Title: First mulberry....scraped and more pics..
Post by: lowell on January 21, 2012, 12:48:39 am
and first bow for 2012.  Never tried mulberry before and I kind of liked it but osage is still best for me!!

  It's 58" ntn, and 50# @ 27".

Looking at the pictures and think the top 1/3 of the top limb should be bending a little more  but I still like shooting it and it is a little higher poundage than I have shot in the past.

Your thoughts on the tiller or anything else is always appreciated!!

I left 1 ring of sap wood and expect the heart wood to darken and the sap wood to stay white....is that a reasonable expectation??

      Thanks for looking, Lowell

The outer 1/3 of the upper limb is a bit stiff but other than that this looks like a sweet bow. Mulberry is a good bow wood. Not osage but good none the less.  ;)

Mulberry can make a better sinew backed bow sometimes compared to osage though. But that is probably just due to it's lighter weight. I don't know that it would really be "better" really either, it might shoot better, but it will get chrysals where osage would not. It is a beautiful wood, and makes a beautiful bow, as your bow is an obvious example of a beautiful mulberry bow!

Lowell with your upper being so much stiffer than the lower, how does it shoot and feel when you draw it?

Pearl drums,  It shoots about 5# more than what I am used to shooting so of course it seems stiffer but I was really liking to shoot it.  It may have a little more handshock than my others.

This one kind of kept me awake last night after I saw the full draw picture....really didn't like the look. I think I will scrape a little more on that and try to stop "when the hair cut is done". ::)

I'll let you know how it ends up and if I stop before I mess it up!!

Piece of Cake Lowell. Just scrape the center 10" maybe 15-20 times and that should do it. I bet your hand shock is coming from that upper limb being the stiff one and a touch high brace. Your close, I like it. Your getting a pretty good bend with a shorter bow.

Worked on it this morning and I'm going to quit at where I'm at.  Lost about 4# and really want to keep it at a hunting wieght bow.

When making it I was thinking about a trade for a nice knife but may keep it  and see how it darkens and may be a nice bow for turkeys or even deer .  Plan on more deer hunting from ground next fall and this one might be nice.

Thanks for looking and feel free to make ANY comment!! ;)

I really believe taking pictures is a big help to see how it is really bending....and would encourage it.

   Thanks for your comments!!

I agree looks much much better now... Probably added thousands of shots to the bows lifespan... Awesome job.

Nice to see the improvement.
Like you say, sometimes just takin' the pics is enough to help you see.
Sweet bow

Nice adjustment. Tiller looks well balanced now. Better to be a little lighter and durable long term than heavier and short lived.  I'm going to harvest some Mulberry and Black Locust tomorrow. Been a while since I worked any mulberry. Its nice bow wood.   Danny
