Title: Massive Pignut Hickory Haul
Post by: straightarrow on December 17, 2011, 10:03:32 pm
Hey guys i wanted share some picture of todays adventure. I am having some timber cut on my property and took advantage of guys being there with some heavy equipement. Friday they hauled out this large pignut hickory. We have been planning this for awhile and today was finally the day. We met this morning at 8 a.m and were in full swing by nine. The guys....(I should say men) involved was Hickory Bill, Blackhawk, My nephew, Cwbuchanan, and Myself. It was some back breaking work but let me tell ya....WE HAD A BLAST...Within a couple hours we did some serious damage...and by lunch we pretty much had it all split. Everything was all sealed up by three. Not to bad....Huh? We did alot of messing around in wasn't all work...lol

We ended up with 97 staves...We set aside 6  for backing strips and had about a dozen belly splits.

I think we're good on hickory now...Lol

Nice haul guys... Only true bowyers would be crazy enough to split that monster of a tree... Ya know, 97 staves sure is alot... And it is christmas, a time for giving... All adding up to the fact that you guys should share the love.... :) :) :) hahaha.... I envy you.

Some serious timber there.
You guys do things in a big way over there.
The UK is so small there's no room for trees that tall ;)
Nice work, can't beat a day out in the fresh air.

I cut a big hickory tree a couple months ago, sure wish I had cut it in the spring. It took me a week to get the bark off 20 staves. You have your work cut out for you cutting a tree at this time of year.

Nice haul,I'm with Eric on cut in the spring thing. :) Nothing much harder than Hickory bark.  Good thing you had some help,we do that every year or so and the more help the better. :) :)

If those were cut up into boards you would have many 1000's of $ worth of wood there at English hickory prices....you are lucky guys to have trees like that growing near you.

Mike, lots of times land is logged near where I live and all the hickorys are left standing, no market for them.

Ya I was going to say here Hickory is kind of Junk wood,Not for me,Makes great bow and the squirrels love them but as for timber you have to beg a logger to cut it. Tie logs and pallet wood is about all it's used for. :) :)

Hickory is about £50 / 75 $ per 7 foot 6x1 3/4 boards....and finding a straight grained /non warped piece ain't too easy.

The logger said I would have got about 150 to 200 bucks for the tree. I would have liked to cut it the spring but I had to take advantage of the heavy equipment..... where the tree was at we would have never gotten it out..it was a now or never situation.

I wish I had access to some heavy equipment this summer.  Hauling out bow wood is some hard labor.

It ain't so hard if you only haul one bow at a time ,you folks keep trying to get by the hundreds !
LOL I think its great ,oh to be young again! Just wish you youngens would let us oldtimers know so we could come watch all the fun!

That's a nice haul.  I took one 6"diameter x 7' trunk out of the woods on my shoulder last spring and it just about killed me.  Got 4 nice staves out of it, but never got back out to get the other half of the tree in time, which was kind of disappointing.  97 staves in one haul....wow!

You make fewer trips if you haul out a bunch at a time ;)

I understand straightarrow, sounds like you had a good plan.Wished I could find a logger around here that would give 150.00 for Hickory like that,I could retire,My place is full of it. :) I had the timber management folks from tn. come and tell me what I need to do to manage the time on my place and they told me to cut   all the Hickory and beach down and if I couldn't 't find someone to buy it let it rot to make room for the good trees. :o ??? Oak mainly,  One good thing is I will never run out of bow wood/fire wood . :)

I hear ya !
My boss bought one of those hills in Ten. we used hickory off of it for like ten years in the cab shop then he sold the land for more than he gave!
Wish he would buy another one I would love to come down and see whats there !
