This is my first experience making a bow. It is 64" and 52#@27" made of osage. For the handle I used a single piece of leather with lacing down the center. Leather dye was used to color the back of the bow and tips were overlayed with hickory. This was a very fun and knowlegeable experience. I didnt do this by myself though. My girlfriends dad has been making bows for years and he guided me through the process.
Im a little bummed that all I have left is to shoot it now, so guess ill be starting another pretty soon!

To get the texture on the leather I wet it then wrapped it with rope and let dry overnight.

Thank you all for your posts. Very nice. You will definetly be seeing more in the future :)
-
Very nice!!!! Sure is addicting isn't it?
-
First bow?! Holy crap dude that thing is beautiful!! You need to find a serious way to thank your mentor. And as for being bumbed that building is done, forget that shooting is what bows are made for! Bild them when your not able to go shooting! ;) ;D
-
Awesome bow! Really great work. I like the handle. That textured grip is cool. Man, you are in for it now.... this stuff is more addictive than crack.
-
Sure is a beaut Lefty! Wish my first bow looked like that. Welcome to the addiction >:D
-
great looking bow well done on your first of many. :)

i disagree, the arrow rest is on the correct side for all us " special" bowyers >:D
awesome bow , Bub

-
Good job, lefty!! I agree with what Bub said. We need more of us that shoot on the "correct" side.
-
Very impressive. That's crazy for a 1st.
-
welcome to the addiction. That bow is nice. There are good things in store for the future. You probabley better marry the girl or you'll let that future father in law get away, lol Danny
-
Now go and clean up the future father-in-law's shop! Be sure to dust everything and put it back in the same exact place! That is quite a gift he gave you, investing that kind of time and effort in teaching. If that's the kind of guy he is, his daughter might be something pretty special too.
-
I have to thank you all for the nice comments also. I consider myself blessed to have been able to help Joey with his first bow. He took to a drawknife like a fish to water, his attention to detail is obvious, and he did all this while attending college and playing ball.
Not long ago I figured I could abuse him and have him help me with an osage haul...and here I was concerned about wood borrers, of course he is welcome to whatever he wants.(http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q556/longbow60/JOEYBOW/000_0002-1.jpg)
-
Instead of wood borers getting into your stash it looks like he will!! Better get a bigger can of bug spray!
-
That bow is stunning! Especially for a first bow. My hat is off to you and to your instructor.
-
impressive....

Man, that's a sweet looking bow. It's amazing what a "first-timer" can do with a good teacher. Hopefully he has done his job in "planting the seed" in your brain, and we'll be seeing more of these from you.
And your teacher has got to show us more of his work too! I was impressed with the first one he posted a while back, but he's got to have more cards up his sleeve ;)
-
Beautiful bow. That's your first? Wow

2nd that!
That is exceptional for a first. Hats off to you.
