Title: Carp/Sinew backed Osage Shorty (Now in the "How to" area per request)
Post by: Almostpighunter on May 02, 2012, 01:43:26 am
Just finished shooting her in and I have to admit that at first I was really worried about her. This little darling is an 52" t2t Osage Orange with some heavily reflexed tips, and backed with sinew and carp skins. Can't really call it a recurve as the string doesn't touch the belly of the bow at brace height and the arrow shelf is beyond 1/8" off center... so I suppose that makes it a hybrid bow? Well, what's in a name anyway?

I was worried because the arrows seemed to be very slow despite her 50# @ 29" . Turns out that I didn't have the bow at proper brace height and, once I fixed that oversight, the arrows are now zinging off the string at a beautiful pace with absolutely NO hand-shock at all and is practically silent. All in all I am very happy with the results. You may notice the extra string nock in the pics, which are actually intended as bow stringing nocks. I have always had difficulty stringing this type of bow and horse bows. Obviously, the safest way is, of course, to use a bow stringer; unfortunately, I have always felt that the stringers on the market do not fit properly over the tips of the bow. By making an extra set of nocks I can simply use a long bow string as a bow stringer and it works perfectly and with almost no effort. Hope you enjoy.

Stats:

-Osage orange backed with sinew and carp skins
-52" t2t
-49" n2n
-50#@29"
-Latigo leather riser wrap

I'd happily buy one of those =)
Great curves. You've really done that bow beautifully.
Excellent work, mate. Keep it up.

Man, you're getting a lot of draw length out of such a short bow!  I've always loved your work, and this is no exception :)  Thanks for sharing!

49" nock to nock and you draw 29" with her!  Looks like a hornbow to me, hope that osage belly isn't collapsing on you.  The skins are great on there too.

If I might ask, what is the width on your limbs?

Good Grief!

Wow! Are you sure that there are no chrysals or frets on the belly because it looks like it took a lot of set...

Very nice bow.

That is a lot of bending to distribute over such a small area - amazing.

I love the look of carp backing. Snakeskin is beautiful and all that but there is a certain ruggedness to carp backing that snakeskins just can't compete with in my opinion.

Great job.

Loved watching the build-along on youtube, great to see pictures of it up here.

How did you preserve the carp skins? Borax?

Wow guys, thanks so very much for all the wonderful comments! You guys are my heroes.

@Dauntless & @Ifrit617: Well you guys made me look again, but I am happy to report there is no sign of any compression fractures, Chrysals or frets in either limb  :) . I give all the credit to the Osage and it's wonderful natural resiliency as opposed to any obscure proficiency on my part. Osage...gotta love it.

@Ifrit617: Also, because of the heavy static reflex in the tips I wanted to let the limbs settle in with whatever "deflex" they wanted to take. I knew I was going to lose some power by doing this but, after multiple surgeries on my wrists, the low vibration and minimal/no hand shock is a really big deal to me. Aside from proper tillering, this method is one of the best ways I have found to achieve that goal, but that's just IMO.

Remember if it was intentional and it works then it's called "letting the bow settle in" and not "taking set"  ::) :o O:)

@Mullet: I'll be heading to the local archery shop this weekend to put her through a chronie, but I am going to hazard a guess of around 150fps +/-. Not my fastest, but may well be the most comfortable bow I ever made. It's an absolute pleasure to shoot and easily an all day shooter due to the pretty much absence of all hand shock. Also, like a lot of horse bows the draw weight is deceiving as it feels lighter than it actually is (kinda feels low 40's instead of 50#). I actually thought I had over reduced the limbs initially and was pretty upset.

Cool thanks for the reply... That osage really is some tough stuff... Awesome.

Jon

P.S. thanks for showing the bow actually pulled to 29" and not being one of those guys who says he builds a bow that pulls 28" then only pulls it to 22" in the FD pic..  >:D >:D

Nice work!  I always wondered if osage could take that much compression. Guess that question is now answered.  Good deal.

What a load of carp!  I bet it's a effing-glass bow he painted yellow.

No!  I'm not jealous, not a bit.  I'm just chewing up the walls and carpet here because I'm hungry.  GAAAH!

Hehehe, "Letting the bow settle in", I gotta remember that one.  Very clever!  But you also make a very valid point.  This design has incredible mechanical advantage in those siyahs.  My 37# horsebow has been called a 25#-er time and time again.  It also shoots a 425 grain arrow at about 150 fps!  Here's hoping you change your username with this bow!

@Gus: sorry bud, missed the question initially. The limbs are 1.5" wide in the working portions and about .5" in the static portions/reflex.

@ryddragyn: just air dried the skins same as snake skins except when I laid them out I left the skins scales side up as opposed to down (the way I do with the snake skins).

Hey guys. I had a couple people ask me if I had any pics of the build, which I don't, but I did video each "step" of the entire build for my Youtube channel. I posted a link to the second video in the series as the first is just a introduction of the bow I am going to build. I suppose there is also a teaser of a future bow in the first video, but I'll post that one on PA as soon as I finish it up. So if anyone would like to see the steps of the carp/sinew osage shorty then check out the "how to and build along" section and thank you to everyone for all the kind words and interest!

i watched the entire build. it was very interesting to watch
i was curious  as to what you used to seal the bow with.
i also noticed that you live in a very dry climate, so wood and sinew cure very quickly there.
i live in a very humid environment so sinew on a bow really has no benefits here.
just some observations. i like the bow and your presentation of it. rv

Nice one, I agree the Carp skins are gorgeous I love it!  By the way I took a bow making class in Friendship Indiana last week and the instructor said its imossible to make a bow pull 29" unless its 77" long! I knew I should have asked for a refund and ran righ then!
