I picked up a nice ocean spray bow by John Strunk. I was at the Traditional Archers of Oregon banquet, and it was going for too low on the silent auction (too many glass heads there ;)), so I got it. It is inspiration and study for the pile of ocean spray staves I have drying.
It is really neat looking and a shooter. It is a little short of a draw for me, and a little heavy for my wife (seems a tad heavy for 45 at 27, but I havent put it on a scale), but it is quick and nice to look at it. I might make up some squirrel getting arrows for this bow (not belittling the bow, it could take a deer easy, but it would just be fun to have a go to squirrel set-up).

cool..thanks for posting the stick ;)....how bout a full draw of her?
-
Very nice! You saved the auction and got a very cool John Strunk bow to boot! Well done. 8)

That bow is wicked cool with the pith scraped out like that.... John sure is a master at this craft...
Thanks for sharing and please post a full draw!

John was just telling me about this bow two days ago and I have shot it before, it really flings an arrow! I wish I could have got in on this silent auction!!! You got a great deal on a Strunk Bow!Congrats!!

-
Nice find!
-
I like that one,,,, cool bow and right in my specs.... get tired of it let me know :)
SaaaaWeeeeeT !!
-
Cool bow for sure!
Just curious how much did you pay?
-
i like it when bowyers dont just want to get their bow shooting but they also pay attention to detail and make it look pretty
-
Mr. Strunk makes incredible bows, you're a lucky guy.
-
Yup, the man makes a beautiful bow. Thanks for looking guys.
I will get a full draw pic or two when I get a chance.
Josh, that is really cool you had this bow in hand. You didn't need in on that auction, you already have a beautiful ocean spray bow...one that you made! BTW, I love the look of those tips on your spray with the bark on, that was a nice touch.
I will let you know if i get tired of it coaster
tenbroook, I paid $245 for it. (I thought I had it for $150, but they extended the silent auction bidding period by an half hour at the end >:(), so not a screaming deal, but I felt it was a very good price to get a Strunk bow in the collection.
-
CMB I also thought it was 150 as did John but even for the little extra you paid its still well worth the bow having a bow made by John Strunk!, he was just glad to donate it as he always is to pass on his bows! Thanks for the complamints on my OS bow I need to get her finished up but I seem to put other things before it :-\ Thanks again for sharing!

You lucky dog. That's a beauty!
Cipriano

Yeah, that's real nice! I don't suppose you could post its dimensions--length, width, tips, thickness...?
-
Thanks Cipriano!
UsernameTaken, no prob. Dimensions are 58" ntn, 59 1/4" ttt, lower limb is shorter than upper limb by 2". Handle is 4" long, 1 3/16" deep and 1" wide. The limbs are pretty much 1" wide out of the handle and until straight 8" taper to tips.
Found an old arrow and wrapped some sinew at 27" from the nock to limit my draw, and flung a couple today. These arrows matched the bow really well and it was more enjoyable to shoot , not having to worry about drawing past 27". It is a fast little bow. After shooting it, I went right to my pile of spray and roughed out a small bow from a 5/8" diameter stave. The stuff is green and I am experimenting with kid bow staves to see how well it drys after it has been roughed out. Sealed the belly with shellac and strapped it down.

Thanks for posting this. I just finished reading 'Hunting the Osage Bow', what a great book. I found myself nodding in agreement the whole way through. If I could write a book about archery that is what i'd be aiming for. Excellent read and really nice to see a bow of his now too.
-
You lucky dog! Great looking bow, nice score
-
Beautiful bow,congrats . :)

Very clean.

Thanks Pappy Parnell and Keenan.
Mikekeswick, Hunting the Osage Bow is Dean Torges, this bow is by John Strunk. I am not sure I wrote something confusing in the post or if you just need to put down that book and get some sleep! ;D
I am reading Hunting the Osage Bow right now too. It is a great read in addition to being a great how-to. I was reading "passages" aloud to my wife in bed last night. She fell asleep, but I was grinning wide while reading "from the dark-side" and almost choked-up reading "tis the season". It is a great book. I would like to see one of Mr. Torges bows too.

What a Great Bow CMB!
A Bow fashioned by one of the Masters of the craft that we pursue.
That is almost as good as it gets.
Love the bow.
Been lusting after some Ocean Spray for a bit now.
And I'm betting the money went to a good cause to boot?
Thank You for sharing!
