Title: New life for a old knife
Post by: Stoker on April 03, 2012, 12:14:59 pm
My freind Pete gave me his old knife to get the rust off and sharpen the blade.. He's had it since he was a scout in the late 60's..Knife is a Kohller from West Germany..Leather handle was totaled..
Skinny D and myself decided to make a new handle and sheath..
Handle is chokecherry..I stamped a sturgeon on the sheath because he is a rabid sturgeon fisherman..I think he'll like when he comes down when season starts...
Thanks Leroy

(singing)  "Like a sturgeon...cuttin' for the very first time! Like a stur-ur-ur-urgeoooon!"

That's some mighty nice work.  I bet it looks better now than it did brand new outa the box!

Wow!  That looks great.

What is the best way to get rust off of a knife blade?

Thanks for the comments..
Osage outlaw..To take off the surface rust we used brake clean..But for the deep pitting we used a wire wheel (gentally) Surface scratches we used a mouse sander wet sanding from 400-1500 grit just to bring the shine up..The brass hilt and the aluminum butt polished with the mouse and very fine steel wool and auto-sol metal polish(lee valley tools). Danish oil natural for the handle..
Thanks Leroy

Pete is a real good guy and he knows I like to play around on stuff..He's the kind of guy that will pay you back by feeding you when you are fishing..Yes you can gain 6lbs in a day of fishing ;)
Thanks Leroy
