Title: Texas knap-in?
Post by: Tower on February 07, 2012, 10:54:45 pm
I know there are not many knappers here. With that being said, has anyone heard about the Pedernales Knap-in in Fredricksburg TX this year.  As much stone as we have here TX needs more knap-ns. I tried to make Stillwell & Odessa but work had me tied up. I heard a rumore there was one in Bandara last year. Any help. & I would be grateful.  Tower

Bandera, hmm. I love that town and the creek is full of white limestone and chert. Not to mention the beautiful monster cypress trees and the cold Shiner bocks ::). Little remeniscing here. Only one i've ever been to was the horseshoe bend knappers guild in Weatherford. Not sure if that one still goes on or not.

I get updates from our knapping group from time to time.  Yes, there is a Fredricksburg knapp-in this year as well as many others.  I'll post what I know when I get an update. ;D

I wish someone in  or around Waco would do one, more central. Fredricksburg is a long drive.

It is about ten hours for me, but I always enjoy it. I have missed about the last three years or so. Bill was still alive last time I went. Mike Smyth

So are the Fredericksburg knappin and the Pedernales Knap-In at Fort Martin Scott the same event?
And is this knappin being held April 12th - 15th, 2012?
Looked on line but only found old stuff so far.

Fredericksburg is a great town.
Though I've not been out that way since 1987.

Thank You.

Man, that's a bit of a drive for sure.  Not sure the little lady will want to go that far for shopping.  Ricky, maybe we could car-pool?  That's assuming work hasn't gone crazy.

Niblett's Bluff in LA is the weekend after the Fredericksburg Knap-in (April). The LLano Knap-in will be October 12-14 but many of us show up a day early. I haven't picked dates for the Stillwell event yet, but it will most likely be October 25th-28th. Of course Stillwell's is only convenient for me, but I always appreciate everybody that makes the LONG drive!!!!

I haven't heard if they are going to do the Bandera thing again. There is a rumor that Ray may have the Horseshoe Bend Knap-in this year over in Weatherford, but I don't think anything is confirmed yet. I believe that is usually Memorial Weekend.

2012 Pedernales Knap-In

The 2012 Pedernales Knap-In will be held the weekend of April 12-15.  This is the weekend before the Nibblet's Bluff Knap-In in Louisiana.

The big news is that it will be held at a new location!!!

The old location, Ft. Martin Scott in Fredericksburg, is unavailable due to the field (our parking and camping area) being leased to the Former Texas Rangers Association for construction of a Texas Ranger Heritage Center.  We have had many good Knap-Ins at Ft. Martin Scott and it was a pretty darn good site, but it is time to move on.

The new Pedernales Knap-In site will be at the Blanco County Fairgrounds in Johnson City, Texas.  This is located on the north end of Johnson City, Texas, on the west side of U.S. Hwy 281, and on the south side of the Pedernales River.

You can preview the site by going to either Google Maps (satellite view) or Google Earth.  Navigate to Johnson City, Texas (west of Austin), then follow U.S. Hwy 281 north to the Pedernales River.  The rodeo arena is a good, easy to find landmark.  You will be able to see the grove of trees between the rodeo arena and the barns.

I think knappers will be pleased with the new site.  We have access to a small covered pavilion (for inclement weather knapping) and a large area between the pavilion and the rodeo arena with several nice shade trees.  The Blanco County Fairgrounds offer knappers plenty of parking, easy in-easy out access, several nearby convenience stores and restaurants, electricity for late-night knapping, water faucets, on-site trash dumpsters, and enclosed restrooms.  Knappers will be able to camp at their knapping area or in the parking area.  Better yet, since the Fairgrounds are adjacent to the Pedernales River, camping is available next to the River if one so desires.

What we don't have is motor home/camp trailer hookups.  However, there is a nice RV Campground about one mile south of the Fairgrounds on the east side of U.S. Hwy 281.  There are also a couple of motels in Johnson City for those who want more comfortable accommodations.

Given the high cost of travel these days, we are trying very hard to maintain a cost-effective and affordable Knap-In.  There will be no charge for camping.  However, all Knappers and/or Vendors will be required to pay a $10 Registration Fee for the event.  As usual, we will once again be asking knappers and vendors to donate items for our Saturday afternoon auction/fund raiser to help cover Knap-In expenses.

The Pedernales Knap-In will be open to the public at no charge.  Since we are located right on the west side of U.S. Hwy 281 with high visibility and plenty of parking, we hope to attract the public in good numbers.  We will also be submitting press releases to the local newspapers to advertise the event.

I hate to get this information out with only two months to go before the event, but once it became clear that we would be unable to use the Ft. Martin Scott site, it took some time to find and reserve a new location.  We hope everyone reading this will spread the word to their knapping friends so we can have a good turnout!

In closing, we hope to see many of you the second weekend of April, 2012 at the Blanco County Fairgrounds in Johnson City, Texas for the Pedernales Knap-In!!!

Let's Get Crackin'!!!
