backing? Is it a board or a split stave?

its a board bow, i just thought i would make it a bit more durable.  do you think an ash board bow could pull say 55lbs  w/o a backing???

Any of the backings will work for protection and all are easy to apply. I prefer rawhide but any will work just fine.
