Title: First timer ash bow, not so bad....
Post by: PEARL DRUMS on December 11, 2011, 11:09:43 am
This is my best buddy Dave. He hunted Inidiana with me this year and helped cut and haul all the hedge I procured down there! I finally talked hm into trying his own bow from some white ash we harvested from his place last summer. Its 64" ntn, 1 3/4" wide, 1/2" tips, 48# @ 27". Not bad for a ROOKIE! He wanted it simple, so we left it that way. No glue, no overlays or handle sections. All from one stave and stained chestnut. Thanks for peeking. If you see anything wrong.................let him have it good! Its the only way to learn!

Good job, Dave!  So, what do you have in mind for your next bow?  Of course, we all know that you've been bitten now, by the bug.

Congratulations!

Rookie luck! I lost my first two ash bows, that stuff fell off my bow woods list!

I have a buddy Dave who makes bows too! Coincidence? Yes, yes it is.  ;D

Nice bow. I love working with ash and would like to make another bow out of it. Hard to get my hands on it though.

Nice bow Dave, and good apprenticing PD. Dave, ignore Pat, keep the tough "game face".

Congratulations!

He's out on the bandsaw now cutting out his next osage flatbow! I made him start with challenging wood so he would truly appreciate hedge! Thanks for the words all!

Beautiful bow. How long did it take?

From stave to bow, maybe 5-6 hours? Not long really. We did no heat corrections and left it el' natural in shape.

Ol' David was a hard sell. I made him an osage recurve last winter and we went to two camp out/shoots last summer. Guess what finally sold him?????? THE PEOPLE he met and talked to acted like they knew him forever, he was blown away and said that this was the thing for him to do. Now we are looking at halfy's on a nice, large tent for our shoots in the summer. I did very little on this bow but help him identify flat spots and mark them.
