Hello all, was at a logging site today and scored this log, knocked over by the equipment. I think it is an ash. Thanks all.

I would tend to agree with you, but my last attempt to id a tree from bark pics cost me a bow. So please forgive me if I remain noncommittal. ;) Josh

ash would also be my guess, but put almost no weight on my opinion, there's a good chance its wrong
-
Ash would be my guess, however, there is absolutely no dark core wood--which doesn't mean anything. It might be a young tree or a different kind of ash from what I've cut.

Ash

Hrothgar, The tree was only about 5" at the base. Correct, no dark core, just a central pith about 1/8 diameter.

Did you get any pics of the branches or buds? It is real hard to ID trees from the bark.

I would look to see if there is any red streaking anywhere in the wood kinda looks boxelder ish
Could ne black or green ash that is a tough one
-
Does look like ash. If so, the buds would be opposite. Whatever the species it seems pretty straight and even. Nice log.

i would say that is ash...
