Title: My New Fishing Bow. Inuit style.
Post by: Bryce on March 19, 2012, 05:30:56 am
So I've had this stave for awhile its not the best but since spring is creeping up on me I thought I would make a new fishing bow.

I started by removing all the sapwood and chasing it down to the 1st ring under the sapwood.

After that I layed out the profile at the widest its around 1.25in and tappers to 1in its pretty much a board right now and these are not the final dimensions.
Roughly shapped the handle and cut the thickness to .75in

Thanks for the refurbished draw knife bevan

When I got bored and was waiting for some water to start boiling for another project I braided some sinew for the backing. I got about 20ft done. Still need about 60 more feet.

Alright I'm tired goodnight.

Looking good. I like to fish but I prefer a rod and reel  ;)

What kind of wood is it?

What kind of fish are you intended to shoot with this bow just curious....

greetings,

stefan

Looking like a pretty cool thread Bryce!

I'm a fisherman of conventional means these days.
But I cut my eye teeth running the rivers and tributaries of Southeast Texas Bowfishing!

Looking forward to your progress.

While i was salmon fishing I saw a fat carp swim by and I was kicking myself for not bringing a bow. A round here we like to murder carp bc they eat the salmon eggs during spawning. After skinning the carp ill take there bodies to the river and feed the otters. Good fun for the niece. ;D

And the wood is taxus brevifolia (spell check)

Nice! Do you have a specific inuit style in mind?

Good luck on the cable, it takes a while doesn't it?

i was thinking of doing and arctic bow, with southern cable backing but undecided on the backing bc the arctic backing looks great but takes a really long time to put on and tie up.

the cable takes a really long time. if i just take a weekend i could probably knock it out. but with school and work it will take me close to a week maybe a little longer.

i havent even started soaking my antler braces yet. though i might use baleen. we'll just see what the bow wants to do i guess.

I had a log of yew hanging out in my basement for a long time bc there where some inner ring that had been rotten or diseased from a viscous woodpecker attack. So I sent a chunk to Prairie Bowyer and he made me a spool for this bow. It came out absolutley amazing this guy is an artist.

Looking good. The ONLY fishing I do anymore is with a bow. In Nebraska, after the 1st of July, we can take gamefish as well as 'trash' fish.

Cool thread and fishing reel, Bryce!  Be sure to show us how you attach it.  Are you going to braid sinew for the fishing line?  Holy-quacamole, Man.  That's a lot of braiding!

The spool is great and he said he wasn't even done yet he was gonna fill in some crack with blue. So I'm sure prairies inbox is gonna blow up.
I didn't really plan on braiding sinew for the line. I was just gonna use the trusty braided mason line.

Slow going.  Need to let the glue dry and build up the layers of super glue.

I'm so stoked on this spool.

floor tillered the bow. and checked it with a long string and iam pleased with it. though the handle doesnt bend as much as i wanted due to a knot that passes through the handle....

Started soaking my antlers today. My baleen supplier fell through  :-\
And put the bow in a bucket of water for a couple days before steaming and bending.  Soaking before steaming helps keep splinters down and this bow is going to have such a Sharp bend I want it to be as noodles like as possible.

I'll shape the bow tomorrow and post the results

What does soaking the antler do?
Title: Re: My New Fishing Bow. Inuit style.

What does soaking the antler do?

I should I have went into more detail about that I guess.

I cut the antler in half and rasped out the porous center. So now I have 2 prieces of antler that are going to soak for about a week. (Usually when making whole antler bows the beams soak for about 2 weeks)  after soaking they become soft. Then they'll be steam heated but not too much to cook the collegen out, and bent into the same angle as the curve of the angled tips on the bow. Then left to harden back up. Later it will be fitted to the back of the curve with filing and rasping. I usually use baleen or caribou but I wanna give elk a try. Baleen is super easy to work and bend. But difficult to get a hold of.

Alright I had some time to work on the bow this weekend. I cut some antler gave it a rough shape and put it back in the water to soak for a few more days.

Finished steaming and bending the bows extreme recurves.
I let it steam for about 30mins, clamped it to the form then steamed it again while still in the form for another 5 mins.

It have 12 in. From bend to tip at 30 degree angles.

While all that stuff cools, and soaks. Time to braid some more sinew, keeping the pieces of sinew that are about to get married into the sequence in my mouth to moisten up and bond into the cable without slipping loose under tension.

ive never dont a curve like with with yew before. just with vine maple. theres alot of knots and pins, so this bow has about a 25% chance of surviving. but what the heck. nothing ventured!
the curves are going to be reinforced. just wish i had horn or baleen instead of antler. it will work its just not as easy to manipulate.

Those bends look broken! ... holy smokes!

Googling horn brings up some options.  I've been looking at some springbok.  Those ripples would look cool on a belly.

I wonder if there is a source for cow horn in bulk?

I assure you they are not broken lol. They didn't even splinter.

Gemsbock is pretty easy to come by. Just picked some up for my next protect. Hungarian Composite bow

Alright here's the shape of the bow

Got some horn boiled it in diluted hide glue and clamped it to the same form the bow was on.

Still braiding sinew............

Why did you boil in diluted hide glue instead of just water?

This is a great thread, Bryce.  Had you posted an example of the bow a while back?  Those are some wacky bends.

Why did you boil in diluted hide glue instead of just water?

Boiling in just water creates the problem of cooking out the protein making the horn brittle. Boiling in deluged hide glue (i read) lowers the rate of protein Exchange. Monguls used to soak there horn in milk or diluted hide glue before steam bending.

I think that was sempertiger.
