Title: Kind of nasty......but doable I guess...
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on March 27, 2012, 08:43:15 pm
I was thinking it could be fun to post some staves that you have in your possesion that are nasty as ever, but quite doable. You know the ones you wouldnt dare peel and seal while your significant other was around. Here is a stave my good buddy Marty gave me. Keep in mind a wise man wouldnt give away a stave of this calibur to just anybody on the streets. Needless to say it has super rings to boot...I am in his debt forever .......and it will be a bow one day when my wife goes away for a bit!

When I seen this thread title, I have to admit bow staves weren't the first thing that popped into my head. >:D :-X. But since we're talking staves,  I got a peach of a stave from Sadie a while back.  I think it was the first hedge post to ever hold wire up.  If you shoot your mouth off about liking a challenge to Sadie, you better be prepared to back it up! ;) ;D. Thanks Sadie!  I've already started on it.  I think it might just work.  Josh

lol! Pearl I wouldn't call that stave that nasty. I guess I have always had some pretty low standards though,  LOL. I got a mulberry that is like a sister stave to that one almost, it is special though. It came from a tree that had some kind of decease or something that caused it to have no sapwood at all, just heartwood. When I cut it I was like "nice".

Those are the type of staves I never seem to get around to finishing, I get them cleaned up, roughed out and then every once in a while I will pull one out and work the tiller or start straightening, then back in the box for a couple more years.

Wow, so are all these going to Pearlie or what!?!  ::) lol  Maybe we should have a nasty stave bow swap ???  Turn your nastiest, scariest beast of a stave into a shooter and send it to someone (then cross your fingers and make sure you have good insurance, attorney, etc ;D)

I see your crooked wood and raise you:

Some of these are already bows.  This doesn't include the ones I cut directly into firewood.

Okay, I found one.  This one was gifted to me.

Just listen to the stave. Follow her every direction.

Some primo staves there..... :o You could use some of mine as a straight edge against them!
I do enjoy a good character bow now and again but I haven't done one for a while, might just have to keep my eyes open for a snake!

I was waiting for George to jump in on this thread.  I know he enjoys a challenging stave  :)

Maybe some day I'll be able to make these into center shot bows

I'm holding on to this one until I'm sure I won't screw it up.  A certain bearded bowyer has the other half of this log  ;D

Here are the ones I'm bringing to the Classic to give away.

Hey OO, it wasn't so much that I loved it as it was all I could get my hands on it at first  I've gotten some better wood since then, but it seems I always give that stuff away to people that come to the shop and want to build a bow.  Now I don't care so much...crooked or straight, thick rings or thin, it all makes bows and it's all good. ;D

I've had mixed luck with the staves that twist around where a branch was.  Sometimes the wood's so brittle it'll split there and blow up.  Other times not.  They look cool, but if I can I put those spots in the handle and make the bow fully center shot.  I've got one almost done like that now.  You have to be sure to wear an armguard though.  And I agree Gus, this is a cool thread. :)

Here is a pair of osage billets I have hanging in the shed. Not even sure they will make a bow but definately out of my expierience level. Maybe someday I'll give them a try.

Yew want sick and twisted yew I'll give ya sick and twisted yew.
Found this thing broke off and hanging up (laying across a couple of limbs) in a high altitude yew in the Cascades. Already seasoned.
The challenge with this guy is to keep it from wanting to wist in my hand like a brace and bit. I've almost got it to that point. I think taking out a little of reflex on each limb might help more. What do you'all think?
This thing is really teaching me a lot.
