Title: Archeology Day at Monmouth College
Post by: iowabow on April 30, 2012, 11:55:58 pm
Tomorrow I am going to be passing on all the stuff I have learned from most of you.  I am demonstrating flint knapping, bow making, heat treating (yes building a fire in the middle of the campus), target shooting, glue making and the list goes on and on.   I have been preparing all month and I think I am ready.
I will post a group of photos tomorrow.

OK when I walked on campus this was in the hall. This was an outside event and the radar showed a storm would pass before we were to start. Well it did not until the last 30 mins of the outdoor part of the event.  Due to the rain the fire pit site was under an inch of water so I substituted that demo for an atlatl demonstration.  Not many attended the outdoor event because of the rain.  The indoor event went great and was a lot of fun.  My photos are on my cannon and I will download them tomorrow.   I did take Tower, Will, Flakewalker, Jackcrafty, and Stringman to the event with me for the modern part of the presentation. I wanted to show the students that the craft is alive and growing.

Well here is where the fire pit for heat treat was going to be but was underwater.

It was a primitive event so rain or shine it was going to happen. So I started with hammer stones, then anters, and then copper. I planned to be more spread out but the weather would not let that happen.

We switched gears and started looking at other primitives skills. In this set of photos I am making pine pitxch glue for the inside demo.

After 4 or 5 demos the work area starts getting crowded.

The rain finally stopped giving up time to do an atlatl/bow demo before the indoor event started.

We moved indoors to the archeology lab and continued with the halving of a point with the glue we made outdoors. I showed them how to center a point by spinning the shaft. I processed sinew and chewed for effect (and it worked) wrapped the point. I demonstrated how to reduce a arrow stave with a nice sized blade of flint.

We talked about the geological record in the state. We covered Brain (wow that was a shock to them) and vegetable tanning, they want to knap so I passed out the tools that I made for the event and they all stated hitting stone.

Toward the end I did a pressure flaking demo. I was very happy with this demo because it demosrated very well what I have been working on lately.

That's really awesome John.. When I was in college I sure wish someone had put on a demonstration like that. Way to "enlighten" the young folk.

John, that is excellent! I am glad that the college let you do that, what with those pointy "weapons", and all!  Why what violence are you trying to teach?! :o  Glad to see the students interested, hopefully, you will have "addicted" a few of them. ;)  JW, be careful, Bevan is too eager for you to ring his door bell!  Probably has a pin in the middle of it, or hooked up to an outlet! :o ;D
