Keep them pics a coming >:D looking like a good start ;)
-
i like those tips ;D
-
You can probably get what your shooting for out of that, thos tips would scare me :D Pretty sharp bend all in one place but I wish you luck! Are you using the tension side of the viney?
Josh
-
Yeah, I'd be a little scared of those recurves too. Of course I'm a little gun shy on vine maple right now. those curves looked a little too much like my last attempt! >:D

Good luck, I'm interested to see your progress. Out of curiosity, what area of Oregon are you in? I'm in Portland.
-
Yep using tension side.
I've made another one just like this turned out fine.
Weylin did you soak the wood before steam bending?
I live 57 miles west of Portland down hwy 30 Clatskanie,Or. Population:1600 :D
-
I just had a thin spot. the break wasn't due to the bending (used dry heat) it was due to poor tapering. I got some help from Gordon to resuscitate but in the end it just failed in that spot. Live and learn. Make sure you come out to the Sisters gathering in May. :)
-
Nice Bryce I am interested in your design! I used to live in Goble now in Tillamook Welcome and please keep us posted on the bow, we are glad to have you!
Josh
-
i think that much bend in 1 area would scare me too!
-
If anything can handle it it's Vine Maple!
-
Goble that's hilarious I used to live Waaaay back in Goble shiloh basin area. What road?
Vine maple is unbelievably durable and super springy. I almost prefer it to yew.
-
I almost prefer it to yew.
either take that back or give me all your yew >:( ;) ::) >:D
-
Tide creek rd across from tide creek nursery, I grew up there all my youger life. My good friends the brownlows still live out there and my buddy Scott has a Vine Maple 7 pounder I made him. I love it as well but it doesnt work with a knife or file as cleanly or easily. Do you have any Yew out that way? I have had my buddy Scott looking for it for me but he hasnt seen any.
Josh
-
Fishy you could make a sweet war bow out of Vine maple!
Josh
-
i should try that someday if i ever get my hands on some
-
You pay shipping I'll send you a nice stave , but be warned it don't grow pipe straight!.
-
how much do you think shipping on something like that would be?
-
Not sure, I could always check and let you know before you decide, I'll take pictures of some staves and e mail them to you. I'll pm you
-
sounds good, thanks ;D
by the way, what are the characteristics of vine maple?
-
Do a searchI ;D'm going o tbed
-
ok, and i should get to writing my essay ::)
-
fish, i have a few 6' logs of yew :P all mine lol. we have soo much vine maple and even then finding a straight piece is difficult. but im sure i have a few hanging out back waiting to be made into bows. characteristics of vine maple....hmm... its more unbreakable than Oregon white oak, takes FOREVER to season and prone to warp. best way to deal with it is to get it green pull the bark off rough out the bow in less than a day. and then seal the ends, CLAMP THAT THING DOWN. and do not, DO NOT unclamp until dried to around 12% which takes awhile.
elk, ive only seen one Yew around here and it was by a lake behind saddle mountain. pretty sure they where all cut down and replaced with doug fir around here. ive seen more in Forest Park, which is lame bc your cant cut a stave from em.
alright guys i have Chemistry homework to finish so ill talk to yah later
p.s. if anyone needs vine maple, cherry, ash, or apple let me know i have a ton of everything but apple only a little of that
-
I wonder if that sharp bend will make it a difficult bow to string, guess it depends on what method you use to string it
-
Bryce21 do you have any pictures of the bow you made similar to this one?
Josh

super difficult
-
I opted for a cherry wood grip instead something a little more natural to this area

I'll get her all shaped tillered up?..... Down? w/e get some stain on her and post the final pics here in the few days :D
-
Not that vine maple needs it. But I wanna put a backing on it. Ive, or course heard of linen fabric as a backing. What about rip-stop nylon? What do you guys think?
I was thinking bc nylon has some stretch to it and this bow is super bendy.
-
You live in Klatskanie? Ever been to the restaurant there called Humps?
-

Yeah i think I ate there like once.
-
Go with linen if ya really wanna back it.
Nylon is relatively heavy and doesn't stop ripping like you might expect...
-
Alright dude!
-
Bryce, I would back it with silk, rawhide, or sinew.

I was looking for silk all day today couldn't find anything that was 100% silk...... And is tightbond II good for silk?
-
Try the good will or a second hand store I get my silk there, usually shirts or ties and yes tb2 will work. Why do you want to back it? How is the progress? got that beast strung? pics pics pics ;D

I'm no expert on vine maple but I can say this thats to sharp of a been for nay white wood I know. OSAGE WOULD BE A BIG MAYBE. Hope you make it bet and give you odds it won't make it. Like I said hope it dose BUT your asking alot.
-
I once made a bow with a sharper bend than that...
It blew at the fade! I had left the bark on and as the back cracked it to some wood with it.
I'm not sure if it woulda made it to 27"...
De-barking is by far my most hated part of bow building.!

In my 7 years of bow making I've never even touched or seen a piece of Osage......I hear its good lol
You want some vine maple? I got a ton!
I
I will admit iam pushing the limits of this wood. But hey, that's what its all about, breaking the rules.and sometimes your bow! HAHAHA.

Got her tillered to 24" last night then went to bed lol. And now on the lower limb I'm getting a little twist, a bit sketchy.
2" to go!
-
Didn't get a chance to work on her today. Went to the sportsmans show instead. But here's a better look at the bendy bit, for you guys.

Beautiful. Way to push the limits. I was going to say it looked like a hockey stick until I saw those last couple pics, it is much prettier than a hockey stick. Hope it survives. My VM recurve blew, but I think it was the particular piece of wood, and my dry heat recurve bending regime.

Thank you sir. I think when I get her to the last couple inches she'll blow up lol but yah never know lol
"my dry heat recurve bending regime." That cracked me up for some reason lol
-
couldnt find any silk it was all polyester or rylon but i found some pretty good looking linen. so i just used that.

In my 21 years of bow builtding. I've cut dozzens and dozzens of OSAGE TREES. And had 100's of osage staves. Don't need any vine maple but would trade some OSAGE for some yew staves. No limbs but staves. Big enough for simi-recurve handle. No use for bendy handle wood.
-
Don't need any vine maple
yah sure? its fun stuff
-
All I've made a few vine maple bows. Have one all ready simi cut out to start now later this spring. I got the stave from elk tracker.
-
linen backing is my new favorite (never done it before....its nice)
-
There's a little bit of twist in the lower limb but she shoots just fine.
Here's a pics for all the doubters ;D
Had to lower the weight to #55@26"
Just before I start putting finish on.

That looks very cool. I can see why you were concerned about the twist, your string might just fly off if things werent lined up perfect. How skinny are you going to go with the tips?

String stays on pretty good. I'm gonna take her down to about 1/2" or so.
-
Put string bridges on it, to remove any chance of it reversing. I don't think there ever was very much yew in the Clatsop, Tillamook, or Columbia county area. Really fine looking bow by the way
-
That came out very nice. Congratulations

theres quite a bit in vernonia. ive seen 1 other in clatsop county most are at the higher elevations where logging doesnt happen. ive planted some around the families properties and stuff. but ive never cut down a yew. i have pulled staves from the side of trunks.
do you live close?
-
Bryce that turned out great! Well done looks sweet! Next time I get out that way I will have to let you know aheaad of time so we can hook up and chat maybe do some stump shooting or go harvest some VM.
