I'm planning another osage wood cutting outing in the next month or so while the sap is down as much as it will be here in Texas. Cipriano and Gus cut with me last time and we'll go back to that same place which is near McKinney. In addition to reasonably straight osage, there's ash juniper, hackberry, pecan and cedar elm on the property. Right now I'm thinking of doing it on either the 1st, 3rd or 4th Saturday in February (I tentatively have a hog hunt planned for the 2nd Saturday). As always, we'll start with breakfast at my place, biscuits and sausage gravy, then head north and cut wood until we're wiped (which doesn't take long for me). I have my trailer home to bring a load back to my place (though I still don't have a truck to tow it with...but hope to by then). Gus, I have my chain saw running better now. Here is the thread from the last cutting: http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,26710.0.html (http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,26710.0.html) we only had enough energy to cut the first clump. Let me know if you're interested.

i wish i could come..sounds like a blast...john

It would be worth the trip from South Dakota just for the biscuits and gravy...or just for the company....but when you throw in cutting bow wood it is just over-the-top. Wish I could be there, guys!
-
For you I'd throw in hog hunting JW... We are gonna get you down here some day. >:D
George

I wanna shoot a Tejano hog and make posole from his shoulders, Chipotle rubbed Canadien bacon from his backstraps, and chorizo from the scraps!!! I won't even speak of what will happen to the ribs. >:D
-
Sounds good to me. That rub was wonderful by the way, tried it on some chicken tonight. Thanks again.
George

Glad ya liked it!
-
Yes Sir George!
Would Love to come up and Eat Biscuts and Gravy with you and your Missus... :)
And cut wood too. ::)
That was a Wonderful Trip, and beautiful place that your friend has with Beautifully Straight Trees!
I'll be ready to go when you give the word.
Be happy to pull the trailer if your replacement Pony is not in place by then.

I'd love to come with you guys! ?Unfortunately?(doesn't really fit here), I will have a 1-4 week old baby depending on when she feels like making her appearance.
(And i think if I went I just might find my pillow out back with the puppies when I got home...)
Keep us posted and be sure and put up pics?

wow- checked out that old thread - them suckers are straighter than my tulip poplars! :o
-
Sounds good Gus. No truck yet so I may take you up on that. I talked to Thomas yesterday and he's very anxious to get that osage clump back by his ballfield cut down and hauled out. Don't remember if you went back there and looked at it when you were there.
I understand Jeremiah. I'll bring home a couple logs and once you get a pass you can come and split them at my place.
Yes, these are unusually straight trees. Thomas' yard was a very thick woods when he bought it. It caused the trees to all be very straight, no matter the species.
I'm thinking the first weekend in Feb if that works for everybody and the weather cooperates.
George
-
for oasge trees like that i would consider driving down to hep out
-
No Sir George, I never made it much past the front of the house... ::)
The first weekend in February sounds good to me.
I'll make sure my gear is in good shape and ready to roll.
Looking forward to it.
Regards,
-gus

Come on down fish, it's worth it just for the biscuits and gravy. The osage is just icing.
OK Gus, lets settle on Feb4 as our plan day. If the weather's cruddy we'll use Feb18 as our rain date. That OK with you Cipriano?
George

Yes Sir,
Have it marked on the Calendar and looking forward to it... :)
The Biscuits and Gravy are not to be missed!

I'm bumping this to the top to see if y'all are still coming and if anybody else is interested. Planning to drop some osage next Saturday north of Dallas. Anybody else interested in joining the fun and taking home some yeller wood?
George
-
Diego and I will be there for sure...
George, I think I'm going to have to lock and move this topic so we don't curropt any more folk Jan necessary... ;D
Cipriano

George

Yes Sir George!
I'll be there, looking forward to it. :)

I'm giving this another last bump to see if any other Texas area bowyers want to join in the osage cutting fest. I'll probably make a post over on the bows forum pointing here to try and make sure everybody sees it. We're supposed to get some rain tonight and tomorrow (and I hope we do, we need it) but Saturday is supposed to be dry and cloudy with a high of 62. Should be perfect wood cutting weather. PM me if you need directions to my place. Saturday morning we'll eat breakfast (Mary's biscuits and gravy) at 8:00, load up the pickups, and head to the woods around 9. Gus is going to stay after we're done working wood and either make some shavings or break some flint with me. Anybody else near us is welcome to join in the fun.

I wish I lived closer. I'd like to come and just hang out and talk bows while we worked.
If I ever make it back down to Nocona, I'll be sure to look you up George.

:-\
-
But I'll take some biscuits and gravy! ;D
-
The way things are going at work today, I am about to come down and call in sick tomorrow and monday :P
-
Whew Who!
Yes Sir, can't wait.
Ran the saw yesterday, just to make sure she was ready...
Cutting a decent haul of Crepe Myrtle staves was the bonus!
But there's just some intangible quality that makes cutting and splitting Osage distinctive and attractive... :o
:)
-gus
-
As always, you crack me up Patrick. Bevan, if you're gonna be sick 2 days...make it 3 and we'll get in a hog hunt. >:D
Gus, as I recall that saw was the key to our last cutting. ;D Mine is running well now, but I really need to find the new chain I bought for it. ::)

We cut down just 1 clump of osage trees today that had 3 nice trunks. It wasn't quite as straight as last year's, but it was on the edge of the ball field and Thomas wanted it removed badly. Most of the pictures are still on the SD card from the camera, but I did snap one with the phone of the wood I brought home in the trailer after I sealed the ends. It doesn't include 3 nice sized logs and some smaller ones that Gus has in the back of his truck.

It was a good day of cutting. Both saws ran well, and nothing got crushed by falling osage trees. Gus and Leon were good help and Leon's son Ethan brought his bow and did some shooting. Good times.
George
-
How many bows do you think you have there?
-
Hard to say, maybe 25 or 30 if the splits go well. This tree had more branches so there'll be some wood that doesn't work. Wish you could have made it. There were 3 more trees right there we could have taken down but we were loaded about to the limit with the 1.
George
-
I guessed 30. I thought about calling when I got off but that was 2 and I knew it was too late. Better luck next time.
-
Yes Sir!
Thank You for your Hospitality George!
Breakfast was Great and the Company Better! :)
Here are a couple more photos including the logs I brough home...
Thank The Maker, we had a perfect Wood Cutting Weather window!

Nice haul!! Wish i coulda been there!
-
Call me crazy but the biquits n gravy look better to me right now ::).....nice cutting...wish I had a tractor to pick up n drop whole log in the back of a truck.
-
The eats were good for sure, and being able to use Thomas' tractor is VERY nice. Here are more pictures.
This is the clump we took out, Thomas really wanted it gone. It was in the way of his ball field.

Gus dropped the trees and Leon moved most of the wood over to the truck and trailer as Gus and I did the cross cutting. Here's Gus cutting down in between the tree trunks while Leon watches.

Leon brought his 4yr old son Ethan who stood guard in case osage thieves were in the area. He also saved us from the rare poisonous lady bug beetle...

Fortunately, the cameras did not catch me doing the 10 yard dash with running chain saw when I cut a bow stave length of trunk out of the piece stuck in the tree. Leon got a good laugh though. We did have one very anxious moment when the tree fell toward the trucks on the last cut. Fortunately, a friendly hackberry tree held them up until we could hook the chain and tow strap up and pull them out into the open. Here are more random pictures.

Here are more pictures. Every now and then I get lost and confused in the middle of a tree-top.

Gus is explaining growth rings and how they relate to the bowyer.

Leon is strong as a bull, moving heavy osage logs with ease. My back thanks you.

Thanks Gus and Leon, it was a fun outing.

I have yet to see any yellow wood growing around here. Wish I could get in on that fun! :)
-
I wish I could have come. Be sure and let me know, next time. It's about a 6 hour drive for me, but would be worth it to meet you guys and learn.
